This has a nice bronze color, but very little head or lacing. It smells too strong, sort of bitter medicine and yeast. It tastes a little better than it smells, with a strange malt and yeasty hops mix. The mouth feel is ok - smooth with a little burst of carbonation. My second of these, poured in a glass was better than the first straight from the can, but it is still probably my least favorite IPA ever tried. Pass on this.

Appearance: Pours a deep amber orange color with a mild white head. SRM of 14 (3.75)

Aroma: Strong orange and medicine aromas. Lots of clove, medicinal aspirin as I have gotten with all of Minhas beers. It's just orange tangerine and aspirin. (3.00)

Flavor: Flavor follows the nose with even more clove and drying medicinal flavors. Resembles Belgian yeast. Orange upfront, but then get walloped up by the medicinal quality. Finishes dry, medicinal, and bitter. (2.00)

Feel: Medium-bodied. Thick and low carbonation. Leaves a medicinal and spice bitterness on the palate. Not very pleasant. (2.00)

Overall: Good God this is a terrible beer. Definitely should not be called an "IPA". All of the beers from this brewery have this orange, medicinal quality and taste the same. This one is just stronger. Not a pleasant flavor. The appearance is the only redeeming quality of this beer. A beer that's ranked #6836 of the American IPA category should not be called an IPA. I think I could stir some hops and malts together and put it in a microwave and get a better product than this. (Final Rating: 2.15)

Clear amber with thin head. Smells of sweet crackery malt with hint of spicy hops. Flavor is similar, kind of toasty. Definitely more malt forward than hop forward. I can't rate this as an AIPA, as it doesn't fit the profile at all. It's more like an english bitter. The bitterness is a strong component of the experience, yet still not very bitter for an IPA. It's dirty and metallic and lingers in the aftertaste. Mouthfeel is thin, even watery. Medium-high carbonation.

I joined BA just so I could review this beer. This stuff is the kind of beer you bring to party when obligated to do so, and you really don’t like the host. It is literally the worst “IPA” that I’ve ever had. It’s no IPA. If the ABV is what attracts you (some have said so), save your taste buds and just hit some Tequila shots and be done with. Don’t tell another serious beer drinker that you drink this. You’ll instantly lose all respect.

*Note: The can states this was "Brewed & Canned by: RHINELANDER BREWING CO. LLC. MONROE WI 53566."* Purchased at Trader Joe's; poured from a can into a pint glass. It's quite inexpensive. It's a clear, honey color, with above-average carbonation which causes tiny bubbles to rise continuously from the bottom of the glass. Unremarkable head.

It smells grainy. The taste is so-so, a bit below average. It's fairly bitter due to its hop content, but it also has a prominent woody malt character which doesn't taste fresh to me. A hint of a chemical or plastic taste, bordering on rancid. Compared to the IPAs I imbibe regularly, it's subpar.

Got swept up by the price and label promising not just an IPA, but an American IPA. Normally my sweet spot. This was neither. Not awful , but when you’re anticipating APA flavors and get this sweet, malty, ESB like mouthful...I may give the other five away.

The ipa and the double ipa are not terrible but they taste and feel more like an esb to me. Very malt forward and not super hoppy. Not the greatest ipa but not a bad beer for the money

Pours very dark for an IPA, looks like a watered down Guineas. Initially a flat taste followed by and overwhelming taste of bitter, burnt hoops. It literally gave me goose bumps. This is my first ever drain poor.

One of the most brutal ipas I've ever had. Pours a color that is darker than most, usually if you're gonna cheap out on an ipa, you cheap out all around, but here right away it looks like it might have more malt or at least a heavier degree of roasted malt than your average ipa. Its solidly orange and amber to even auburn. Small 1/6" white head. Aroma is totally devoid of dry hopping. There is a mighty metallic presence on the nose.

