A: typical stout appearance, deep black body, khaki colored head. the head was only about 1 fingers worth and dissipated rather quickly yielding minimal lacing.

S: big coffee grounds, dark chocolate, slight hint of smoke and oak barrels. nicely balanced, alcohol pretty well hidden.

T: taste is quite artificial tasting. sweet cocoa nibs, coffee, nuts, watery, slight oak not much else

M: much lighter than i ever expected.. very light for this style. leaves a slight cocoa flavor on the palate but thats about it. very disappointed here.

O: overpriced for a 4 pack IMO. taste and mouth feel are definitely lacking. i've had this brew on tap many times in the past and its much much better.

I've been over-indulging in this style today, but what the hey. This one works pretty well. It is unique. In the end, I am reminded of my attitude about these before Founders KBS (which is sublime) - why not just have a shot of bourbon with a nice stout, and sip it pleasantly.

This baby looks like it should, black and beautiful. The fine head is just a little fizz. The aroma is a nice balance of bourbon, malts, roasty smells, hops and alcohol.

Similarly, the taste is fairly complex. It has a nice balance of all the above, and the aftertaste is like a shot of bourbon, only very mellow.

This stout works better than I remembered it, and I recommend it as a reasonably easy drinking version of the style.

$ 15.00 (Including tax)/four pack ($ 0.312/oz) at Franklin Beer, Frankin, PA
Bottle marked 61129W2120149 at 42 degrees into a hand washed and dried JK snifter; allowed to warm to 50 degrees
Aroma – coffee and roasted malt and more coffee
Head large (Maximum 5.2 cm, aggressive pour), tan, creamy with rocks, average retention, diminishing to a three mm ring and a thin layer with central rocky island
Lacing - none
Body – dark brown/black, opaque
Flavor – begins slightly sweet with caramel and coffee notes. Ends slightly bitter. Not picking up any bourbon or oak flavors. No hops, no alcohol, no diacetyl.
Palate – medium, almost creamy, soft carbonation

To me, definitely more of a porter than a stout. Drinkable but heavier on the coffee side than the beer side. Four and done.

Appearance 3.5, Aroma 3.75, Flavor 3.5, Palate 4.25, Overall 3.5. Rating 3.64, rDev +2.2%.

I don't get it. I paid $14.99 for a four pack and this is really not good. Not sure what the buzz is about.

Smells decent. But VERY thin, hard to call it a stout. Kind of sweet finish and then...that's it. A big disappointment.

Appearance: moderate carbonation, 1/3 inch head, opaque, black in color

Smell: oat, dark chocolate, roasted malt, and light bourbon

Taste: oat, dark chocolate, roasted malt, coffee, and light bourbon/vanilla on the finish

Mouthfeel: sweet and roasty, heavy-bodied, medium-low carbonation

Overall: This is an average roasty, coffee stout. The bourbon is faint if existent at all. I was expecting it to be a lot more pronounced. Not a bad beer, but nothing that really differentiates this from most other stouts. The original Ale is by far and away my favorite from this brewery.

This is okay... I was expecting a lot more to be honest, kind of a let down.

Poured into snifter; jet black with a thin fizzy brown head that fades quickly into a thin ring of foam. Smells of roasted malt and coffee, with slight bitter chocolate and dark fruit. Not much barrel character in the smell; not getting any oak, and only a tiny hint of bourbon. To be fair, the only other BA stouts I've had are BCBS, Dragon's Milk, and Cerburus (Bourbon), and those were all very strong on the bourbon character. Taste is roasted malt and bitter coffee, a hint of baking chocolate, smoothing out into sweetness and a tiny ghost of bourbon. Finishes wet and relatively clean, with some lingering coffee and sweetness. Mouthfeel is a bit thin and watery for an imperial stout.
Overall it's a good stout, but I'd expect something called "Bourbon Barrel Stout" to taste like it had been in a bourbon barrel at some point.
