Had this on 2013-01-20 in Columbia, PA

A - Opaque dark brown with a short tan head and mild lacing.

S - Sour mash, light roasted grain, smoke and a touch of caramel. My first reaction to the smell wasn't favorable. It smelled "off". Subsequent smellings before tasting improved my impression a bit with some chocolate milk aroma and light coffee.

T - Acidic, sour cherry, charred grain, bourbon. Very little sweetness. Some hop and roasted bitterness in the aftertaste. I don't like this flavor.

M - Thick body and light-medium carbonation. Substantial feel.

O - Not my cup of tea.

Pours jet black with a small tan head. In the the aroma, small coffee notes. In the taste, coffee, a mellow roast, and a mellow oaky end. A small bite and a medium bodied mouthfeel, with a small dry coffee and roast in the aftertaste. Nice roast, big coffee, oak notes, but not much bourbon.

Kentucky Bourbon Barrel Stout

Bottle specifies this stout was brewed with coffee, then aged in oak barrels with Haitian coffee.

LOOK: Dark brown with a light off white head. Lacework is sparse but there.

SMELL: Vanilla, coffee, roasted malts, vanilla coffee. Hint of bourbon.

TASTE: Big time chocolate, vanilla and especially deep coffee flavors. Has a nice earthyness and depth of flavor. Detectable bourbon and oak notes. Light citrusy hop profile. As it warms more delicious vanilla/bourbon presence. Deep roasted notes keep winning out and gaining my favor.

FEEL: Full bodied, with a moderate tightly bubbled fine carbonation.

OVERALL: An impressive beer from Alltech's Lexington Brewery. I've had the bourbon barrel ale, a fine pale aged in bourbon barrels that now all too apparently pales by comparison.

A: very dark and opaque except right at the edges, small light-tan head.

S:starts off very coffee forward. For a little while during the warm up period there was a strong aroma of cigar smoke which was kind of off putting but that receded as it warmed more and became integrated with the coffee smell and a bit more pleasant but is still kind of hard to get past at times

T: dark roasted malts, again strong on the coffee flavor with a touch of chocolate. I start picking up a bit of vanilla from the barrels at the end and it becomes a little sweet.

M: on the thinner side of full. Lower carbonation

O: an alright beer. I agree with previous review comments that this strikes me much more as a coffee beer than a barrel-aged beer because the coffee is so dominant and the barrel characteristics so minimal. Maybe brewing with coffee and aging in the barrel with Haitian coffee as it says on the label is a bit of overkill. Would like to see them tone down the coffee and have a larger barrel presence.

Pours an opaque, very dark brown with a vibrant caramelized creme brûlée colored head sitting on top. Lovely aromas of smoke, strong coffee, and bourbon. Mouthfeel is pleasntly full and smooth without being thick. Flavors are complex and balanced, but in a piecemeal fashion. Blast of coffee up front with it smoothing out gradually to a sweetness that eventually presents a whisper of bourbon. This is a pretty fantastic stout.

A - Dark color with a think head

S - COFFEE! Also coffee, and coffee. Strong smell as soon as the bottle was uncapped. Faint odor of oak and caramelness.

T - Strong coffee flavor to match the strong smell. However I detected no bourbon flavor whatsoever.

F - Thinner than most stouts but acceptable. Carbonation was on high side

O - IF this was marketed as a coffee stout, I'd rank it higher. However it is a Bourbon Barrel Stout. I couldn't detect any bourbon flavor, or any other flavor for that matter aside from the coffee. Overall I'm disappointed as this is my favorite style of beer.

12 oz. bottle poured into Chimay chalice.

A: Black as night. Maybe half a finger of head shows itself for a split second - very fizzy dark tan foam - and is gone before I'm done writing this sentence. Pretty standard fare for a stout, I suppose.

S: This is barrel-aged? Not picking much up those barrel notes I crave. Instead the aroma is dominated by coffee. Roast malts and chocolate in the mix too. As it warms, oak and vanilla emerge, but very little.

T: This is barrel-aged? There's some hints of bourbon and vanilla, but again coffee is the foremost force here. It seems other reviewers are picking up more barrel notes than I am. Caramel, nuts and chocolate are present but subdued. I'm getting a slight cola note as well. Finish is burnt coffee and a touch of alcohol heat.

M: Not as thick and creamy as I want it to be. Medium-bodied with subtle but sharp carbonation bubbles.

O: It's a pretty good beer, but I want more barrel flavor. The guy at my local wine shop compared this to Founders Breakfast Stout. It is decidedly not Founders Breakfast Stout, but a decent brew nonetheless.

