Notes / Commercial Description:
The dark, robust body and pronounced smoky flavor of this limited edition beer make it an adventuresome taste experience. Alaskan Smoked Porter is produced in limited "vintages" each year on November 1 and unlike most beers, may be aged in the bottle much like fine wine.

This will be the 100th brewery I review a beer from. Way to go Alaskan.

22oz bottle (2010) into a snifter. Pours a cola brown w/ a light tan fizzy head that dissipates pretty quickly.

Aroma is a smoky sweetness reminiscent of a rauchbier, combined with rich chocolate.

Taste is a nice roasty sweetness balanced by peppery smokiness. Chocolate and spice.

Mouthfeel is really clean and dry; vanishes off the palate with each sip - but never thin or weak.

Overall I wasn't sure what to expect with this one, but I like it. Maybe a little lacking in complexity but the smoke gives this beer a unique twist that works really well.

Had on tap at Neighborhood resteraunt in San Diego. I had been wanting to try this beer for a long time as I love smoke beers.

The beer pours a dark brown almost black color with a bit of brown oily head.

The beer smells strongly of smoke. You can detect abit of raosty coffee, but who are we kidding, it was mostly smoke.

The beer tastes amazing. VERY smokey taste throughout. However, unlike some smoked porters where the smoke is not balanced or does not feel "blended" well, this one tastes smooth throughout. Very nice flavor.

The mouthfeel was fairly smooth and creamy.

Overall, best smoked porter I have ever had. Highly recommended.

Pours out black as night with a two finger, dark-beige head with retention of a few minutes and thus very good

Smell is of smoke, roasted malts, and dark fruits. Taste is even more forward with smoke and definately comes in with roasted malts and dark fruits. Basically the nose meets the taste but the taste is a little more definate. Really good Smoke Forward. Nice!!!!

Best commercial smoked beer I have had, and loving smoked beer I have had a lot.

Start with a great porter, a little more black malt than I like in a porter, but that is a taste preference. It is certainly well within style.

Add a significant amount of smoke and you come out with a great beer.

App - Black

Smell - smokey, acrid, with some chocolate and then more smoke

Taste - Great combination of porter and smoke. Easy to drink and enough flavor and complexity to entertain. Could easily knock back a few of these.

Mouthfeel - thick and rich like you expect from a porter

Overall - Well anything can be better, but I am not sure how!

Shared a 473 ML 1 PINT bottle of this w/ CurtisMcArthur and other BA Friends in Nashville, TN. Poured from the Dusk colored bottle w/ deer in the background into a 12oz Tulip Glass. Has the year "2000" above the faded SMOKED PORTER label. Quite the vintage!

Aroma- The aroma starts off more smokey than you can imagine! Very rich maltiness finishes off the aroma then. Definitely came from the aging.

Appearance- Pours a .5 finger head that is dark brown and lasts for an average amount of time. Has a dark brown colored body that is clear when put up to the light. Leaves dark brown suds behind.

Flavor- The drink started just like the aroma with tons of richness and high smokiness. Very smooth like a black ale and has a lager like finish. Light roastiness and coffee at the finish also. Very low bitterness.

Mouthfeel- Light Bodied, Light-Medium Carbonation, Smooth, and has a slight bit of alcohol warming.

Overall Impression- Not sure how the current Alaskan Smoked Porters are but this one could have used a bit more body to it. This could have been from its date of over 10+. Enjoyed the aroma and taste big time nonetheless! I suggest you getting some of this now and aging it (I will be).

A- pours dark mahogany almost black with a thin and fresh tan collar some spotty lacing

S- was smoked malts , roasted toffee, caramel and cocoa

T- followed the nose the smoke was present first but it complemented the great porter flavors of chocolate and coffee nice malt profile with just the right amout of smoke

M- was nicely textured , creamy malty and velvet, with smoke

O- i loved this smoked porter as it was nicely balanced with the smoke and malts, will age 2 more of these

2011 Vintage

Pours a dark brown that appears a dense black in the glass. A long lasting head forms and slowly settles to a thick cap. Moderate amount of sticky lacing is left on the glass.

Aroma is quite smokey and is the dominant element. Faint hints of chocolate and evergreens.

Has very good smoke flavor. The porter flavors do not come out enough for me, but I cannot complain about the level of smokiness. Bitterness is low which I think compliments the flavor. Just a slight sweetness.

Medium body but just a tad overcarbonated. Otherwise solid.

Definately one of the best smoked porters on the market. This is worth keeping one around for aging as I could imagine the flavors melding nicely.
