For whatever reason the hops on this one come through with a
bit too much vegetable character. Otherwise a good beer.

I'm a sucker for pale ales loaded with tropical aromas. Freeride is right up my alley. It's a touch too dry to deliver all of the tropical fruit promised on the nose, but otherwise, it's a great APA.

Poured into a pint glass I get about an inch of head. Little bit rocky head. Light copper in color. It's kinda light but we'll balanced. Not bitter at the end. Has drinkability.

Very nice session beer; Alaskan's calling card seems to be crisp, clean tasting brews, and this one certainly fits that mold. Smells citrusy, tastes refreshing but definitely hoppy, and has a nice carbonated feel. Another solid choice from Alaskan Brewing.

12oz bottle poured into a shaker. The aroma is a bright floral and citrus with supporting tones of light bread which eventually settles on a caramel aroma near the middle of the glass. The beer is clear and oily with an amber hue and a white head that has a light, filmy retention and only a light lace. The taste is a medium / medium high sweet and medium bitter. It's smooth with a light zip of a carbonation, and a medium body with flavors of bread, caramel, and oranges that finishes crisp with spice and sweet citrus. The finish is a bit waxy with a citrus rind character that mellows quickly and leaves an aftertaste of mild toast and citrus.

Cloudy blood orange color with thin white head; very little lacing. Sweet potato nose. Odd bandaid flavor, sweet malt, and cinnamon/spicy finish. Lite, watery mouthfeel with overly sweet malty body. This beer was odd all around.

I picked up a can of Alaskan Brewing's Freeride APA yesterday for $1.59 at The Lager Mill. This can caught my eye and I thought it was worth giving a try, so lets see how it goes. No visible canning date. Poured from a 12oz can into a Imperial pint glass.

A- The can looks pretty good, the design goes well with the name and I think it's eye catching. It poured an orange amber color that took on more of an amber hue when held to the light with a light over one fingers worth of bubbly off white head that died down to a thin ring that stayed till the end and it left some spotty lacing behind. This is a pretty nice looking Pale Ale, I have no complaints.

S- The aroma starts off with a medium amount of sweetness with the hops being the first to show up and they impart a mixture of citrus rind, floral, grassy and earthy hop aromas with the citrus rind sticking out the most and there's also some tropical fruit aromas showing up. Up next comes the malts which impart a sweet malt and light caramel malt like aroma with a slight bit of doughy yeast coming through in the background. This beer has a good aroma, it's got a nicely complex hop profile.

T- The taste seems to be similar to the aroma, but it's lighter and more balanced with a medium amount of sweetness being the first to show up and it's followed by the hops being the first to show up and they are much lighter this time with more of a citrus rind hop aspect that isn't as complex. Up next comes the malts which stick out a little more this time and it impart more of grainy and slightly bready aspect with some doughy yeast showing up in the background. On the finish there's a lighter amount of medium bitterness with a hoppy and grainy malt aftertaste. This is a pretty nice tasting Pale Ale, but I wish the hop profile was more like it was in the aroma.

M- Smooth, slightly refreshing, clean crisp, on the light side of being medium bodied with a medium amount of carbonation. The mouthfeel was good and it worked well with this beer.

Overall I thought this was a pretty nice beer and I thought it was a good example of the style, it had all the balance that I aspect from the style, but I found myself wishing the hop profile was fruitier and bolder like it was in the aroma. This beer had nice drinkability, I could drink a couple of these in a row and they aren't too filling. What I like the most about this beer is the aroma and mouthfeel, they were both good and the highlights of this beer. What I liked the least about this beer is that the hop profile in the taste wasn't more like the hop profile in the aroma. I would buy this beer again when looking for a nice Pale Ale and I would recommend trying if your a fan of the style. All in all I liked this beer, I thought it was a tasty Pale Ale and I think with a little work it has the potential to be a very good Pale Ale. It's not my favorite beer from this brewery and I would say it's above average for the style. Nice job guys this was a nice Pale Ale, keep it up.
