Dense and frothy head past one finger, tan to eggshell white, decent amount of lacing, not long streaks but in many places. Deep bronze color that verges on brown, more yellow at the edges, active and widely dispersed bubbles, soft haze to it too. While there’s a bit of quinine, salt and pepper to the nose it’s quite malty with caramel, molasses, challah bread, spring blossoms and then a drop of lemon, the fruit scents mainly apricot to peach, does a very good job of pulling it back in before it gets monochrome and tedious. Medium-bodied, has heft but this does not get in the way of freshness as the carbonation provides prickle and that quinine, mineral water aspect cleanses. Bready if not doughy, manages to come off at once as both uncooked and toasty. More honey, molasses to caramel if resolved by the finish. Less peppery here, more like rye spiciness. Apricot, fig to golden raisin fruit. Could speed up the pacing some but that’s a minor quibble. The kind of beer that invites you in to enjoy it rather than contemplate it. Good marks for drinkability.

Double Nickel Brewing Co. "Vienna Lager"
12 fl. oz. can, "CANNED ON 7/7/16" and sampled on 9/6/16
$1.99 @ Total Wine & More, Cherry Hill, NJ

Double Nickel's Vienna Lager pours a slightly hazy (it's unfiltered) deep amber body with golden highlights beneath a creamy head of off-white. The head retention is quite good but the lacing leaves a little bit to be desired.

In the nose you'll find a fresh grainy maltiness with a hint of medium caramel and a light toastiness. There are some floral hops, and a bit of light fruit as well.

In the mouth it's medium bodied and gently crisp and then smooth with a fine-bubbled, seemingly natural carbonation.

The flavor delivers exactly what the nose suggests with a little bit of additional hop spiciness. It's remarkably well balanced, and not overdone like so many examples from other American breweries, leaving it malty but not "sweet" or "full", and dry in the finish with short lingering notes of caramel, dark skinned fruit, and a gentle spiciness.

It's right on target for the style, and pretty impressive overall. I could easily see enjoying it year-round.

Poured from a 12 oz. can. Has a copper color with a 1/2 inch head. Smell is of toasted malts, some very light hops are present. Taste is crisp, mild, toasted malts, crackers, light hops, easy drinking. Feels medium bodied in the mouth and overall is a decent beer.

The beer pours out into a Duvel glass a clear deep amber-copper color with a ½” creamy ivory head that soon recedes to a thin cap of foam leaving no lacing on the sides of the glass. Sipping creates widely scattered small patches, speckles, and arches of leggy lacing. By mid-way through the beer the liquid has very little foam remaining.

The aromas include some nice bready malt with a touch of toasted character in the background. Also in the background and barely noticable there are some earthy hops.

The flavors are much as expected from the nose with the lightly bready malt and a light touch of bitterness until the finish when the bitterness of the hops emerges a bit more before fading too. The hops have a nice grassy, earthy character. The beer also doesn't have too much sweetness as is the case with some Vienna Lagers.

The mouthfeel is on the light side of medium bodied and smooth with light but persistent carbonation. The medium length finish begins as the bready malt flavors and some now noticeable earthy, grassy hop bitterness become more prominent. Eventually all disappears into a gently dry ending that invites another sip.

This is a quite drinkable beer. I could easily have another and I’ll be looking to find more. It seems a reasonably well made example of the style and is semi-local in that the Brewery is in Jersey and just on the other side of the river from Philly.

12 oz can poured into a pub-style pint glass.

Amber. Good clarity. Light carbonation.

Brown bread, caramel, brown sugar, and earthy, leafy hop aromas.

Brown bread, biscuit, caramel, and brown sugar. Balanced earthy and leafy hoppiness. Suggestions of raisin and plum.

Medium bodied, crisp, oily, and semi-dry with a medium bitterness.

Perhaps a tad too much bitterness for the style but overall a very well done Vienna.

Not bad, mellow yet hearty lager with better taste than most. Will lead me back to try other offerings from this brewery.

Very good Vienna. Poured into a pint glass looking a hazy amber. A little bitey on the front end but finishes well. As someone already said it reminds of Eliot Ness. Good feel and flavor. Give it a try.

(12 oz can, canned on 3/3/17... poured in stages into an I&G fluted goblet)

L: medium-shade amber liquid, with brownish highlights and a mild haze... tall, two-finger, open-spongy foam - builds high, with slow, crackling decay, eventually leaving just a fish-eye bracelet...

S: sort of American brew pub, lightly-sweetish, light-medium toast, bready maltiness... perhaps a faint whiff of perfumy, flowery hops with a tiny hint of lemon... the sweetish notes are more forward than any toasty or grainy qualities... nothing notable or unique to make it stand out

T: definitely a certain something stands out upon first sip - I hate to use this comparison, but it immediately reminded me of an Arby's roast beef sandwich - not sure if I'm tasting the meat or the bun... bit of yeast brown in the aftertaste... second sip has much less Arby's, as some caramel and whole wheat bread crust flavors emerge, real subtle lemon and leafy notes in the aftertaste, very lightly bitter...

F: light-medium bodied with a delicate bubbly tingle... fairly dry on the back end, maybe a weak residual viscosity... perhaps a touch "weighed down", lumbering

O: haven't been to this place, but I would like to give this a shot on tap, more fresh, to see if my opinion sways (not sure it will) - still, intrigued by their unfiltered/unpasteurized approach... this is okay, but even Yuengling has more of a unique character
