Staropramen Granat is a unique lager which proudly embodies our brewing traditions. This beer is made based on the original recipe from 1884. The special sprinkling process, mixing pale and specialty malts is what gives the beer its unique granat (ruby red) color.

Purchased at Albert Hypermarket in Pilsen, Czech Republic, and drunk a week later at Camping Erlensee in Schechen, Bavaria.

L: Orangey copper with a fluffy, off-white head. Lots of carbonation rushes up the glass.

S: Rich caramel and burnt toffee.

T: Fruity dark toffee and caramel. Mild, fruity bitterness. Bitter, lingering finish. Very nice.

M: Mild, with light to medium carbonation. Suits the beer well.

O: A very tasty and pleasantly bitter Polotmavy. I could drink quite a few of these.

Cheers!

A Czech Amber Lager, huh? Never had one before. I love Czech lagers but I must admit that I am not a huge fan of anything else… love my lezaks nice, crisp and easy to drink and this kind of goes against that in a way (obviously.) I was hoping for something lighter by the 4.8% ABV but it was quite intensive. Was not bad though just different from what I expected and what I was used to from the Czech Republic.

Poured from 500mL can into a tall kitchen glass. Best by 5/19/23.

Appearance: rich orange hue with a clear body and a finger of frothy ivory foam atop. Pretty!

Smell: quite sweet and rather toasty; there’s some caramel and even a little biscuit here. It’s nice.

Taste: caramelly for sure, with a nice bitterness toward the end. Perhaps on the sweet side for my taste, but still, a good beer.

Mouthfeel: medium body with a decent carbonation and creaminess.

Overall: I’m certainly no expert on Czech amber lagers, but aside from being a bit sweet, this is a solid beer.

Bought at a supermarket in Olomouc (Moravia, Czech Republic). Half liter can poured into a pint glass.

-2 mm foam head that leaves small traces. Reddish transparent look.
-Cheddar cheese smell and also herbal.
-Bitter and hoppy. Mildly spicy.
-Not a lot of aftertaste.

Good but nothing too special.

CAN
Pale amber with thin white head that doesn’t last; caramel, dough + maybe butterscotch on the nose, plus soap + flowers; faint toast + caramel, some graham cracker and spicy hops; clean, super dry finish.

Drinking this against BJCP Czech Amber guidelines. Head doesn’t hang around, nose skews sweet, and no real depth to the specialty malts. Where it is distinctive is the assertive, cutting hop end - very much a pils. It is not “ approaching an English bitter but significantly richer with more of a deep caramel character” but it is true to say “ large brewery versions are generally similar to Czech Premium Pale Lager with slightly darker malt flavors and less hop.” So, an on target but weak example of the style.

Not unpleasant.
