Smell isn't great, taste is better. Not much spice to it. Flavor goes away quickly. Not one of their best brews, could be at the bottom. Expected more heat from the chili.

12 oz. can poured into pilsener
(no born-on dating; 5.5% ABV printed on can)

L: dark amber, almost red, clear; pushes up small head of beige foam, no more than 1/3-inch tall; keeps a collar of beige foam and half a skin on top; no sticking or lacing; activity in the glass continues a good 1/4 into it, nothing crazy but it's nice to see a little lager column of bubbles in the glass

S: sour grain, toasted grain, sour corn ... as it warms, the malt profile really shines -- buttery honeyed biscuits, donuts almost, and even a bit of fruity peach or apricot like an English pale, and now there's some candied orange; sweet malt aroma has just a pinch of earthy backing from the noble hops ... very subtle

T: toasted grain, earthy dirt bite of hops ... slightly medicinal cold, but that could be from some earthy hops; aftertaste is burnt/bitter grain and dirt; as it warms, it seems clear the noble hops are creating a lot of that earthy bitter bite -- it's a tame bite but a lingering one that leaves the earthy flavor on your tongue well into the aftertaste;

F: relatively crisp and light with a good full feel from the carbonation; nothing fancy but nothing wrong with it, either

O: not a bad little beer at all and a definite hook for Blackwater Draw to try to entice the macro-beer drinker; the opening act is a bit medicinal, but there's some good toasted malt in this beer -- it requires more warming up than I prefer before it starts to show in the flavor; it is a highlight in the aroma