Pours an opaque black with garnet highlights and a solid beige head that dissipates slowly leaving no lacing.

Oak, tobacco, roast malt, soy, and toffee comprise the aroma, with notes of coffee, chocolate, and vanilla adding complexity. Smells savory.

Coffee dominated the flavor throughout. Chocolate and vanilla are subdued, with roasted malt and nutty notes emerging subsequently. Bourbon is a subtle afternote. As it warms, butter, vanilla, and oak become dominant.

Body is a touch light, with low carbonation and significant alcohol warmth. There's a hint of acrid astringency, but it's not offputting.

Overall, a lot more coffee than expected. A touch light in body, but a good brew.

Nestled in the heart of bourbon country has its privileges and Alltech's Lexington Brewing Company takes full advantage. The fresh and recent decanting of bourbon barrels means that these vessels are ripe for the picking for local brewers who wish to claim the complex nuances of bourbon for their beers. The brewery simply has no fear in brewing relatively tame recipes to reside in those magical barrels- the results are not simply "hints" of bourbon or "mild" wood complexities, but rather a changed beer that's uniquely Kentucky!

Dark as night, the stout ale opens with a deep brown hue that reminds that catches the eye with richly stained tree bark and crimson highlights. Though dark, the beer shows great clarity with an onyx-like sheen, just as the redish hues plays through the saturated brown color. Its light and delicate creme floats atop the beer and decorates the snifter with lacy rings that delights the eye.

Strong coffee overtones leap onto the olfactory senses along with roasted walnut, heavy toast, and firey burnt embers. Yielding shy of smoke, the scent instead, introduces complementary aromas of caramel, cherry, vanilla, coconut, and unmistakable bourbon alcohols.

And true coffee dominance exudes in the stout's taste as well. Even thought the strong ale proclaims bourbon- its the taste of Columbian coffee, walnut, and bittersweet smoky chocolate that form first impressions. The malty underpinnings of thin caramel sweetness and starchy light whipping cream emerges at middle palate and braces the palate from the dry toast and roast of grain. And all this succulent taste is wrapped in a cocoon of bourbon sweetness with all its gentlemanly oak, tannin, and char.

Medium-full in texture, the stout's mouthfeel resides on a dry-roast backbone that evokes an, arid, powdery, and light ash that extends beyond that of receding malt sweetness and thin bourbon warmth. At eight percent alcohol, the palate easily underestimates the strength as the warmth is calming and succulently inviting. It's a much more drinkable beer than it should be.

Sure to appease the sweet tooth in all of us, Kentucky Bourbon Barrel Stout is indeed a stout at heart. But much like that of their Bourbon Barrel Ale, the beer doesn't simple add nuances of bourbon in complement, it changes the beer into something else- one with much more bourbon influence than is common for such bold technique. The advantages of living in the Bluegrass are many and this new stout is one.

12oz bottle into a snifter.

Pours jet black with a thin tan head. A decent sized ring is left around the edge of the glass on top of the beer.

Coffee is very prominent on the aroma with a lot of roast and caramel along with a healthy dose of chocolate which surprised me a little bit. A somewhat subdued vanilla not but I can't really detect much bourbon. Nonetheless a very inviting aroma.

The flavor has lots of coffee and caramel up front but not in as strong of dose as is present in the aroma. Almost no bourbon at all but rather vanilla, chocolate and caramel. All of the flavors are a little bit thin but they work well together. Roast and char lingers long after the other flavors have cleared up. Mouthfeel is quite thin for the style with a light bitterness and a lingering stickiness.

Overall, a good coffee stout but not on par with Founders Breakfast Stout and roughly the same price. If this becomes available in TN I will gladly pick it up because of no alternatives. In other parts of the country, however, there are better alternatives.

12 ounce bottle stamped with 021813 on it, I assume that's the best by date. Served in a DFH snifter, the beer pours dark brown/black with about an inch tan head that didn't stay around for too long. There's a good amount of lacing. The aroma is nice, it smells like coffee, roasted malt, caramel, and some light vanilla and bourbon. Taste is similar to the aroma, the brew tastes like roasted malt, coffee, bittersweet chocolate, caramel, and some vanilla and bourbon. I'd guess this wasn't aged in bourbon barrels for a long time as the bourbon character in both the aroma and taste is subtle. There is a nice balance between the sweet and bitter flavors, but it does lean towards being sweeter. Mouthfeel/body is medium, it's creamy and a bit slick with moderate carbonation. I think it's a good enough overall brew, but a bit pricey at $12.99 a 4-pack. Definitely worth a try!
