Bottle share courtesy of Rich. Big rich wooden notes abound, smoky, caramel, stinging palate. Sip, savor and enjoy.All the best Double Bastard has to offer, enriched with some nice barrel aging. Tasty.

500 mL bottle poured into a snifter. 2009 Double Bastard aged in Bourbon Barrels. Reviewed from notes.

Appearance - Deep amber with an off-white head and nice surface bubbles.

Smell - Incredible bourbon and oak barrel notes. No booze, but also not much of the base beer on the nose.

Taste - Bourbon, vanilla, and oak. Caramel malt. Still has quite the hop presence of Double Bastard. Bitter and oaky finish.

Mouthfeel - Not boozy. Not very thick, either. Oak and hops make the finish a little harsh.

Overall - Loads of vanilla. Excellent barrel flavors. I never would have thought the base beer a good candidate for barreling, but this worked out nicely.

500ml bottle poured into a Jack's Abby snifter. Brewed in '09 and bottled in '12, part of the QM series. Thanks Tom (airfoil) for the bottle!

A- Pours a dark brown that has some translucency but for the most part is fairly opaque. Just a very thin head forms that recedes to a flat top, fairly minimal carbonation.

S- Balanced bourbon, dark fruits, raisins, figs, caramel, oak. Nice subtle complexeties, could be more aromatic though.

T- Light bourbon, sticky caramel, slight sweet cherry with just a very faint tartness. Decent overall but I'd like the bourbon to come out more and the flavors to be intensified in general- it's a little bit duller then I'd like.

M- Medium bodied to a little bit on the thicker side, coats the palate with a nice stickiness, not much carbonation but I'm fine with that, very drinkable.

O- This was a decent beer however I had slightly higher expectations for it. The bourbon was very subtle however it did do a good job at balancing the other flavors out. Overall it wasn't as flavorful as I would have liked it to be although it was still very drinkable. This is definitely worth trying however I don't think it is worth the price tag they had on it (don't remember exact price but I think it may have been $20).

Received in a trade a while back. This is the 2009 vintage, 2012 release.

A - Poured into my Duvel tulip a very nice clear super deep garnet/ruby hue with a big light mocha nearly three finger creamy head that fades slowly to leave light and sticky lacing along with a nearly 1 finger blanket. Best 500mL Stone appearance yet.

S - Aromas of rich oak, caramel, raisins, malts, light dark fruits, leather notes along with light alcohol as well. Nice bourbon notes as well, however, somewhere in the middle there is a weird slightly "off" aroma. Not infection off, but almost like a spoiled note.

T - Taste is older hops, lightly bitter, caramel, brown sugar, light bourbon, flashes of vanilla. Finish is awfully sweet with dark fruit notes as well. Not quite cloy but close. The oddity in the nose does not appear in the taste, though even with that oddity in the nose the nose is still better than this tastes.

M - Mouthfeel is pretty good, lighter carbonation but still pretty easy drinking.

O - Overall, let down again by a Stone 500mL. Really not worth the effort on these, quite unfortunate, especially considering how good the appearance was.

2010 version on-tap at Stone in Escondido. Reviewed from notes taken last week.

A- Amber bodied pour into 8oz tasting mini-pint glass. Small white head forms but falls fairly quickly to a thin ring around the edges of the beer. Just a few spots of lace.

S- Aged Double Bastard comes through nicely, having had it many times, with dusty musty caramel and spiced raisins, it feels more like an Old Ale now, a good one however. The barrel contributes hints of faint vanilla bourbon and some oak wood.

T- Mimics the aroma closely but more of the barrel coming through here. Dusty aged caramel and raisin oxidation with some sweetness complimented by a medium-strength bourbon barrel. At this point a great vanilla flavor comes through with a fresh oak woody feel and some whiskey in the end.

MF- Moderately heavy body with a medium level of carbonation and a nice creamy texture. Some warmth from the alcohol but it works well here.

Aged Double Bastard and the right kind of Bourbon barrel usage come together here to create something special. The flavors from each are complimentary and this is one I could sip on for hours.

2010 edition (edition might not be the right word here, but hey, what can I do?)

Served on tap to a 10/12 oz cup, nothing special (except the beer).

All that I do not like in Double Bastard is gone here, and what I like in Double Bastard is still here, multiplied.

A: Dark brown/redish, cloudy, with a thin head that dissipates quickly leaving almost no lacing.

S: malt, malt, malt, sweet awesome malty beer. Vanilla, bourbon, dark fruit, more malt, more booze, sweet goodness. Some hops somewhere, paying a lot of attention. Those super obvious hops in double bastard are almost gone here.

T: slight bitterness from the almost disappeared hops up front, and then it hits you all at once. Similar to the aroma. Tons of malt, vanilla, bourbon, fruits, sweetness, dark sugars, back to vanilla. Super complex beer. Amazing!

M: thick as expected, low carbonation, full body. Feels good and warm in the mouth.

O: A-W-E-S-O-M-E

I'm so looking forward to going to San Diego and our reservation in the Stone Bistro next weekend!

Reviewing the Bourbon Barrel Aged 2009 Double Bastard Ale from the Quingenti Millitre Series from Stone Brewing Company out of Escondido, California.

