Pours a dark black, minimal thin off white head. Smells of oak, vanilla, coffee, some cocoa. Strong bourbon characteristics at initial taste, coffee, carob, oak and vanilla notes. Mouthfeel is incredibly thin for a stout – as previous reviewers commented – more akin to a brown ale or porter. Fair amount of effervescence.
Not unpleasant – but seemed to lack many of the characteristics I find important to a stout. I’ve got 5 left of the six pack I bought – I’ll probably take them to a party and throw them into a cooler – never to be seen again. Not my cup of tea. (Note – I was a little sad after drinking this beer – I had such high hopes. . .)

If you know how they create this brew, than you know how lacking it truly is. Compare this to a beer of the same style and you will realize how much is missing. It almost tastes like a malt. Poorly designed, falsely advertised and innappropriately balanced. Not one I'll buy again.

$ 15.00 (Including tax)/four pack ($ 0.312/oz) at Franklin Beer, Frankin, PA
Bottle marked 61129W2120149 at 42 degrees into a hand washed and dried JK snifter; allowed to warm to 50 degrees
Aroma – coffee and roasted malt and more coffee
Head large (Maximum 5.2 cm, aggressive pour), tan, creamy with rocks, average retention, diminishing to a three mm ring and a thin layer with central rocky island
Lacing - none
Body – dark brown/black, opaque
Flavor – begins slightly sweet with caramel and coffee notes. Ends slightly bitter. Not picking up any bourbon or oak flavors. No hops, no alcohol, no diacetyl.
Palate – medium, almost creamy, soft carbonation

To me, definitely more of a porter than a stout. Drinkable but heavier on the coffee side than the beer side. Four and done.

Appearance 3.5, Aroma 3.75, Flavor 3.5, Palate 4.25, Overall 3.5. Rating 3.64, rDev +2.2%.

I've been over-indulging in this style today, but what the hey. This one works pretty well. It is unique. In the end, I am reminded of my attitude about these before Founders KBS (which is sublime) - why not just have a shot of bourbon with a nice stout, and sip it pleasantly.

This baby looks like it should, black and beautiful. The fine head is just a little fizz. The aroma is a nice balance of bourbon, malts, roasty smells, hops and alcohol.

Similarly, the taste is fairly complex. It has a nice balance of all the above, and the aftertaste is like a shot of bourbon, only very mellow.

This stout works better than I remembered it, and I recommend it as a reasonably easy drinking version of the style.

From a bottle, pours an opaque dark/black, with a dense tan head. Distinctive roasted malt-forward flavor with pronounced coffee flavors. Mouth-feel is really fulsome, decent carbonation, and flavors that don't fade.

12 oz bottle. Pours near black with thin beige head. Has the aroma of roasted coffee beans and cocoa. Taste is coffee, chocolate, rotated malt, smoke and a hint of bourbon. Pretty good stout.
