I never had a coffee lager before, so this sounded interesting. From a 16 oz. can it poured a great caramel color with a one inch head. There was no mistaking the coffee aroma. The coffee flavor was nice and smooth, but it might be a little sweet for some. The head dissipated quickly and the carbonation wasn't overpowering...maybe a little thin.

Very interesting beer. Billed as a lager but had some nice coffee notes. 4/21/20 date printed on can. Pours a deceptively clear golden color with a little fluffy white head and some scant lingering lacing. Smells of crisp bready malt, medium roast coffee, caramel, vanilla, corn and some faint milk chocolate and perhaps some nuttiness. Taste follows the nose, good balance, surprisingly clean crisp coffee punch throughout. Nicely done. Smooth mild mouthfeel, quite round in the mouth for a lager. Good carbonation retention. Quite an interesting, refreshing, easy to drink beer.

Interesting oddity here. The aroma is more pale malts and biscuits rather than coffee. On the palate though, the coffee is more pronounced. There is a bit of adjunct-y sweetness at the end.

Canned 4/24/2020

Golden straw with a finger worth of latte foam head into a pint glass. Retains nice islands on the way down with little to no lacing.

Roasted malt and cold press scents on top of a biscuit and bread lager base.

Great round palette of cold press, think low acidity coffee, lending notes of dark berry and chocolate due to the cold press extraction process. Tricks you into almost thinking this is a stout or porter.

Dark lager maltiness along with pale grains add a medium-full mouthfeel in tandem with a clean and crisp dimension.

With a 6.5% abv this is a solid choice for fans of ales, lagers or heavier stuff. Really interesting and exciting brewski, glad to have another.

Crowler from brewery. Bright golden, big foamy head subsides. While coffee dominates the aroma, it subsides a bit in the taste, allowing a solid lager base to shine through.

Coffee Ale
Golden color
Smells and tastes mostly of coffee, with some toffee and malt. Light and crisp. Very drinkable; a good coffee beer for a summer day.

On-tap at Modist Brewing Co., Minneapolis, MN

A: The beer is clear yellow in color and has a light amount of visible carbonation. It poured with a short white head that left lots of lacing down the sides of the glass.
S: Light to moderate aromas of coffee are present in the nose.
T: The taste follows the smell and has both malty and coffee flavors.
M: It feels light- to medium-bodied on the palate and has a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: This is an easy to drink coffee beer and the coffee is of the fruitier variety (compared to dark and roasty beans).

Thanks, Sam!

Got this on Sam and Laura’s visit out here. I always like my coffee-flavored beer, whether it be a stout, IPA or lager. This one was labeled as a, “A mystery, wrapped in an enigma, inside a coffee bean, inside a lager. A light-colored, easy-drinking beer with a mind-blowing coffee punch. Pairs well with breakfast, brunch, and late night pick-me-ups.”

Poured a dark gold-to-light amber semi-clear color with 2-to-3 fingers of frothy white head. Lots of bubbles coming up along the sides of the glass. Excellent foamy lacing. Almost perfect retention. (Sight - 4.75)

Smelled grinded coffee beans, espresso, brown bread, Cheerios, roasted grain and hints of chocolate milk. Even better out of the can with coffee notes and the addition of char wood. (Smell - 4.25)

Taste was not nearly as good as the nose, but still solid nonetheless. Got espresso, brown bread, semi-char wood, grinded coffee beans, roasted grain, Cheerios and chocolate milk. (Taste - 4.00)

Medium body. Oily-to-creamy texture. Lively carbonation. Long finish. (Feel - 4.00)

Just a really good coffee lager. Love the style and this was as good as I hoped it would be. (Overall - 4.00)

This beer pours a rich bronze with a solid head. The aroma features strong bright acidic coffee, vanilla wafers, and dark chocolate. The flavor is rich and nutty, with notes of toffee, digestive biscuit, whole grain, mild coffee, milk chocolate, an graham cracker. The mouthfeel is medium bodies with a luscious creaminess. Overall a very tasty beer - maybe a bit off putting on first nosing, but one that settles quite deliciously.

Looks and smells the part of a nice pilsner with an added blast of coffee on the nose. Taste is primarily coffee with a sweet malt character. The coffee taste is good, but has a syrupy quality too. Well carbonated and a bit sticky. Sweeter than expected, but pleasant all around.

The nose is smells of coffee, with a hint of peppers.
The taste is mellow, and at the same time rich with coffee.
Lighter bodied, but not watery.
Effervescent and tasty. Good post fishing beer.

