Alaskan "Freeride Pale Ale"
Served on-draught into a pilsner glass at Oskar Blues Liquids and Solids. Reviewed from notes taken in summer 2012.

A: Pours a half beige somewhat thick head with some cream but of poor retention. Colour is a dull orange juice. Nontransparent. No yeast particles are visible. No bubble show.

Sm: Orange peel citrus notes, orange juice, citrus ester hops, light clean bright malts. A mild strength aroma.

T: Orange peel citrus notes, murky malts, and distinct dull orange juice. A bit sour - in a bad sense - this tastes like off orange juice. Simple. Not at all subtle. Mediocre.

Mf: Smooth and wet. Imperfect carbonation. Off thickness. Hardly tailored to the flavour.

Dr: Drinkable but strange. Very much littered with off flavours, leaving me wondering if the tap line is clean. Off orange juice is distinct, even dominant. I wouldn't get this again. A huge disappointment from Alaskan.

06.22.17 impression from a bottle:

Pours a vibrant copper body devoid of any yeast/lees particulate with a frothy off-white cap sitting atop. Spot-on for a pale ale and more appealing than most expressions of the style by my estimation.

AROMA: Citrus fruit, bright floral aromatics, a blip of bitter citrus rind, orange peel, pale malts.

Aromatic intensity is mild, but the hop aromatics are surprisingly pungent for a pale ale, promising an assertively hopped expression of the style that nevertheless seems to be quite well balanced. I'm eager to try it.

TASTE: Citrusy yet a bit too pungent and bitter for a pale ale, lacking the counterbalancing pale malt sweetness necessary to keep it in check. Nevertheless, its hop profile is enjoyable, marrying classic floral hop flavours (I suspect a C hop, maybe Cascade?) with assertive citrusy flavours to good effect. The result is a tasty brew in spite of its imbalance, and one that boasts pretty good depth of flavour for the style.

TEXTURE: A bit too overcarbonated and aggressive to be refreshing, but its smooth wet texture keeps it drinkable and its medium body is apt for the style and flavour profile. A juicier lighter more delicate feel might play better with the floral and fruity flavours, but it's above average in execution all things considered.

OVERALL: It's above average in almost every respect save for intricacy, where it falls short. This is a simple beer - and that would be okay were it more refreshing or insanely drinkable. As-is, it's a casual sipper I'd pair with Americanized Chinese takeout or pizza but wouldn't pay much attention to. Compared to Alaskan's generally impressive catalogue, this isn't strong work, but it's by no means a bad brew and it's priced right for its quality. Well worth trying even if it won't blow you away, but those trying to find a widely available pale ale that's of good quality and is fairly priced are better off looking to Sierra Nevada, Bear Republic, or Deschutes.

A: A medium golden beer with good clarity. The bottle has a date of "B082813" which I assume means it's best buy date is ten days from now.

S: a medium-strong citrus hops aroma with a bit of the Simcoe character. There is a light malt sweetness.

T: A Strong hops bitterness with a medium citrus hops flavor. Light malt flavor and very little malt sweetness. The balance is fairly bitter. The finish is dry with an aftertaste of citrus bitterness.

M: Medium bodied with a medium-strong level of carbonation.

O: An APA with good hops flavor and aroma but this bottle is getting toward the end of the shelf life. I'd love to get a fresh bottle and think it would show better, but as is it's a pretty good pale ale.

Presentation: It was poured from a brown 12 oz bottle into a tulip glass. The label lists the abv at 5.3 % abv.

Appearance: The body has a nice orange amber color with great clarity. It has a small slightly off white head that slowly settles. As it settles it makes some nice lacing on the glass.

Smell: The aroma has citrusy grapefruit like hops over light bready sweetness. As I drink I notice some very light peach and orange peel notes as well.

Taste / Palate: It has the good drinkable medium body with a nice balance of hops and malt. The edge favors hops and it has nice citrusy notes running through out. The base is a sweet bready and lightly caramelized maltiness.

Pours clear, orange-yellow in color with 1/3 inch head. Taste is pale malt, orange, and honey. Slightly bitter, medium-light bodied, with moderate carbonation. Makes for a solid, above average, west coast style pale ale.

Grassy hop nose with some meadow elements over light malts.
Orange amber with a slight protein haze under a 1/2" bone white lightly bubbled foam cap that produces fine lace.
Palate: Crisp and dry with a touch of tanginess with light melon, hop spice and long lingering fruit flavors.
Medium body and slightly above medium carbonation.
Sessionable.

Poured from a 12 oz. bottle into a Sam Adams "Perfect Pint" glass.

Appearance: Pours a bright copper golden orange with a lot of rising bubbles. Huge five finger off white head with good retention. Leaves a lot of lacing clinging to the glass.

Smell: A bright citrus hop forward aroma with a solid biscuity malt backing. Citrus hops upfront with good hints of orange peel, grapefruit, tangerine, mango, and lemon. Some floral and earthy hop hints as well as some pine spice and grass. Solid bready malt backing with hints of biscuit, cracker, caramel, and yeast. A pretty solid West Coast style aroma.

Taste: Like it smells, a bright hop forward pale ale taste with a good taste of citrus and biscuit. Citrus hops with notes of juicy orange, grapefruit, tangerine, lemon, and mango. Earthy hop notes of grass and pine. Also some floral hop notes. Soft bready malt presence with a taste of biscuit, grains, crackers, caramel, and yeast. A pretty solid well balanced APA taste.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied with a moderate amount of carbonation. Nicely creamy, juicy, and drying.

Overall: A pretty solid take on the West Coast style American Pale Ale. Good citrus taste with a solid biscuit malt backing.
