Style: American Porter

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 6.50%

Notes / Commercial Description:
The dark, robust body and pronounced smoky flavor of this limited edition beer make it an adventuresome taste experience. Alaskan Smoked Porter is produced in limited "vintages" each year on November 1 and unlike most beers, may be aged in the bottle much like fine wine.

*Bottle dated 10/05/15

Pours a dark, muddy brown color with a solid inch of fine, khaki foam. Aroma pounds you with rauchbier-caliber smoke--we're talking straight campfire--and some gentler notes of peat and caramel.

The taste is more balanced than the nose, with plenty of roasted malt and earthy hops getting in on the act before the smoke asserts itself toward the middle and back. With the smoke comes an almost salty character that rings out into the finish. Warming reveals hints of prunes. Medium-heavy body and ample carbonation make for a robust mouthfeel that trumps that of your average porter.

While not especially complex, this smoked porter executes on all fronts without pushing things too far. A winning example of the style.

2016 vintage; drank 9/14/17 @ the Yarchives.

Black/brown appearance.

A rough pour yielded a big, noisy tan head; decent lace.

Smoked ham & mild milk chocolate notes in the nose.

Medium thick, creamy mouthfeel.

This was harshly metallic up front; once warm, smoked ham & wheat flavors up front; faint milk chocolate notes on the finish.

The base beer really didn't stand up to the smoke; a pass for me moving forward.

Pours a deep brown/black with a thin off-white head that doesn't last any significant amount of time. The smell is smoky with roasts and oak. There is a little tobacco present as well. The taste was what the nose predicted. Peaty smoke up front, followed by roasts, some wood and the aforementioned tobacco. There were also hints of dark bitter chocolate as well. The feel was smooth with a medium body and a fairly strong carbonation.

Well, if you like smoked beers, this one may be among the better. I paired this with some lovely chocolate cupcakes with a vanilla frosting and that was a great match.

650ml bomber poured into TeKu glass.

This review is of the 2012 vintage so 5 years old.

Pours almost black. Very pale head which receded very rapidly.

My initial impression on sampling this was one of disappointment. I had anticipated something a bit more "massive". It was toward the end of my first glass that I realised that subtlety is this beers greatest strength. I think I started off much too cold. As this warmed a little I was rewarded with the most amazing chocolate nose that I've ever had in a beer. There is also a little dark fruit and a touch of spice. The smoke is sweet and very much takes a back seat. I didn't get the smoked meats/bacon that some reviewers commented on but that is not a cause for complaint. The flavour follows the nose with some pleasant ash on the finish. The carbonation is a touch too high in my opinion but this is still a great brew. I don't remember ever "contemplating" a beer so much and probably spent more time with my nose stuck in the glass than drinking from it. A really rewarding experience. Not sure it makes me want to move to Alaska but so pleased to have tried this. Guess it's pretty amazing that I can even get hold of this in Scotland. Cheers!!

Pours pitch black and leaves the same colored body; with a two finger off-white foamy head that yields some sporadic lacing; the smell is smoky, roasty, with a little bit of tobacco and oak; the taste is basically the same with a bit of coffee coming through and a bit of that meatiness usually found in rauchbiers, roasty aftertaste, dry finish; its sits fairly well on the palate (wants to try to be somewhat heavy but actually isn’t); overall, an exceptionally well done smoked porter.

Pours dark brown. Foamy, short, off white head fades fast.

Smells smokey, char, roasted malt, light chocolate and hints dark fruit.

Tastes Caramel and roasted malt, light char and smoke and a touch of dark fruit. Finish is dry with a light chocolate and smoke linger. Medium body and fizzy medium carbonation.

Rocky, creamy head stop black body. Good retention. Aroma of smoke, coffee. Taste has smoke, pine, slight cream, a bit of hops. Dry, acidic finish with a hint of caramel. smoke dominates without being overwhelming.

Bottled in 2012 and matured in the bottle.
Black as a sin. Beautiful brown head that leaves a lot of lacing.

Nose: Roasted malt, vanilla, coffee, dried fruit, tobacco, dark chocolate, ash, dark bread and smoked meat.
Taste: Smoked meat, roasted malt, leather, dark chocolate, coffee, pine and licorice.
Medium body with little carbonation.
A great, complex brew with not to high ABV. I just love it!

L: Dark brown/black color with notes of dark red when light hits it, pours a creamy white head and a couple streaks of lacing on the glass.

S: A large hint of smoke and smoked meat leads it off, notes of charred wood, and roast and chocolate a very inviting beer. Though the smoke at times seems to overwhelm a few of the flavors.

T: Smoke and smoked meat lead off the taste, there are notes of charred wood, a medium dark chocolate bitterness, this beer is for those who like smoke.

F: Creamy smooth mouthfeel, medium body and lower carbonation.

O: I really like the smoke character in this beer, it is a really nice porter.