Mouthfeel: Light to medium body with moderate carbonation

Overall: A coffee lager is a nice twist here; very enjoyable

Clear, golden-hued, beautiful white head.

Aroma is full of espresso notes, mixed with a very light, floral happiness. It's quite unusual to have coffee notes in beer without accompanying chocolate and dark malt flavors. This is a mind-bender, if not a head-scratcher, but it's working so far.

In the mouth: There it is, again, the coffee leading the fore, and after that, nothing but light and clean. Super smooth, wonderfully light and drinkable, with that espresso flavor lasting and lasting. Crazy drinkable.

if not for the coffee, would i like this beer? kind of on the fence with this one - it's otherwise pretty neutral. the coffee is very prevalent, but this isn't a beer that otherwise screams that it needed coffee. after one on tap and 4 in cans, i can move on from this one and not look back. just kind of ok, i think.

Excellent brew from an excellent local brewery here in Minnesota. This crisp, clean and refreshing lager, with the appearance of a crystal clear golden straw color, acts like a great tasting lager in every single way. However, it packs some intense flavors and aroma of freshly brewed espresso. It is a go-to beer of mine and I highly recommend picking up a 4-pack of tall boys when ever you get a chance. Coffee infused beers aren't made for dark brews anymore and Modist Brewing is making that very clear.

The color is the most surprising part of this beer. Despite the intense roasted and coffee aromas, it pours a clear golden color with a white head. Smells like walking into a good cozy coffee shop and the flavor is unlike anything I've tried before. The roasted notes of the coffee are definitely the defining feature but the coffee aftertaste isn't overpowering. If anything I pick up more of a roasted peanut butter mouthfeel than coffee. This is a special beer.

Poured from a 16 oz. can into a chalice.

Appearance: Pours a fairly hazy amber orange. Moderate amount of bubbles and a solid finger of white head that settles into a thin creamy layer.

Smell: A roasty and toasty aroma with a scent of coffee beans and grains. Big upfront scent of coffee beans. Malt scent of grains, toast, biscuit, oats, cracker, and caramel with yeast. Sweet hints of lactose sugar. A pretty solid roasty aroma.

Taste: Like it smells, a roasty and toasty taste with lots of coffee and grains. Big taste of roasted coffee beans. Malt notes of grains, biscuit, toast, oats, cracker, and caramel along with some yeast. Sweet notes of lactose sugar. A very solid taste.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied with a moderate level of carbonation. Roasty, drying, and smooth.

Overall: A pretty nice coffee beer. Seems more like a blonde similar to Sixpoint's Cream rather than a dark lager. Very good coffee presence.

Arrives a clear bronze color. The head is small. Lacing is minimal. The aroma is all coffee, and so is the taste. I'm getting virtually no beer characteristics at all in this beer. The mouthfeel is medium bodied withmoderate carbonation. Overall, this is a really one dimensional beer. It isn't bad, but it is so simple I can't see myself drinking it again.

Pours a a yellow color with a very white head looks like a Pils/Kolsch. Nice coffee aroma mild and roasted on the nose with wheat and malt. Taste started with coffee but was not a great as the smell still good however malts and hops play nicely with this each sip has that fresh coffee taste. Mouth feel was crisp and dry with a sweet finish. like this brew.

definitely not a euro dark lager as it is classified here, far more of a coffee infused american blonde type, im not even sure its a lager, but i am sure its darn good, easily my favorite of the modist beers so far. impressive coffee flavor in a beer thats not even stained a little bit brown, its heavy on the aroma, like unbrewed but freshly ground espresso, berries and raisins and chocolate, but the beer is blonde, hardly even cloudy, very cool. the flavor is as good as the nose, tons of coffee to it, really leading the way honestly, without a ton of interference from the malt, which seems to be pale and pils types, fermented cool, down to dry. the only sweetness here is buttery creamy chocolate notes from the java. great roast too, deeper than a lot of coffee beers, almost shocking that its this color. very much a morning beer, even more so a hangover beer, easy and light, with the right amount of alcohol and caffeine to overcome a big night. i know they are still figuring it out with most of their stuff in here, but this one is fully polished. a very unique brew, soon to make a name for itself i am very sure. loved it!

Picked up a crowler from the brewery.
L: Pours brilliant amber under a sudsy, moderately persistent off-white foam cap.
S: Has a big coffee nose perceivable from a few feet away.
T: Coffee is the big deal but a blend of caramel and malt support the coffee with a light sweetness. Has a clean fermentation character. The hop presence is medium low.
F: Light to medium light body with medium carbonation.
O: the flavors are a little unusual and almost cloying but the beer surprisingly works. I can probably drink one of these at a sitting but no more.
