Review: 50cl, can of Lapin Kulta: 5.2% vol.

My first beer tryout from Finland. The beer uses an original recipe that dates back more than 140 years ago and brewed from the icy water of Lapland, this should be interesting!

The information on the can makes the beer sound epic! “The golden beer of Lapland. Lapin kulta is a creation of the rugged terrain of Finnish Lapland. Finland’s premium lager comes from the purest spring water filtered naturally on its journey through a land formed by the ice age. Golden barely and pristine water are brewed together according to tradition to produce the true gold of Lapland”

“Full malts” on the can, good. Can is also interesting in its design, looks more like an energy drink for sale than a beer.

On pour I get a very nice frothy white head with a clear golden colour. Head has a good size, and maintains well.

Good bit of lacing too. Looks very good, nice and clear

A nice clean aroma from the beer, has a typical lagery smell, grainy, wheaty, sweet and malty, Overall it is a nice lovely light smell.

Getting nice and creamy tastes at the start, also a good bit of malt.

Also getting some floral hops in the taste that were a little bit too sweet, kind of giving it a soapy taste, which wasn’t terrible just a little strange!

It is a very light tasting beer, but not like a standard lager.

Very soft n crisp.

Second can was served cold from fridge, not as nice. Nothing particularly wrong with it, but it killed the taste and I got a general blandness to it all. Hops not really noticeable, very light bitter and all thin in the taste.

Overall it did go down the hatch easy enough, solid and drinkable, but nothing amazing. I think I’d like to give it another try…………

This is slightly dark for a pale lager, and head leaves lots of lacework on the glass. Aroma is weak, but taste is lively and snappy, but not lingering. Taste almost reminds me of a ginger ale...

Lapin Kulta looks absolutely beautiful, but it tastes like a liquefied toaster. Barely drinkable.

With that said, it is a macro-lager which is brave enough to be different while remaining popular within Scandinavia. Personally I'm going to avoid this as best as I can, and would prefer a Bud Light over it. But (for better and, I would argue, for worse) it's more interesting than the American macro lagers.

A: I used to drink this beer frequently at this pub in Singapore, and truth be told it is an exceptionally pretty looking beer. Pours out a beautiful golden colour with lots of bubbles which dissipated quite quickly.

S: Some skunkiness, lots of grain and some hint of fruitiness in the smell but rather hard to place. Nothing really special.

T: This is what let this beer down a great deal. It tasted like bread, but not in a good way. As it got warmer the taste got more and more cloying and there was some unwanted sweetness towards the end.

M: Very bubbly in the mouth initially but after a while it feels rather flat.

D: Average, nothing to write home about.

Overall a pity. The beer looks very nice and the glass it comes in looks even nicer. I tried this beer a few times thinking I just got a bad batch but all taste depressingly the same.

Once again, I spent way too much to give this beer a try. I imagine that here in Switzerland, there must be a loyal following of Finns who like to feel at home by finding this beer stocked at the COOP market in Geneva. Though it starts out nice and gold, the head is large bubble carbonation that leaves little lacing. Perfectly inoffensive in that you could serve this to anyone who drinks beer and they would be hard pressed to hate it. It has a malty and sweet upfront burst that flattens out to a dry and clean mouthfeel and finish. If this were a cheap macro I would buy it over Feldschlossen and Cardinal. But at nearly 3 francs a can, it is too average to pick up again. Now, if I were in Finland, I would go native and drink this in a pub.

Bought it in Riga as Lapin Kulta Premium Lager.

Pours light golden with almost no carbonation and some head that soon dissipates leaving very small film and patchy and very scarce lacing. Aroma is straw and mild sweetish malty.

Taste is dry rather bittery and slightly sour and citric with almost no aftertaste. Light mouthfeel with around medium carbonation.

I did not like this one. It was not even watery, but the taste was not at all pleasant. I could drink this beer if it would be icy cold.

Lapin Kulta IVA is a 5.2% ABV standard Euro lager. There is also a 8.0% IVB. The IVA poured with just a little foam but a lot of carbonation. Its color was golden yellow and it smelled of sour bread. All the collapsing bubbles on my tongue made it taste dry but apart from that it was bitter and sour, a bit citric and some sweetness. Nothing to write home about but still not as watery as many other beers in the same style.