Taste, eee gad, this was all bitterness. Like maybe they found the highest alpha acid hop and used it. All bitterness. You don't even get grapefruit flavors here, its all copper penny and alcohol. And I don't mean like a boozy alcohol, I mean a rubbing alcohol type of melding with copper.

In terms of style, its disgusting and one of the worst ipas I've ever drunk.

Advertised as an "American IPA," it just doesn't fit the style. It tastes more like a highly hopped Oktoberfest bier. Cloudy but otherwise pleasant orange/amber color. Nose resembles a sweet Bavarian lager. Taste is highly malty and sweet with a good dose of bitterness to balance it. The hops lean toward the spicy with an odd aftertaste. If you want a cheap beer that's way better than Bud, buy it. But if you're jonesing for an IPA, look elsewhere.

Hazy dark orange, nearly brown. Thin patchy skim, no lace.
Apple juice and alcohol aroma, closer to malt liquor than an IPA.
Tastes gross, bitter apple seeds, alcohol, weird acrid aftertaste.
Slick and thin, aftertaste hangs on the palate and doesn’t go away.
Not even close to an IPA, pretty terrible and just a bad beer all around.
Not surprising as this is contract-brewed at Minhas.

It's more like malt liquor. Boozy, not hoppy. Okay, there are hops but not enough to overcome the hot maltiness. and not enough to fit the IPA flavor profile.

Poured into a Bent Paddle chalice--looks of an amber brown with foamy head on top.
On the nose: bready, malt forward sweet caramel and hay
Taste: malty, bread, hints of herbal hop bitterness and quite a bit of booziness
Mouthfeel: not bad, reminiscent of an ESB or English pale ale
overall: decent beer, not overly fantastic by any means. Boozie and bold for sure. More malt forward then anything, not a lot of "pungent" hop flavor. A trader joes special indeed. Can't complain about the price tag, but anyone who purchases this beer isn't getting a world beer cup award.

22oz bottle bought at Trader Joe's. Poured into a Duvel snifter.

Pours a brown-orange color with a small soap like head that dissipates quickly. No lacing to speak of. Smells of sweet caramel malt with no hops and a touch of ethanol. Smells like a bad ole ale to me. Taste mimics the noise. Sweet malt, some booziness and dark fruits. NO hops at all. I had to read the label again to make sure I didn't screw up when I thought I read IPA. Mouthfeel is the best part which is not saying much.

I didn't expect much For a $2.29 bomber. My wife discovered Trader Joe's recently and when see saw this she pulled the trigger. The worst part is she also got me the DIPA. I am cringing thinking about having to drink it so she doesn't get offended. I will definately have that one after a night out drinking good craft beers. Numbing the tastebuds should help. Pass on this one.

Not sure if it is retired yet, just picked this up at Trader Joe's...
This is labelled as an American IPA, but it doesn't fit the taste profile. If I was to sum up the smell and taste in one word it would be malty. This is not a word that springs to mind when you think of a good (or even average) American IPA. I would have given this beer a much higher rating if it was called a pub ale perhaps. The bottle is really pretty though!

Holy cow. This tastes like straight up doody. Extremely malty with no hops. It kind of tastes like grazier from hess brewing company. Boatswain should be embarrassed to call this an ipa

Sure its brewed for Trader Joes, sure it is not a big time IPA, but..................Put the price and the place you got it out of your mind and this is an average + IPA. Nice cloudy, deep gold color with below average head and decent lacing. Aroma is light, with hops and malt being the predominant smell. Taste is definitely more malty than most IPAs but the hops and hop bitterness are present and this beer balances quite well. Some citrus overtones, nice bold carbonation and a good, slightly bitter, clean finish. For what I paid ($2.29 for the bomber), this is a decent light IPA...

Appearance: pours an orange color with a 1/2" head that lasts a bit.

Smell: a strange fruit sweetness rises from the glass and isn't very pleasant.

Taste: caramel, over ripe fruit sweetness, some metallic flavors, very little bitterness, and some off putting flavors like cabbage arrive late.

