Murky straw color. A balanced sourness and a bit of hoppiness. I think they were aiming for Cantillon Cuvee de Champions with this one. Doesn't quite hit the mark, if that's the case, but is good nonetheless. There's something a little non-lambic-y in its bretty qualities. Lemon, some minerality. Good!

Poured from a caged-and-corked 750mL bottle into my Drie de Fonteinen tumbler.

Cloudy naples yellow body with a lasting magnolia cap receding slowly to a perpetual popped collar and a raft of microbubbles. Delicate sandy lacing; superior retention.

Tart, lemony aroma with lower levels of funk (barnyard, cheese).

Bracing tartness on the palate, suffused with lemon seeds, wild sorrel, and unripe apples. Brett. adds some distinctive flavors leading into the finish which is not-quite-puckering but very dry. Some minerality and tannins appear from the oak. No bitterness. Excellent!

For the style, the carbonation level is quite high, though it gives the beer a summery quality and ensures the flavors will flow into every nook and cranny of your sensory apparatus.

Assuming they primed with more Brett. or related organisms, this would be a good candidate for aging. It is impressively sour and tastes very much like a blend of 1-3 year old lambics, although it has a certain uniformity suggestive of commercial practices compared to the rustic/traditional (rather than cultivated) properties of the best Belgian examples. Still, this is superbly crafted and blended and may gain complexity with some age...it is really nipping at the heels of Temptation, Cable Car, etc.

Pours an unclear light orange with some fine foam.

Smell is acidic with some straw and horse blanket preceding notes of lemon, peach and Seville oranges.

Taste is planted firmly in the sour camp. Not mouthpuckering, but not far off. Notes if apple orange, gooseberries and candied orange peel is followed by and earthy, grapefruity bitterness. Great balance, a pretty damn deep in flavor.

Mouthfeel is medium, with prickly carbonation.

Overall, a terrific sour, balanced and complex, but still accessible.

Pros: has that classic lambic taste; lots of funk, sour apples, and lemon notes. It looks great out of the bottle with a slightly cloudy, yellow-ish appearance. Nose is subtle, but complex. A lot of effort was put into this beer.

Room for Improvement: the mouthfeel doesn't match the taste; it doesn't linger on the palate for long.

Given the nature of the style, I'm excited to see if aging has any effect on this. It could be a totally different beer in a few years!