Score: 82

Bottle is from the June 2012 release. Served in a snifter glass and enjoyed on 01/31/13.

Appearance: Chestnut brown in color with a finger of fizzy beige head that gradually settles to a thin layer atop the glass. Has a very traditional old ale look, but with a lot more head than expected off the pour. Good lacing and retention. Some serious floaties settle onto the bottom half of the glass. 3/5

Smell: Caramel, molasses, fig, sweet raisin, and sweet, faintly desserty, oaky vanilla. Lots of malt with a dark fruit twist. Bourbon complexities are very noticeable on the nose. Faint milk chocolate in the background. Some “leather belt” smell towards the end of a whiff too. Light alcohol esters present. There is a little brown sugar and a “fizziness” in the nose as the beer warms up. 4.25/5

Taste: Lots of caramel, then lesser quantums of brown sugar and fizzy vanilla. Finish is oddly bitter. There is some dark fruit too. 3.5/5

Mouthfeel: Too thin and over-carbonated. Dry, and slightly bitter on finish. 1.5/5

Overall: Although the nose was promising, the favors are too light, less complex and the mouthfeel kills the beer. Skip this one.

Cost: $20 for a 500 ml bottle.

Had it on tap at Mew's Tavern in Wakefield, RI for my birthday. It was a bit hoppy for my taste, however, it was a good beer. It started strong with hops, the middle was a mix of malts, and the finish was a bit spicy. All in all I would have it again.

Pours ruddy red and slightly cloudy. A small head quickly recedes. Lots of pineapple on the nose. Taste balances toasted malts, more pineapple, and strong hop bitterness. Really surprised how much pineapple there is in this, which I don't remember from standard Double Bastard. Finishes very dry and bitter with respectable carbonation.

Copper in color with a small off-white head. Huge booze/bourbon aroma on this. Lots of dark fruit, wood, vanilla, and sugar aromas as well. But mostly booze. Things are a touch more mellow on the palate, but still fairly heavy on the bourbon. Lots of vanilla, dark fruit, nuts, and brown sugar and caramel. Really an intense aroma and flavor to this, hopefully it mellows out a bit.

2009 vintage.

Pours a clear dark brown with a foamy khaki head that settles to a film on top of the beer. Small dots of lace slowly drip into the remaining beer on the drink down. Smell is of malt, brown sugar, caramel, bourbon, wood, and vanilla. Taste is much the same with an alcohol kick and a slight hop flavor on the finish. There is a fairly mild bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp and medium bodied mouthfeel. Overall, this is a good beer that is tasty and seems to have benefitted from a barrel aging treatment.

This is the 2009 Quingenti Millitre Bourbon double bastard 500 ml released 6/12

Something about Stone db - I rarely enjoy it fresh, but put a couple of years under its belt and WOW. So I knew the key to this one for me would be how well the bourbon aging meshed with those super strong malt characteristics they brew into this beer.

As it turned out with BA db, the bourbon/malt flavor blend is excellent, and when the alcohol fades just a bit more in another 6-12 months, this one will be killer.

Poured into a snifter amber/dark with a thinnish head. Warm aromas of bourbon, bit of hops and maltiness present.

The bourbon is medium strong - read slight alcohol burn - but I'd say in another year will be toned down perfectly. Circling July 4 on the calendar for my 2nd bottle. For now, it's still very tasty; the sweetness of the bourbon blending very well with the extra malty punch they brew into a slight dark fruitiness that I associate with barleywines. After I swallowed and let the initial taste melt in my mouth, the secondary flavors, vanilla, toffee, caramel, lingered nicely.

Can't wait till next year to open that other bottle.

Big thanks for sharing.

A: Deep red with a big beige head.

S: Prominent caramel and bready notes blend with pine, earth, and some citrus. Strong bourbon with lots of booze and a little vanilla.

T: Big and boozy with big bourbon notes. Again, very boozy. Lots of oak and caramel with an insistent bitterness. It's piney with some grapefruit. Tastes like 15% ABV.

M: Upper medium body with upper medium carbonation.

Overall: Solid but the alcohol is stinging. At $25 I'd definitely pass on this.

Thanks to Smarcoly for opening this one

App- Pours out like a brandy meets a bourbon. A bit of a brown, gold, red mixture in the glass. A bit thinner than a normal double bastard. A small one finger quick receding head was there and gone. Nice lacing on the glass with a little bit of swirl on top.

Smell- Really was a nice smelling beer, but seemed a bit lacking in the bourbon department. More sweet than I expected. A good solid malt base with just touches of bourbon and vanilla to compliment the base beer.

Taste- It was nice. It was a smaller version than I was hoping was going to come out and be on par with BART. The barrel added some flavors but just too little for me. A bit sweeter on the flavor profile as was the case with the nose. A touch of vanilla added to the layering but needed more punch from the bourbon.

Mouth- A bit of a thinner medium body with a thinner medium carbonation. Semi creamy with a good residual sweet flavor. A little bourbon, a little vanilla. Much more malts.

Drink- Tasty, well crafted, layered, but...I wanted more. A bit too thin and lacking in certain aspects of this one. I'd love another bottle to sit on but probably wont happen.