Mouthfeel: light crispness to start, smooth at the finish. Flavors linger on the tongue.

Overall: this beer was hard to drink and has a weird vegetable flavor.

I do not understand the negative reviews this one gets as I found it to be quite tasty. Pours a nice dark amber color, not much head but great lace retention throughout. Aroma is malty sweet with fruity esters . This is reflected in the taste which is almost cloyingly sweet. However, as I drank on the bitter hops Finnish become more pronounced which balanced the sweetness. Nice feel; smooth, medium bodied and light carbonation, very drinkable.
I shop at trader joe all the time. I love their prices and this one is no exception. I will get again as I consider it a nice middle of the road IPA at a bargain price.

Deep amber. Not much head or carbonation. Fresh bakery aroma. Some citrus. Some vanilla taste. Mild hoppiness. Not a lot of body, but a long aftertaste. For a supermarket brand IPA and the price, it knocks the $13 off the shelf!

Poured from a bomber into a standard glass. I had this sitting around for a few weeks and decided to pop it open last night.

A- Orange/amber, more on the amber side.

S- Hops galore, a decent mix of citrus and floral notes. Not bad overall.

T- Malty, bready, the hops come through at the very end with the bitterness accompanied by the strong citrus from the nose. It almost seemed like the brewers threw in bittering hops but nothing else just to give it its IPA name. I was expecting the citrus to be up front instead of at the end.

M- Somewhat cloying, reminiscent of an English IPA.

O- A decent IPA, not bad but not earth-shattering either. I guess if your significant other wanted to get into what an IPA is like this might be a good starter IPA. Not too shabby for a $2.50 brew!

Boatswain American IPA has a rather thin, off-white head, a mostly clear, orange appearance, some bubbles, and not much lacing left on the glass. The aroma is of mild citrus (think about orange peel), and white bread crust, with possibly a caramelized sugar note. Taste is of all that, with a bitterness that comes across as nowhere near a 79 IBU, but it’s there to at least balance the beer. Mouthfeel is on the light side, and Boatswain American IPA finishes dry, refreshing, and highly drinkable. For a store-brand India Pale Ale, this is a pleasant surprise.

Pours a deep bronze amber with a thin off-white head with good retention and light lacing. Aroma of bready, slightly biscuity malt, overripe stone fruit, no hops that I can detect. Taste is mild biscuit malt, tart orangey citrus and fusel oils or odd esters with mild citrus hop bitterness in the finish. The effect of the hops is masked by the other odd flavors. Medium bodied. I was hoping for a ESB type experience after detecting no hops in the aroma, but this just isn't that pleasant. There is some tartness that may indicate a bad bottle, but perhaps it is just the hops or errors in brewing. I've generally felt that the beers brewed for Trader Joe's where not that great, but accurately delivered on the expectation of a decent, cheap version of each variety. This is just not very good. I hope it's a bad bottle, but will not try it again.

I bought a bottle of Boatswain American IPA in a grocery store (Trader Joe's). Poured in to a pint glass.

Pours a brinze color, clear, with a thin off-white head.

Smell is a sweet caramel scent, with a hint of pine.

Taste is a heavy malt presence. Sweet bread flavors, followed by a mild bitter finish.

Mouthfeel is medium bodied, slightly cloying.

Overall I think this is a better brew than previous ratings would indicate. It's a sweet IPA and not the hop bomb some people might be looking for in the style. It is very good in it's own right.

Don't know much about IPAs or beer in general. I was surprised to see its rating so low on here. I wasn't expecting it to be in the 90s since not much is going on, especially since it's an IPA and I expected more because of that but it's not a bad beer. If the price is right, I think this beer is not a bad choice but for 3.75 at 22oz when I can get 24oz of Genny for .99, I'll go with the Genny. If it was lower though, I'd spring for it here and there though as it's not an overly bitter IPA.
