Brasserie Thiriez is in the NE of France. A beautiful old rambling collection of farm buildings in the French countryside that housed a Brewery until 1945. Reopened in 1996. Steep red wooden tiled roofs & brickwalls painted with peeling whitewash on the outside, just add to its rustic charm.

Inside the Café Bar, which doubles as a sampling room for Brewery Visits, you are whisked back in time to a pre-war “brewery-rich” Northern France. A bare brick cavern, absolutely festooned with old Breweriana. The Café is a single room that can hold about 40 people. Set inside an old barn, Beer Towels adorn the old wooden beams whilst real hop vines hang from them. The walls are just covered in French Breweriana, everything from old bottle labels, posters, cardboard adverts, wooden pub signs, enameled brewery signs, old wooden brewery crates, some with their original old brown stoppered bottles - it's more like a Museum. Two large vertical glass wooden signs for Jupiler, both in great condition & genuine originals, are the most striking & immediately greet you on the opposite wall as you walk in; One is for “Piedbœuf – Jupiler Urtyp”; one for “Piedbœuf – Jupiler 5”. Long disappeared beers, from a bygone era. The old wooden tables & chairs are regimentally organized; many of the tables have old wooden traditional pub games on them.

The bar is just to your left as you walk into the Café. A small one person affair that looks like it was taken from an older establishment. It is painted lime green & resembles a piece of furniture rather than a bar. Two stainless steel taps usually dispense the Blonde & Brune. Other bottled beers from Thiriez are also on sale, as is other locally produced fare & some French beer books.

The Brewery & Bottling Plant is located in the two buildings adjacent to the Café. It is a modern, all-stainless steel affair, custom designed by Velo of Italy & installed by J.Legendre of Belgium; it has a capacity of 600 litres. Fully automated, in addition to producing 4 of their own regular beers, the specialty of the brewery is to produce short runs of beers for special events & festivals. Groups tell the brewer what style beer they want & how much, & he will brew, bottle with a special label & deliver.

We were pushed for time, as we had a Ferry to catch, so we tried only the Brune, Blonde & Rousse, all were well above average. But it was the excellent collection of old French Breweriana that really left a lasting impression on me.

Visited Brasserie Thiriez in April of 2008 with the Burgundian Babble Belt on a Bier-Mania bus tour.

The gorgeous sun we got that day made this artisanale brewery really shine. We only had enough time to try the Esquelbecq Blonde and Amber. The inside of the "bar" has wooden tables with a very cool coin game on ours. The ceiling was littered with beer towels, new and old. Wooden crates from Thiriez and other breweries were al throughout the room. I met Daniel, the brew master, and he was a very nice guy, he was happy to give me a few extra coasters to take home.

If by chance in French Flanders this is definitely a nice spot to have a beer. If you are a fan of true French Artisinal beer, try to acquire some Thiriez brews.
