Style: American IPA

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 6.20%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
Alaskan IPA is honey gold in color with a fruity, citrus aroma. An enticing blend of hops and our dry hopping process, in which hops are added directly to tanks during fermentation, give this brew a very intense, complex aromatic character with a refreshing hop finish.

Poured from a twelve ounce bottle into a snifter.

Things start off pleasantly with a hazy, copper-colored body and a frothy, creamy, pale white head that persists for a good amount of time. Carbonation trickles through the body.

Smells of citrus and caramel blend together for a sweet nose. The hop aroma is resinous and pungent and difficult to ignore.

Interestingly, the citrus disappears on the tongue, replaced by an earthy, more grainy hop flavor. There's a hint of orange or grapefruit eventually, but it is definitely second fiddle here. From the malt I taste mild notes of bread and caramel before the hops reemerge for a pungent, slightly marijuana-like finish.

My first instinct is to guess this is one of the new session IPAs as the mouthfeel is light and almost what I think of as thin and watery. There's enough malt there to take notice and provide some body, but this brew feels like one of those that tries hard to be big on flavor and light-drinking. There's a bitter finish that is pretty enjoyable.

Icy Bay IPA is good. I don't know whether it's a session IPA or a pale ale or just a good old IPA, but it's good.
