From backlog. 12oz bottle, April 2015.

Very "basic" stout, generic dark malts and a little roastiness. Relatively thin. Tastes better while looking out at the beautiful, blue Belizean water.

Trying to live up to its name, has improved, the dark, lingering taste is good enough.

Not a bad beer on vacation and the extra 2% is good.

The only stout I could find in Central America.

Belikin Stout is one of those beers we'd call "dark-ish". Its colour may not be light per se but its appearance is still considerably bright; glowing cherrywood highlights lite up and reveal a pretty high degree of clarity in this brown coloured beer. The surface is flat - not surprising considering this bottle failed to register even a simple 'hiss' upon opening.

As the Foreign Export Stout style often prescribes, the aroma bears a remarkable resemblance to a malt-based chocolate - if, like me, you're the type to chose Maltesers over popcorn at the movie theater concessions it's a safe bet you'll enjoy this style. There's also a light brush of general roastiness that's familiar to stouts of all stripes.

Belikin Stout has very eccentric tasting notes that include molasses, black licorice, root beer, plum jam, and maybe just a drop of coffee. I wouldn't go so sweet as to say 'dried fruits' but this bottle's slight oxidization does give the flavour a raisin-y note. The lack of carbonation is a bit disconcerting but this profile is terribly interesting.

The presence of lactose is not as felt as it can be with some Caribbean stouts; this texture falls more in the realm of syrupy (like blackstrap molasses) as opposed to creamy, and the finish is marked by a coffee-like roastiness. There's also no alcohol presence whatsoever despite the relatively sizable 6.5%. This is definitely not the kind of dark beer to scare people away.

Belikin Stout has a good deal to offer but unfortunately true satiation is not among those things. Though a pretty good representation of the export stout style, it lacks the body and backbone and, as result, comes across as too wispy or, though it's not a term I like to use, 'watered-down' even. But hey, nice to see this option alongside the lager.
