Poured from the tap.

The beer is a rich, amber colour. Very light nose, hoppy, citrus, and clean. The taste was not as bitter as expected, but had a citrus and hop flavour. Very clean, balanced, and not intense. Slight bitter aftertaste.

Would I buy it again? Yes.

Poured from a 12 oz. bottle into a Surly Darkness chalice.

Appearance: Pours a clear copper amber orange with a moderate amount of rising bubbles. Solid two fingers of off white head with decent retention. Leaves a good amount of lacing around the glass.

Smell: A big juicy and earthy hop forward aroma with big hints of citrus and earthy hops with some backing caramel malt. Upfront scent of ripe citrus hops with hints of grapefruit, orange peel, mango, pineapple, apricot, lemon, and tangerine. Earthy hop presence with hints of dank pine resin and grass. Solid backing presence of malt with hints of caramel, grains, biscuit, yeast, and cracker. A very good hoppy aroma.

Taste: Like it smells, a very juicy and earthy hop driven IPA taste with big notes of citrus, pine, and caramel malt. Big upfront taste of ripe and juicy citrus hops with notes of orange peel, grapefruit, mango, apricot, pineapple, tangerine, and lemon. Earthy and herbal hops with notes of dank and spicy pine resin and grass. Hops are nicely bitter and oily. Backing of sweet malt with notes of caramel, biscuit, grains, cracker, and yeast. A very good IPA taste.

Mouthfeel: Full bodied with a moderate level of carbonation. Very juicy, oily, and drying. Alcohol heat is minimal.

Overall: A very good Imperial IPA. Has a West Coast style presence of tropical fruits with a solid caramel malt backing.

From BeerAdvocate Magazine #86 (Mar 2014):

Hoppy, Fruity, Dry, Deceiving

An artfully balanced DIPA that’s dangerously drinkable. That’s all you need to know, but if you’re looking for more: super smooth and creamy. Grassy, piney, leafy, minty, and fruity hops with suggestions of orange and onion. Solid pale malt sweetness and a touch of honey provide backbone and balance. But for the most part, it’s a dry beer, which highlights the hops, while the creamy mouthfeel and dryness hides the 8.5% deceivingly well. Respect this beer.

Very middle of the road for me. Surprised to see such high ratings for this.

Positives: Relatively inexpensive for the ABV and a 6 pack. Hides the alcohol well. Balanced.

Negatives: Nothing stands out. Very mellow in all of the flavors. This beer is fresh (within a month of brewing) and still does nothing fantastic for me. Probably would not buy again, I assume after I finish this one if someone asked me what was special about it I would not be able to recall anything about the flavor. It's carbonated?

A pretty beer. In a snifter the beer poured a clear amber color with a small white head. There was a bit of lace.

A mostly pine aroma. Some citrus. Sweet malt.

Pine resin taste primarily. A wee bit of grapefruit. Caramel.

Sticky. Sweet and hoppy.

Nice beer.

Bottled on 4/5/14

Appearance: A finger worth of head on the pour which stuck to the sides of the glass while drinking. Active carbonation is about right for the style. The color is dark orange, light red.

Smell: Big bitter hops run head long into sweeter bright malts. Hops take on a heavy saturated citrus profile while the malts have a toffee, caramel aroma. Lingering bitterness sticks around with sticky malt.

Taste: Pine and saturated citrus blast on the front. Like the aroma the taste is filled with heavy caramel and toffee with weigh down on the palate. Some herbal fruits and grass pop up toward the back end but quickly get hidden by the bigger tones.

Mouthfeel: Big, heavy malts and hops.

Overall: Freshness may have been an issue here, but I feel like the base of this beer is just another malty and piney DIPA. Mehh.

22oz bottle served in pint glass. Beer pours red amber in color, crystal clear, with an ample orange-white head. On the darker side for an IPA, and smells maltier than you'd imagine a beer called "Hop° Thermia". Flavor is high-alpha bitterness, like citrus rind, but finishes quite clean. Bonus points for the great finish and crispness on what feels like an IBU bomb. But as a DIPA, this beer is average at best. Maybe as an Imperial Red I would have thought more highly of it. Also to be fair Alaskan Brewing Co. is pretty mediocre most of the time, and this is probably better than most from them.

Hopothermia pours a dark golden color with a big lacing fluffy white head. There is a earthy and roasted malty aroma. The taste is more balanced, earthy flavors, some hop flavors, the warmth from the alcohol comes through. Nice body, a little flat. Overall it has some big flavors, but is very malty.
