A - Black bodied stout, no detectable light passing through. A light brown head foaming up when poured, but quickly fading to lace and a few mini islands of bubbles.

S - Nose of mineral water, sweet and metallic. Faint notes of roasted grain and sourdough.

T - A light flavor profile, with some sweet and mild chocolate, hints of roasty malts. Light sweet mineral water, some dry grain.

M - Very light bodied for a stout, its clean and crisp with a mildly dry end. Very drinkable.

O - A drinkable stout, with this light feel and subtle flavors.

Not bad at all for the pricepoint. 2.29 a bomber. Mine was brewed by Rhinelander. The coffee was very prominent with a very smooth roasty bitterness behind it. I actually enjoyed this.

For the cheapest beer in the store, it’s not bad. It can’t compete with the top chocolate stouts out there, but it’s drinkable and tasty enough to make it a bargain for the price.

Picked up at the local Trader Joe's in Omaha a couple of weeks ago for $2.49 for a 22-ounce (650ml) bottle. Bottle chilled down to 34 degrees in my bar refrig and poured into a 16 ounce "STORZ" snifter glass.

Pour was dark brown in color with a smaller off-white head. Lacing was seen with each sip that stuck to the sides of the glass, not a lot but was seen.

Aroma is what would be expected of cocoa powder and roasted malts. Tasty pretty much follows the nose. No bitterness was noted for the aftertaste. Lighter-bodied than many similar style stouts. Overall, a decent brew at a great price. Worth a try if you can find it.

A: Black with a nice light brown foamy head. The head recedes a little too quickly though and completely disappears.

S: Tootsie roll, subtle yeast notes, marzipan, chocolate and a bit of spiciness.

T: Roasted malt, some powdery cocoa powder and a hint of earthy hops on the finish. For me, the taste was a little too one-dimensional and it got old before the bottle was through. Still, at $1.99, this is an absolute steal. Very worth the price.

From a bomber: nearly black color, not much light getting through. Excellent aroma, mostly dark fruit. Taste is mostly toast and dark fruit; the chocolate is subtle. A surprising amount of hops. The feel is thin, despite an excellent and tenacious head of foam. This is a good beer and a really good value but not quite what I would think of as a stout.

I tasted quite a bit more chocolate than many of the reviewers here, but generally concur that it falls short of what a chocolate stout can be. For the price, not bad at all, but quite a few other comparably-priced Trader Joe's offerings surpass it.

A - Dark smoky color. Bit high on the froth, which comes out to a chocolate cream color.

S - Light smell, kind of bland. Can't really smell the sharp chocolate flavor.

T - No distinct flavor. No spices or chocolate taste.

M - Goes down smooth, and has a slight flavor that lingers.

O - Nothing that stands out. Light flavor and light feel.

$2 at Trader Joe's? I couldn't not try it. Poured from bottle into Bruery tulip

Appearance is motor oil black with a little bit of brown at the top. Decent carbonation yields a good head that settles down into a nice ring around the glass

Smell is as it should be. Slight roasted chocolate goodness. There is also just the slightest hint of sweetness

Taste is good. It could use a bit more body, but it's definitely an easy drinker. The chocolate is there, but it's not overwhelming. Sweetness is there as well.

Since this is pretty light bodied, the mouthfeel is great. Goes down clean and smooth.

Overall, for $2 this is a steal. I would absolutely buy this again for that price.

Poured a 1.5" mocha head with average life. The body is deep dark as coffee. Smell is milder than I expected and with roasted malt but not really any chocolate. Then the taste was the opposite with a good amount of dark chocolate but not really any coffee or roasted malt coming forward. Medium body and medium finish. I still fully enjoyed it, and it was ultracheap at Trader Joe's.

Bought at Trader Joe's with a couple other Boatswain bombers. At 2.29 a piece I thought I'd found a steal, now I'm not so sure. Bomber gets split between a traditional pub pint and a snifter. Two fingers of fizzy, active mocha head that quickly folds back into the brew. Some sticky lacing. Tons of carbonation, a ridiculous amount, looks like pop rather than beer.

Smells like booze, some bitter chocolate, Nestle Quik powder mix, and a twinge of regret. Stouts are some of my favorites, so I tend to give them a little more benefit of the doubt. Not this one, not right now.

Mouthfeel is thin, watery. There's a taste of bitter coffee and booze, and not much else. I wanna like it, for 2.29 I really wanna like it. But it's not happening.

It's not offensive, it's just bleh. And that's a terrible thing for a stout to be. This is a stout for people who want to drink something brown, drink a lot of it, and drink it quick. I can't fault it too much because, y'know, 2.29. For a bomber.

Long story short: Inoffensive and cheap stout-like beverage.

Pours opaque dark brown with khaki head that takes a while to settle. Very Guinness-like.
Smell is subtle roast. Cocoa is subtle. Taste is more of the roast malt with earthy ash finish. Flavor tends more to coffee than chocolate.
A little more heavily carbonated and poundable than I wanted from a stout.
Overall great cheap beer and would get it again.
