Rich and Malty

A malty Dubbel-style amber beer with rich, deep and bittersweet flavours.

For Grimbergen Double Ambrée, hints of caramel, dried plums and hops mix with a deep maltiness featuring lots of caramelized notes. The overall sensation is bittersweet, with aromas dominated by sweet ripe fruits.

33cl Bottle, drank 6 months before its death date. Poured into my Westmalle challice.

It obviously looked fine, everything does in a Westmalle challice (even water). Clean and clear body, Ruby Red in colour with a swiftly fading biege head, pity about the head leaving, I like them to stay through the drink.

Sickly molasses in the nose, nothing else could get passed them.

Sweet, too sweet, malts/molasses/treacle/toffee, not good.

The worst Dubbel I've had? Most likely. I've had this beer on tap many times and it has been OK, or at least I thought it was. Sat in the sun on holiday everything seems good and enjoyable, sadly this beer doesn't remind me of those balmy days of summers gone by.

On tap in Toulouse. Pours brown with off white head. Body is full and slightly crisp. Taste is of caramel malt, dark fruit, brown sugar and some spices. Long semi dry finish.

The pickings were pretty slim on our Antarctica cruise ship, so went with a bottle of this.

The beer pours a fairly dark amber copper color with fairly decent head retention and light lacing. Not picking up a whole lot on the nose, just some light sweet malt and Belgian spices, with something of an underlying roasty quality as well. The flavor profile replicates the nose pretty closely in this fairly dry Belgian double, with some burnt toast on the finish. This beer comes across as a Belgian version of a Schwartzbier, at least to my palate. Mouthfeel is fairly light, and the alcohol is very well integrated into the flavor profile. So this come across as an easy going, easy drinking Belgian double.

Nothing special or complicated here, but it's an easy to appreciate and enjoy Belgian double. That being said, probably don't need to order another one of these any time soon
