I picked up a bottle of Alaskan Brewing's Icy Bay IPA last week for $1.59 at The Lager Mill. This is the first time I've seen this beer around and I thought it was worth taking a chance on, so lets see how it goes. Best by 12/24/14. Poured from a brown 12oz bottle into a imperial pint glass.
A- The label looks ok, it's a little odd with a surfer on it and I think it's not too eye catching. It poured a amber orange color that took on more of a darker amber orange color when held to the light with just about two fingers worth of off white head that died down to a thin ring that stayed till the end and it left some nice sticky rings of lacing behind. This is a pretty nice looking beer, I have no complaints.
S- The aroma starts off with a slightly higher amount of medium bitterness with the malts being the first to show up and they impart some slightly grainy, sweet malt and very bready aromas with some doughy yeast showing up in the background. Up next comes the hops which impart a mixture of fruity, piney and floral hop aromas with the citrus rind hop aromas sticking out a little more than the other aspects. This beer had a nice aroma, but i wish it was a little more fragrant.
T- The taste seems to be very similar to the aroma, but it's a little lighter and it still starts off with a medium amount of sweetness with the malts being the first to show up and they impart the same malty aspects that I got in the aroma with the bready malts sticking out the most and there's still some doughy yeast showing up in the background. Up next comes the hops which impart the exact same aspects that they did in the aroma with the citrus rind hops still sticking out the most. On the finish there's slightly lower amount of medium bitterness with a bready malt, citrus hop, piney and floral aftertaste. This beer tasted decent, but I thought it was just a little bland for the style.
M- Smooth, fairly clean, fairly crisp, medium bodied with a medium amount of carbonation. The mouthfeel was nice and it worked well with this beer.
Overall I thought this was an ok beer and I thought it was a very average example of the style, the hop profile wasn't bad, but it could have used a little more bitterness to give it that bite that a nice IPA should have. This beer had ok drinkability, it was smooth, fairly clean, fairly crisp, not too filling and the taste didn't do a good job at holding my attention, one is enough for me, I have no urge to drink another one in a row since the flavor just can't hold my attention. What I like the most about this beer was the appearance, it looked pretty nice and true to style. What I like the least about this beer was the taste and drinkability, it just wasn't as good as I had hoped and it left me wanting more from this beer. I wouldn't buy this beer again, it's very easy to find a much better IPA and I can't say I would recommend it as a good example of the style. All in all I wasn't impressed with this beer, it had some nice aspects, but it also had some that were pretty weak which made for a very average IPA. This isn't my favorite from this brewery and it's the middle to lower end of the style. Better luck next time guys, this IPA could use a little bit of work.

12 oz. can, best by 01/02/24. My second beer from Alaskan Brewing Co.
A: A tawny golden. Creamy white head. Good lacing.
S: Aromas are fresh and floral. Smells kind of sweet almost.
T: Definitely an interesting flavor profile here. Super smooth & creamy, maybe it's the glacier water.. Super pale, bready, malty, almost more of a pale ale in flavor even, were it not for the modest 6.2% abv.
F: Smooth, creamy, light, easy-drinking.
Overall, very nice.

Pours a honey amber color with a nice head which dissipates somewhat slowly and some lacing.
Aroma is slight dank and pine and maybe a bit of citrus.
Taste is definitely earthy, dank, piney, and crisp.
Mouthfeel is great with some carbonation and medium body.
Overall good but not great.

Pours golden yellow with nice fluffy white foamy cap from can to pint glass. Crisp, hoppy and clean with notes of pine. Decent Alaskan local brew at 6.2%abv. Part of beer tasting on cruise.

Look - pale gold, clear, soapy white head
Smell - floral, grapefruit
Taste - citrus, spice, grapefruit, apple
Feel - medium light body, light carbonation, light bitterness, dry finish
Overall - A delightful beer that seems more like a pale ale. I liked the grapefruit and apple notes that came thru. Also, a nice light bitterness in there too. Thanks to my Mom for bringing this back from her Alaskan cruise. I paired Icy Bay IPA with Come Sail Away by Styx. Cheers and Enjoy!

Pour is crystal clear orange/amber with a thick white cap, good retention, nice lacing. Aroma is very faint, almost non-existent. A touch of citrus and pine. Flavor is a bit bolder, the same citrus and pine. Feel is on the light side of medium bodied and lightly carbonated. Overall, a drinkable IPA with no standout qualities.

Bought a 1 pint 3.2 oz tall can from a liquor store in Skagway, Alaska. Nice head and lace. Flavor is somewhat earthy, like a pine flavor. There's a slight citrus flavor similar to pineapple, also having subtle sweetness. The finish is more pine and slight bitterness.

Orange-brown pour with moderate head. Traditional piney IPA aroma. Taste is old school IPA: pine with a bit of citrus. Not as full-bodied as I expected. Mouthfeel is lighter than expected. Overall flood, but not great.

12oz can poured into pint glass. Picked up from grocery store as part of $11 sixer mixer. BEST BY 071422 printed on bottom of can. So this one still has 2 months left in it.
Appearance - Pours large billowing offwhite head with fine to medium-fine relatively even foam, with no lacing or stick, but absolutely amazing retention. Slightly hazy medium gold body. 5
Smell - Refreshing and bold but not overpowering hop. 4.5
Taste - Solid, flavorful, but not overpowering. Balanced, if a bit on the malty side, especially for an IPA. Interesting. 4.75
Mouthfeel - Bold, medium bodied but with a relatively clean finish that still reminds you that you just took a sip of a good beer. 5
Overall - Possibly the best in style I've had. 5
