Never really contemplated that I would ever be writing a review of a Bridgeport beer after they have closed up shop but here we are.

In the early part of the decade, there was this craze of "black" ipas. This geographical area even tried to brand them Cascadian Dark Ales, something that generally failed as the media beer neckbeard overlords tended to be from other regions. So while the same chumps are quick to call something an NE IPA, this region doesn't have the same pull in terms of homerism.

Pours black with a 1/3" beige head. Aroma was of roasted malt moreso than hoppiness, looks like they went all bittering hops and pocketed the dry hop money. Schwarzbier is about what you would call this before it came out. Dark crystal malt gives you both bitterness and a roasted sensation. With several C hops providing a hefty dose of bitterness, this is totally like that ibu war 90s beer meets a later day sensation taking the excessive crystal malt and further roasting it. Gimmick stuff that didn't pan out.

Served in a Lagunitas mason jar.

Kinda sounds like a bad '90s action flick, doesn't it? Anyway, this stuff pours a clear midnight black-sienna topped by a finger of wan khaki foam. The nose comprises dank and musty moss, dark cocoa powder, and a touch of burnt molasses. The taste holds notes of mild menthol, old mint, treacle, light tobacco, and a bit of sweet maple syrup. The body is a light-leaning medium, with a light moderate carbonation and a drying finish. Overall, the hops here seemed off-the-reservation, and the bitterness resulting from their collaboration with the dark malts was muddled and off-putting. It's beers like this that make me wonder why black IPAs (or "black pale ales", in this case) are so popular amongst brewers and drinkers alike.

(Served in a Nonic)
A- This beer pours a jet black body with microbubbles trailing up the sides and a sticky oatmeal colored head that last a bit.

S- This beer has a musty herbal hops aroma but it otherwise pretty clean

T- The slightly pungent dark woody hops mellows into a slight tart hint in the finish. There is a soft black malt bitterness that blends with some dandelion hop flavors in the finish.

M- the medium mouthfeel has a slight slippery texture in the finish.

O- The mellow flavor is more pungent that other hop flavors and the roasted black malt flavor grows as the beer opens. The tartness gets a bit stronger as it opens up aswell.

Poured in to a tulip. Somewhat translucent black body with hints of ruby. 1/4 finger head that faded quick.

Aroma was a bit citrusy, floral and hints of roasted malt. Nothing too complex, pretty straight forward.

Taste was a bit on the roasty/chocolatey side. Mild malty flavors, a bit bready. Citrus and grapefruit hop flavors that turn to a mellow bitterness.

Mouthfeel was light body, medium carb and crisp finish.

Could use a bit more malt and hop flavors.
