Mid. 2011 Review: 25 cl. draft @ Stone vs. Moeder event: dark amber-red with a small head, smells like spicy hop, slight yeast & spices, taste is hot chilli’s mixed bitter grapefruit hops, bitter hop first with a very hot aftertaste, light yeast with a light but clearly present caramel malt backbone, some pepper & spices first as well, the Chipotle hasn’t burned away all of the underlying beer’s taste yet, not as mouth-numbingly spicy as Crime - too bad :)

On tap at Congregation Ale House in Pasadena, CA.
2010 vintage.
Pours a murky orange-brown with a foamy tan head that settles to a small cap on top of the beer. Thin foamy rings of lace line the glass on the drink down. Smell is of malt, caramel, yeast, and pepper aromas. Taste is much the same with a mild pepper heat on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp and medium bodied mouthfeel. Overall, this is a good beer with some nice aromas and flavors.

'10 Double Bastard with Chipotles could only have happened at Bittercreek's Stone Tap Takeover!! Dave and Erin were very cool .. Nicely done.
The brew is deep amber with a decent head... nose is smokey and lightly firey.. good maltiness helps carry the chilies... surprising how much hoppiness and base beer is left to make good on the aromas.
Flavor is fantastic... caramel and pungent/graperfruit hops are stopped in the tracks by a dry smokey chili essence... the heat is very bearable and adds huge complexity.. loving this one.. the ABV is hidden nicely.. the malt and chipotle flavor are great together.
This is a great beer... I was surprised how much I enjoyed it.. Very well done.

A - appearance was good. Nice carbonation that lasted with some lacing.
S - Hops pretty good. Could not smell peppers or Cinnamon, which the Stone rep. said was in the beer. No one drinking it pick up the Cinnamon.
T - taste was nice. No alcohol taste, well blended hop and malt balance. The pepper was laid back, no real bite. You could taste the pepper effects similar to other strong tastes on the back of the tongue.
M - Good mouth feel.
O - I'll admit I am not a hop fan. This specialty beer is not for me, but nice for the style.
