Notes / Commercial Description:
The dark, robust body and pronounced smoky flavor of this limited edition beer make it an adventuresome taste experience. Alaskan Smoked Porter is produced in limited "vintages" each year on November 1 and unlike most beers, may be aged in the bottle much like fine wine.

Dark brown (nearly black) body topped with slightly tan, frothy head. Leaves tons of lacework on the glass.

As a smoked-salmon junkie, I can easily pick up on the distinctive smell of alder. A very "authentic" smoke smell; reminds me of salmon bakes. Underneath it is some sweet malt aroma.

Though striking in its smoke smell, smokey flavors (thankfully) take a back seat to a really nice pallet of sweet malt flavors: very subtle notes of chocolate, coffee, and sweet maltiness. It has a nice crisp finish that I like in a good porter.

Robust and fine carbonation, medium body, just a little bit of stickyness.

A smoked beer is something I'm rarely in the mood for, but this one is probably the best of the style I've encountered so far.

2011 vintage. I heard about this beer long before I got into craft beer, from a homebrewer in Alaska. Been wanting to try it for many years, and finally picked up a bottle.

Pours a very dark rich chocolate brown. Appears nearly black in the glass, with little light even at the edges. One-finger medium-tan head, fades slowly and leaves decent lacing. Looks tasty.

Smells like a campfire - deep, woody, smoky malts, with a bit of salty tang. There's a hint of smoked ham in their as well, but it's not as meaty as many smoked beers. Has a richness and roasty character in the background that reminds me it's a porter.

Tastes like, well, a good smoked porter. The smoke is a bit more subdued and complex in the flavor than in the smell. A great mix of smoked and roasted malts, with layers of flavor breaking through one after another. Starts out slightly sweet, followed by nice dark roasted malts (coffee), then the smoke powers through, bringing more lightness and perfume than in the smell. Has a slight bitter bite at the end, which I find refreshing.

Fantastic mouthfeel. Rich, creamy, and full, without being heavy. IMO, this is what every porter should feel like. Carbonation might be a tiny bit high, but it's near perfection.

This is a really good beer. So many smoked beers are just about the smoke. This one has a strong porter base that allows the smoke flavors to dance on top of it, without totally obscuring it. Mouthfeel is divine.

22oz. bottle poured into a tulip. 2008 Vintage. Thanks for sharing Matt!

(A)- Pours a fairly thick black color. Some tan bubbles and froth/lace.

(S)- Some nice roasted coffee and hickory smoke. Lots of raisin and prune.

(T)- Heavy on the smoke, but integrated well too with some raisin and mild roasted components.

(M)- A smooth carbonation level and a nice balance. It is definitely heavy on the smoke, but it is well integrated too.

(D)- This is a great porter. And an even better example of how to properly add smoke flavor into a beer.

A: Pours a deep black with a two finger mocha colored head on top. Retention was decent, reducing to a thin layer on top. Some nice lacing all around the glass.

S: Probably the best smelling smoky beer I have come across, not overpowering at all. There is a little bit of sugary sweetness and some very faint dark fruit.

T: Nice smoky flavor, again, not overpowering, blends nicely with some roasted malt, coffee, and a little bit of dark fruit.

M: Medium bodied with moderate carbonation. Not sure if it is the smoke, but has a very dry finish.

O: Definitely like it, but not as much as I was hoping. Can see why people do enjoy this beer though.

Had this beer at my last tasting. This beer pours a nice dark brown to almost black color with a thin tan head. The smell is smoke up front followed by a nice roasted malt character. The flavor is very similar but the smoke is nowhere near as prominent as in other smoked porters I have had (this is a good thing) the smokiness is followed by a little bit of roast. The mouthfeel is fairly dry and moderate carbonation. Overall a good beer and I would love to make me some chili with this beer.

2008 vintage

Deuane surprises me again.

A - Pours a deep, dark brown body with some ruby highlights towards the finger of foamy, light brown head shows spotty retention and leaves some light lacing

S - There is a lot of smoke and charcoal for being three years old...more roast and dark fruits also linger

T - Amongst all the roast and charcoal there is a semi-sweetness to the's light and lingers in the background throughout...dark roasted malts and BBQ charcoal are the stars...there is some dark chocolate that sneaks towards the end

M - Full, lots of smoke and charcoal, dark chocolate

O - I was impressed with how well this Smoked Porter held up...I know this is one of the better smoked porters out there, but for three years this one still had a lot going on...I wouldn't mind trying a fresh bottle

A- dark brown with a creamy mocha colored head that last for a long time.

S- smells of smoke right away, reminds me of a BBQ. Maybe some chocolate, coffee notes in the background.

T- roasted, smoke flavors hit you first and both linger in your mouth. Good bitterness to round out the flavor, keeps it well balanced.

M- full bodied, high carbonation.

O- solid beer that is worth trying out each year when it comes out. Not my cup of tea for everyday, but its a good beer. I'm going to have to try and find a couple more smoked porters now.

A: Great dark brown color with a small amount of tan head and a decent lacing.

S: Hint of dark chocolate. The biggest smell I get is a roasty, smoky smell. It reminds me of barbeque ribs. Hope it tastes as good as it smells!

T: Great taste to it. Initially has a roasty flavor full of body and BBQ type malts. The finish feels like you are breathing out air from a smoker. Very unique taste and simple flavors that work very well together.

M: Moderate thick mouthfeel.

O: Overall, I am a fan of this beer. I enjoy the uniqueness of the beer and I think Alaskan Brewing Co brewed an excellent porter.
