Poured from 12 oz bottle into snifter.
A: Pours a moderately dark brown hue with 1/2 inch light tan head with decent retention. Lighter in color than expected.
S: Loads of vanilla, moderate amount of dark roast malt, and a hint of coffee. A bit unbalanced.
T: Burst of vanilla, quickly followed by bitter dark roast malt, and a quick hit of coffee (not great coffee). Hmmm...not so good.
M: Light-medium body. Not picking up on the bourbon barrel. Sweet, but off flavor...too fakey? Vanilla too strong. Mildly bitter coffee, again a bit off.
D: Disappointed in this one. Poor balance. Lacking the bourbon barrel aspects. Needs a bit of work to live up to what the label is promising.

A shiny dark brown pour fills to black with a creamy tan head settling to a thin collar leaving some lumps of lace.

Smell is roasty, woody, smoky and nutty with some cacao and cola.

Taste is nutty roast, cocoa and wafer with cola and root beer accents. Barrel adds sweetness, but little else, maybe a slight woody dryness in the aftertaste.

A moderate body with a light but soft filling froth finishes semi-dry.

I've had several bottles of Kentucky Bourbon Barrel Stout now - there has been a tremendous variation between bottles, which is very strange. Several have tasted very strongly of diacetyl (profoundly buttery). For the most part, they tend towards a theme:

The beer pours deep brown-black with a decent light brown head. The nose doesn't reveal much. The taste, while cold, doesn't give up much more than that - while the mouth feel isn't my favorite; the carbonation is just too aggressive.

When the beer warms up, the coffee comes out a bit. This isn't necessarily a good thing. The coffee tastes used and stale. The carbonation is lingering, still unpleasant.

The beer, unfortunately, is generally a let down.

Pours a very dark brown colour. Cold press coffee aroma, cocoa nib, a bit of vanilla bean. Zippy enough carb, smooth mocha to bourbon finish, but of oak and cocoa nib aftertaste.
