Type: 12-oz. can
Glass: Manzanita pint glass
From: Trader Joe’s in Hillcrest (San Diego), Calif.
Price: $3.49 for a 6-pack
Purchased: June 19, 2013
Consumed: June 21, 2013
Misc.: N/A

Poured a golden semi-murky color with 1-2 fingers of offwhite head that parted pretty quickly. Lots of bubbles coming up from the bottom. Minimal-to-no lacing. Bad retention on the top.

Smelled a lot of different flavors, reminding me somewhat of a lager, hefeweizen, Belgian ale and a blonde. Got faint banana, sour fruit, honey, grass, ashtray, bread lemon and corn with a heavy alcohol backbone.

Tasted honey, corn, lemon grass, faint banana cloves, tropical notes, cereal and faint smoky ashtray. Somehow it all worked together.

Light body. Thin texture. Soft carbonation. Abrupt, watery finish.

Not bad lager. Not a great one, but such a great value ($0.58 per beer). I’d probably have it again (after this 6-pack).

From BeerAdvocate Magazine Volume III, Issue II:

Canned beer still has too many myths tied around it: Sure, craft brewers are canning, but the typical lager in a can has been shunned by the new emerging beer snob.

Crystal-clear golden color, decent enough head retention to last the duration of this session. Not much to the aroma; very clean with only a hint of cereal. Very crisp and light bodied. Right off, the crispness is in the hop bitterness, which aims all of its sharpness at the malt. The malt comes off grainy but clean; grassy with a hint of animal feed grain and cereal grain. Faintly nutty and husky; clean and dry palate throughout. Small breath of alcohol. Dry almost all the way with a linger of the alcohol and cereal grain on the tongue.

Pedestrian? Sure, but that is what the style calls for, and where Minhas lands with its beer. Good balance, and just enough in the aftertaste to know you want more. We dig this beer. Even though it's 6.2-percent ABV, we'll tag it as a session lager LOL. We envision a pitcher of this beer and a plate of chili-filled nachos grande.

Give this a try. This is significantly different than Budwiser, miller, coors, etc.. It has a pleasant honey like sweetness and tanginess that makes it really good. I think this is my new go-to.

I like the Simpler Times Lager because it's exactly what it says. Sorry this is my first review so I'm not going to get into details. It is a cheap drinkable beer. Perfect for when you just need to unwind after a hard day or work and don't want to spend $12 for a damn 6 pack.

Biggest con is feeling light and watery, though it does have some nice carbonation. Pros are the bright gold color, unsalted pretzel flavor, and super low cost.

Absolutely brilliant. Simpler Times Lager is like a unicorn. It's smooth, it tastes great, it has an abv of 6.2, and a six pack costs only $3.00! Are you kidding me? Even the ass water they call bud light goes for $6.00 per six pack. There is no other beer like it and I would absolutely choose it over most craft beers that cost 4 times as much. I love a good craft beer, but at 50 cents a pop this is a winner.

I had seen this at Trader Joe's and for some reason didn't buy it ($2.99 for a six pack) until today. Wow was I surprised. It's sold warm so you've gotta chill it but that's okay. Very good lager with a nice overall taste and no aftertaste to speak of. The 6.2% ABV is also an added plus. If you have a Trader Joe's in your area I would seriously consider getting this.

smell has a sweetness to it. carbonation is nice when it hits the tongue. almost an apple taste to it...with bubbles. it is rather satisfying on a hot day. 6.2 abv sneaks up on you after 3 of them. this beer is not a bad bargain at 3.99 a sixer, well worth it. much better than the 5.99-6.99 alternatives.

All the guys at the shop indulge in the "King". I can't drink that shhit for many reasons, and my bottles of torpedo make me look all hotie-totie. So i had to find a beer I can tolorate in the can...

Looks like piss on the pour. Piss with foam.
Smells like piss. Piss with well...
Taste is much better than all the BMC offerings. So at 2.99 a six I've got a keeper here. This beer reminds me of when I was a kid at stater bros. and saw a guy with a six pack that had a brown label on the can and just said "beer" in black lower case letters. I'd kill to find a can of that...oh wait, I have

I quite like this for what it is. Much better than basic macro lagers. Grassy mild smell. Taste is predominantly a sweet grassiness, a little bit of citrus, and a mild kick of hops. Overall a sweet light brew, good for summer drinking. Not the best by far, mind you, but sold at a great price point at TJ's.

Wasn't impressed with the appearance and aroma, not much to either, yellow, faint.

Taste, a little reminiscient of Weinhard's, which ain't a bad thing. Kinda plain. Minimal hops, minimal malt. This is a plain beer, not bad, just, well simpler times I guess.

