The version of this beer sold in Sainsbury in the UK bears little relation to any other Czech beer I have tasted, either in Prague or the UK. Thin, fizzy, metallic and lacking body. Own label Co-op Czech lager is VASTLY superior.

Staropramen has a thick, off-white head and a clear, somewhat bubbly, golden appearance, with thin lacing left behind. The aroma is of sweet, biscuit and bready malt, with a touch of hop zing. Taste is of those elements, with a wonderful and dead-on hop bitterness rounding it out. Mouthfeel is light to medium and prickly, and Staropramen finishes crisp, clean, refreshing, dry, and delicious. Really, this is about as perfect as a beer can get, and I score it world class. This might be the best lager I’ve ever tried. Just fabulous and a must for beer lovers!

Just a great pilsner. Malty and ripe.

The also-ran of Czech pilsners, Staropramen isn't a *bad* beer by any stretch of the imagination, but lacks the punch and the character of a lot of siblings--it's closer to the "Euro lager" style than Pilsner Urquell and Budvar and others.

Nice biscuit and herbal hop aroma (nice bitter greens, slight pepper, but fairly one-dimensional), but the taste is a bit thick and just way too velvety smooth for my tastes--yeasty, doughy, but only slight bittering hop character. Low-ish carbonation, slightly heavy body.

A good brew, but not my personal favourite.

I have a bottle less than 5 weeks old from the back of the bottom shelf. It’s fresh and not skunky. L: Brilliant deep polished gold with a 1” pure white foam collar that slowly dissipates and leaves light lace. S: Clean, rich complex Pilsener malt aromas. No estery, apple or movie popcorn aromas T: Crisp and clean with complex malt flavors with a little tanginess. Soft, rounded bitterness that is assertive but is in balance with the malt. F: Light, above average carbonation. O: A good representative of the style.

This is what a Bohemian Pilsner is supposed to taste like. It pours a light-medium gold with a mousy white head that clings. The aroma has the classic spicy Saaz hops and crackery malt one would expect. Malt dominates the flavor. It's amazing how complex pale Pilsner malt can be when mashed correctly. Melanoidins jump all over your tounge. And the hops do both give a bite and provide a spicy flavor. Medium bodied; the malt won't let it dry out too much. Yet no heat. Long, long malty finish. If you're a malt head and love Pilsner malt--Strapromen is for you.

A-Pours clear straw yellow with 1/4 inch of white head. Reduces almost instantly, leaving intricate lacing; more than I expected given the style.

S-Pale malt sweetness. Possibly some corn? Unappetizing.

T/M-Blah. Sweet, adjunct-y export lager macro swill. Unrefined, one dimensional pale malt sweetness. Light bodied with moderate carbonation.

O-Nothing special, and not a particularly good example of the style.

Very nice color-- much deeper gold than most pils. Totally clear with an okay head that dissipated pretty quickly. Slightly grassy aroma, some euro-hop-funk as well.

Taste is good, definitely fuller than the average pils, higher malt presence makes the mouthfeel desirable, but that there's slightly too many bubbles takes some points away for me. Some lingering bitterness and sweetness at the same time, kind of odd.

Overall not a bad choice, but probably better on-tap in Germany or better yet, the Czech Republic. To me, Pilsner Urquell is a better experience if we're talking bottles. Need to find out what it's like fresh from the barrel.

Poured from an 11 OZ bottle into a pint glass at the World of Beer in Pooler, GA. This beer has a slight hint of the evil green bottle skunk monster, not terrible but noticeable. The color is a bright amber with a mediun sized white head. You can taste the hops and some of the malt but a wee-bit of the skunkiness. Overall, a good Czech Pilsener.

reviewed 27 April 2008, Cataluña, Spain. best by date of 11 October 2008.

pours an orangey-apricot golden with little head. what head there is fades very fast and leaves little lacing in the middle, no stickage. looks very fizzy.

smell is mostly metallic, with some corn and malt notes.

taste also mostly metallic, though the malt shines through a bit more and helps it out a little. bitterness on the finish. just a bit on the crisp side on the crispness-smoothness ratio.

m/d is quite fizzy and light, one step above water. much less there than I would hope for. seems much more like a stereotypical cheap american macro lager than anything self-respecting pilsner should be. although it's light and crispy, leaves a bitter stickiness on the finish.

Served on tap in 0.5 L Starompramen glass, alongside the Vltava river in Prague. Clear, pale gold with a lush, thick head of white foam and good lace. Pale malt grain and grassy hop aroma. Good malt base with slight grain sweetness, and bitter, grassy hop finish. Medium body with smooth, light to medium carbonation. A good, balanced Czech pilsener, slightly less bitter and crisp than Urquell and others.

A- Clear golden, head retention is kinda subpar. Little lacing.
S- The smell is of stale bread dough, a light papperyness, and a bit of noble hops.
T- It's got the right idea for a pilsner. It's sweet and lightly earthy. Slightly grassy. But there is just a lingering staleness that rings it down.
M- Medium-light body, too low on the carb.
O- This was underwhelming. I didn't particularly care for this beer. The staleness and low carbonation just don't do it for me.

Dark gold with a light copper glow lets me know there is more than pils malt in this one. Big whiff of skunk overwhelms all else. Grass clipping hoppiness peaks through but malt is thin and can't stand up to the green bottle curse. Even if this had been deskunked it wouldn't have been close to the Czech pilsener style. More in line with the average Euro pale lager. I would take semi-fresh Urquell over this, which isn't saying much.

Pale gold as expected, clear and bright, this beer meets expectations from the get-go. Also expected is a fluffy, though somewhat sparse, purely white head that shows moderation in both retention and lacing.
There's a bit of husk and corn, some sweetness coming off a sort of dustiness with a little spicy grassiness. It's lightly malty with some citrus notes to it, possibly part of the very light hops bill. It's a little grainy but fits the style and does barely exceed the average in its overall character.
There's actually a little harshness I wasn't expecting that kind of builds up at the back of the throat. It's not astringent, exactly, it just bites a little. Surprisingly, though, it doesn't detract too much from the mouthfeel of an otherwise nice, crisp, light-bodied brew.
