Picked this up at a great little beer store in Arlon, Miorge Mihoublon. This is the oak barrel aged version of the Dalva Double IPA. Slightly hazy amber-orange pour with a two finger creamy white head with great retention and lacing. Unique perfumey, soapy, floral nose with hints of citrus, belgian yeast, white pepper, lemon, and wood. The taste mirrors the nose with lots of unique floral, perfumey notes along with a tangy sourness. Also getting hints of soap, yeast, lemon, and a subtle caramel malt sweetness. Really wish I would have tasted the base Dalva prior to this BA version. Unfortunately, I didn't really detect a whole lot of evidence of the barrel aging, but the taste was so unique that it may have been due to the barrel. Light bodied with medium carbonation with a slightly fizzy, dry, bitter finish. Overall, this is a very unique beer. It was great when it came to the nose, but not sure it translated to a positive with the taste. I'll definitely try the base Dalva and see how it compares.

Revisited this beer two years after my first review and man, what a difference. This is apparently the same beer, just a new bottling with a much longer stay in the barrels. The nose and appearance are pretty much unchanged, with that same unique, perfumy profile. The taste however is much different. Huge oaky notes dominate along with a unique tart, vinous character with hints of lemon, barnyard, lime zest, caramel, white pepper, and apple. The mouthfeel is tart and sour with a dry, mouth-puckering finish. Overall, the added time in the barrel has done wonders for this beer! Definitely wouldn't call it an IPA, but one hell of a sour farmhouse! Highly recommended!

Bought at La Cave à Bulles, this was one of my favorite French beers this past June. My bottle was a 2012 Dalva aged in oak barrels and as others mentioned it tastes more like a saison than a DIPA. Nice fruity nose, oak is present and low carbonation. Didn't feel like an 8.5% beer.
Get it if you can!

Bottle (2012) given to me by the shop owner at La Cave a Bulles in France. What a guy. Notes this was one of his favorite French beers and more of a sour or saison than the DIPA label would imply. Pours hazy golden with a big fluffy white head and lots of lacing left. Funky saison aroma, bready malts, spices, barnyard funk, tart notes, floral aromas. Really nice and I’m thinking saison style before even taking a sip. Flavor is strong sharp acidic sourness on the back of the throat, some fruity elements, peppery spice, lingering oaky funk left on the palate. Lacking a bit in flavor that I expected from the really nice nose. Light to medium body with medium carbonation. Nothing DIPA about this that’s for sure, but did not expect that anyway. Not super exciting, but unique brew and fun to try. Always appreciate the gesture like that.

Poured from a 750 ml bottle into Bruery tulip.

A- pours a hazy, rusty orange. A solid finger and a half creamy white head forms on top. Some nice retention. Hangs on for a while.

S- huge tropical fruits. Pineapple, mango up front. Granny Smith apples, lemon/lime zest follow, and then is finished off with some floral sweetness that compliments earlier flavors so well. Detecting some lanolin which I suspect is coming from the barrel. This old world oak really works well here.

T- I'm getting the apples and lime zest...but then I start picking up some herbs, like dill, basil, and parsley. It's finishing off with a nice sourdough breadiness. This is a wonderfully layered beer! Nothing overpowering anything else.

M- medium thickness, medium carbonation.

O- best barrel aged DIPA ever!!! Huge thanks to Simon at La Cave a Bulles, in Paris for the recommendation. This beer was an absolute pleasure to experience!

From 07/13/13 notes. Picked this up in Paris, France at La Cave de Bulles. 750ml bottle. 2012 vintage.

a - Pours a hazy golden orange color with two fingers plus of fluffy white head and moderate carbonation evident. Lots of head retention and lacing.

s - Smells of floral notes, light citrus hops, sour fruitsm yeast, spices, grain, wheat, earthy notes, must, and some light wood. Hops are light and lots of earthy notes in the nose.

t - Tastes of sour lighter fruits, lemon, citrus, floral hops, spice, pepper, bread, grain, yeast, and earthy malts. More sour fruit than the nose, though again, not super sour. Better than the nose.

m - Medium body and low to moderate carbonation. Very easy to drink and doesn't feel like 8.5% ABV.

o - Overall an interesting beer and as promised by Simon, not really a DIPA and more like a sour/wild ale. The taste especially shows sour notes, and it is very easy to drink. A cool beer worth checking out.