It's real drinkable, its pretty cheap and there's nothing to like or dislike.

Surprisingly good budget priced beer.

I generally drink local craft brews but was in Trader Joes browsing their beer collection when a guy rolled a buggy up and loaded two cases of this stuff. It wasn't much of a gamble at the price so I grabbed a six pack for myself.

I confess i drank it straight from the can so i did not look at the color or stick my nose in the can to experience the fragrance, however. I got a decent one beer buzz so it did its job.

Nice post work unwind beverage that would probly be good after cutting the grass this weekend. I confess I might not drink more than one in a sitting but I will buy a second six pack on Friday and let you know.

Snagged this one from my buddy's fridge. Drank it straight from the can. Smell was faint, a little grainy. Taste was pretty decent. Better than I was expecting. Very smooth drinking light bodied beer. Surprised it was 6.2%. This isn't the best beer ever, but it's definitely worth the money.

Appearance - Pours a semi-clear, golden hay color with a white, 2 finger head. Average retention. Spotty lacing.

Smell - Sweet and fruity; tart apple and sugar, mostly. Hints of grain and, buried deep, the faintest note of alcohol.

Taste - A jumbled mess of malt and sugar; subtle, faded green apple candy character. Faint hints of grain. Virtually no hops to speak of.

Mouthfeel - Medium bodied and sticky. Moderate carbonation. Where's the light, clean crispness of a lager?

Overall - Minhas delivers another malt liquor in disguise, this time as a lager. I didn't expect much out of a beer that costs roughly 60 cents per can, so I can't say I'm disappointed, only that I got what I paid for. Maybe a decent beer with which to play beer pong?

Well-filtered straw-golden in color, with a head that looks like the first snow of the season--ultra-white and loosely packed. It stays fluffy for quite awhile, thanks to the multitude of never ending bubbles feeding it.

Aroma-wise this leans on the sweet side of things; flowery; lemon water; Corn Pops cereal. Clean and, well, simple...just like the can says. Thankfully, there's nothing wretched happening, as with so many others in the category.

There's a sweet fruity taste at the front of the sip, reminding of a juicy pear, but it yields quickly to a crisper, more bitter hops character, along with a lightly tart lemon-ness. Bready/grainy, like fresh-baked white bread. Mildly astringent bitterness lingers in the finish. Also some Juicy Fruit brand gum in the finish, which I also detected in their Red Oval lager yesterday. Hmm...

Mouthfeel is creamier than expected, balancing a round, slippery texture with the tickling bubbles.

What can you say about a brewery that currently has seven "Amercian Adjunct Lager"s in rotation...and 4 malt liquors!? Lots of negative stuff, surely, but you have to admire their commitment. And this is surprisingly decent stuff, easy to drink, if entirely lacking in depth, and without any kind of walloping flavor. There is room in the world for this kind of thing after all...

[thanks to bruthaman mnwags for this!]

12oz can poured into a pint.

A- Pale yellow with heavy foamy head.

S- Awful. This is easily the worst beer I have ever had. Smells like weak pancake batter mixed with windex and cheap high alcohol wine.

T- Unbearable. Very skunky flavor with no malt character. The windex taste is overpowering. Im amazed anyone could finish a six pack.

M- Well carbonated but somehow feels chalky.

D- undrinkable

12oz can with retro style

App: pure gold/dark straw with a frothy white head. perfect clarity

smell: sweet corn, a touch of honey an flowers

Taste: general malty sweetness. indistinguishable but pleasant. crisp clean aftertaste associated with corn adjuncts.

crisp mouthfeel with a bit of corny film

Highly drinkable, but the 6.5% might be hefty

A great beer for 67 cents a can. A good example of a well done american adjunct lager

12oz can, Sam Adams perfect pint, no clear freshness date.

The bone white froth is very pretty on top of a yellow a shade or two darker than you get from most AALs. Retention is also better than most.

Primarily the aroma is sweet graininess with possibly a touch of sugarcane. There may be some alcohol developing as it gets warm, but hey, this is bargain beer and the kind you drink very cold anyway.

And on we go with sweet grains. Assorted cereal grains are very pleasant and there's a firm but kind bitterness. This is all utterly simple. The sweetness is kind of corny and almost too much.

Somehow this isn't fizzy enough. It does most things better than the big boys of fizzy brewing, except out fizz them. Drink it fast to keep it refreshing.

The Simpler Times Pilsner is better and actually has some hops. I wanted to try the lager, and now I know. For the three bucks grab a six of the Pilsner.
