from trader joes. 12oz bottle with no date to be found.

clear, golden straw. decent head, but soon fades to thin layer. some lace here and there.

grassy noble hop with whiff of sulfur. toasted malt and grains, on the bready side.

malt is toasty and relatively balanced with the grassy noble hops, with moderate bitterness. hint of DMS. faint malts peek through the otherwise clean finish.

decently smooth and not too thin, with lively moderate carbonation.

hmm, not too bad. is this really an adjunct lager? other than the DMS note, it actually managed to keep a malt presence.

(NOTE 4/2011- review submitted when still classified as an adjunct lager. as a german pils, the score should be lower. for now, the overall score is being changed from 4.0 to 3.0)

Poured from 12oz brown bottle into a clear stange. Born-on date lasered on neck. Single purchased at Trader Joe's (Richmond, VA) for $0.83.

A: Clear straw yellow with good clarity, fluffy white head with occasional itiny clumps of lace after average retention.

S: Corn and sweet cereal grains with barely any noble hops aromas

T: Tastes breadier and significantly less hoppy than a standard pilsener. Adjunct flavor is pretty prominent. Light metallic off-flavors in the finish.

M: Light-bodied and active carbonation with barely any aftertaste.

D: Not terrible (and certainly better than the Simpler Times Lager), but, even at Trader Joe's, there are better choices.

Picked up at TJ in Arroyo Grande.

Poured a nice golden hue in a 12 oz pils glass. Foam dissipated quite fast, left no lacing. Missing the aroma hops that one may expect from a pilsner. Smells of malt, corn & biscuit. On second pour decent foam, which means my glass may have been not properly cleaned. Still fast dissipation thereafter.

Taste is quite boring. Good carbonation, decent hoppage but certainly not enough to save this. Much too malty for a pilsner - missing that clean, crispness that one might expect. Tastes thin despite labeled 5.5% ABV. as it tastes around 4.5%. This tastes like a macro attempt at pilsner craft beer.

I gues for $4.99 I shouldn't expect any better - I was just hoping that TJs quality standards might help - to no avail. I will try to pawn the rest off on the neighbors - quite dissapointing.

Decent head with little or no lacing. Appeasing clean - golden color. Smells of bread and some other unusual corn. The smell should warn you of the taste. Semi-sweet initial flavor that leaves a bitter aftertaste. Light mouthfeel and a generally flat, under carbonated feel. Would not recommend based on that unusual smell and bitter aftertaste - hard to drink more than one.

Bottle from Trader Joe's - Cincinnati.

Poured clear amber color with an average to large frothy white head that mostly lasted with good lacing. Moderate grass hop and malt aroma. Medium body with soft carbonation. Light to medium sweet flavor with a light to medium bittersweet finish of moderate duration.

Cheap and better of the two Simpler Times.

12 oz bottle from TJ.

Pours a golden color with a small white head that soon fades to a fine film and holds. The Aroma is unremarkable--some faint corn and breads. The taste is much better than the aroma would suggest with a bit of fruit and some good yeasty biscuit emerging and lingering. The mouthfeel is light and crisp, and the finish is short and clean. In conclusion, not a bad little pils at all.

Starts off with a decent off-white head. Dies to a single layer of bubbles and leaves minimal spotty lace. The liquid is crystal clear and straw in color.

Soft aroma of lighter colored malts and gentle hop. More malty than anything else.

Pleasant muted malty flavor. Rather thin body but equally low carbonation. Light hop--not really present in the shortlived aftertaste.

This is drinkable, but barely, and less than ok, with the smell and taste a little off and heavy without corresponding character, so it even lacks the clean, crisp, or refreshing qualities that are some of the strengths of a basic lager or pilsner.

Fairly deep gold, it has a medium white head steadily shrinking to a lasting, wispy foamy top and leaving a little lace. It looks pretty good.

The aroma is fruity grain, musty old apples, grass, a hint of clean sweat and sulphur. It's mostly an ok basic lager smell, but a little unpleasantly funky.

The taste is similar, mostly a decent pale lager with fruity grain plus noticeable hops, mostly grassy. It starts somewhat sweet before a more bitter finish, but it's all a little off. It has an odd, light, faintly acrid, cooked vegetable-old-grass-burnt butter quality that I have encountered in sub-par lagers sometimes, and this taste and the bitterness are a bit rough and faintly unpleasant. However, these qualities do not detract too much and overall it's still basically drinkable. It's not terrible, but it almost is.

A new to me beer from Trader Joe's.

Clear yellow colored beer with a tall white head, what a lager should look like.

Smell is sweet and fruity like a California Steam beer; have to wonder how hot this was fermented. Slightly soapy and herbal hop aroma.

The taste starts out dry and highly fruity in the mouth and once again I wonder how warm this was fermented. Little bit of toffee flavor and a slightly herbal hop aftertaste.

Mouthfeel is OK.

Not completely sure this is superior to the BMC style beers or not. Tastes like it was fermented hot or with sugar to boost alcohol levels. Pretty sure I won't be buying this again.

The second of two new Simpler Times brews to recently arrive at the local Trader Joe's. For the money, this would have to be God awful to not be worth the money. The nose is thin and malty with buttery and grainy notes on top of a golden, heavily carbonated body and a brief cap of head.

Some surprisingly decent hops up front but the malt takes over and can't pick up the slack. The finish is grainy and watery and the aftertaste just kind of withers and dies. Considering how many bubbles are flowing initially, this just doesn't have any bite.

This is barely average but you could do much worse, especially for the price. Nice in a pinch, like the week before payday.

App - Pale gold color, very clear. Pours a suprisingly large white head, creamy and long lasting.

Aroma - a bit buttery (diacetyl?), minimal hop

Flavor - A buttery flavor to match the aroma, no distinct malt flavor. Some subdued hop flavors kick in a bit later, and the finish is slightly bitter but tastes a bit off (some of the butter lingers through the finish)

MF - Medium body and moderate carbonation. No astringency or alcohol warming.

D'ability - Flavor a bit disappointing - the Simpler Times Lager was cheaper and a bit better in my view. Not a clean, refreshing lager.

a: into a pils glass, give a big head with good retention and lacing, the beer is a golden hay in color

s: sweet and grainy pale malt and a lesser amount of pilsner malt, sweet bread, well hopped but they seem to be a bit on the old side, macro pils

m: carbonation on the light end, light-medium body

t: not bad but a bit out of balance towards the malt, malts grainy and husky, hops nondescript and dirty, mild bitterness, not as refined, crisp, and clean as I prefer for the style, some unwelcomes in the finish but nothing terribly off

d: better than the same branded "lager", and relatively easy to drink

single from Trader Joe's Reston
