Very Good
BLK WLFBLK WLF
Notes: Black wolves were once thought to be their own unique species. Then a smart person declared them variants of red wolves. Until an even smarter person determined they're actually a gray wolf. Our very own BLK WLF perpetuates the confusion. Dry like an Irish stout. Hoppy like an American stout. Nutty like an oatmeal stout. Creamy like a milk stout. What really is a black wolf?

Having on tap at the Coalition. It is bright dark brown with a thin tan cap. It has a mild coffee and chocolate aroma joined by medium roast malts and a trace of fruit. Hop aromas are low. It has mildly sweet chocolate and coffee flavors balanced by some roast and hop bitterness. There are no harsh or burnt roast flavors. The beer is well balanced, easy to drink and repeatable.

i like this kind of thing, and its good to try something else from these guys, its been awhile. this is a cool style, a real low alcohol but high flavor black ale, stout-esque in color and roastiness, but drinkable more like a dry brown, surprisingly good body for its lightness of drinkability, and more hoppy than expected too, this is kind of a little bit of everything in a style that can use a little shake up in my opinion. nice head on it from the faucet, good shine, some lace as i sip it down. smells like light smoke, raw cocoa, and english crystal malt. im trying to make sense of this when i taste it, piney hops that should be bitter but arent, roastiness thats bold but doesnt cover up the lighter malts in the middle of this, and with a silky feeling that is flattered by the lighter carbonation. there is an organic sort of earthiness about it thats really appealing to me, and i could drink a bunch of these. nice with wood fired pizza that has some char on the crust. it warms up great too. a little confusing, but also real cohesive. fun beer, props for doing something different.

Aroma is fairly strong roasted malts with hints of chocolate. Short tan head, leaving thick, creamy lacing, but receding quickly. Deep dark to black color with just a ring of ruby reflecting off the bottom of the glass. Mouthfeel is smooth but thin. Initial taste is roasty with plenty of flavors... chocolate and roasted coffee. The middle and finish has some bittering begin to assert, and to remain well into the aftertaste. Very flavorful, nice aroma. Amazing job by Able to pack that much flavor into a beer with such a low ABV. Only the thin body betrays the low ABV.

12 oz can with no date. Packs a lot for the senses for a little beer. Nice roasted and chocolate aromas and flavors. Hops give some herbal and grassy notes. Feels a lot bigger than the ABV warrants. I am impressed that a brewery would take a chance on a beer like this and then deliver a fine beer.

Poured on tap into shaker pint glass.
A: Pours a nice dark black with thick tan head with good retention which leaves nice lacing too.
S: Roasted malt, dry chocolate, light roast coffee, and a hint of vanilla.
T: Dry chocolate, light roast coffee with cream, charred wood, and a hint of leather. Let this warm a bit for full enjoyment.
M: Light body. Dry and mildly bitter throughout. Hint of dark and creamy sweetness.
D: A very nice example of style. Excellent sessionability.

12oz can. Poured out an opaque, jet-black color with a small, brown head of foam. It smelled of roasted oats, coffee and chocolate. Strong roasty flavor with chocolate and coffee in the background. Impressively strong taste for such a low ABV stout.

Had this on tap at the Taproom. Nitro pour in a snifter. Looks amazing with a super creamy light cocoa brown head with good retention. Jet black in color. Unfortunately, for me beyond that it didn't do much. Mild notes of chocolate, coffee, and roasted malts on the nose and palate, but nose was minimal and flavor depth was lacking for me. Tasted like it was a decent stout, but extremely watered down. I guess you can't expect much from a 3.7% ABV, but I could see how this would be nice for someone wanting to session a stout. Super thin and not really stout-like in mouthfeel IMO. Overall, it was okay for its ABV and purpose, but I'd rather just drink less and have a big stout with all those attributes fulfilled.

Overall a great brew at this ABV. Amazing depth of flavor and mouthfeel for 3.7%. A good option for stout lovers that want to put a few back on a night out. Deep, opaque brew, off-white head settles to smooth ring around the glass. Roasted malts, bitter chocolate. Smooth and silky mouthfeel coats the tongue a bit.

This beer is something else. I have never experienced such a full flavor from a beer that has such a low ABV. They are not masking anything with heavy malt additions, instead they're blending a variety of different stout styles into one and succeeding with a beautiful low ABV stout that can appeal to anyone that enters the seedhouse. Exceptional work.

This beer arrives a clean black color. The head is minimal with no lacing. The aroma is of coffee,.dark chocolate, hints of burnt malt, and is quite powerful. The taste is similar in both profile and strength. The mouthfeel is lighter bodied than I woud like with a thin texture. Overall, this is a really nice sessinable stout. The mouthfeel could use some tweeking, but the base beer is there.
