this is epic beer, straight up, and for a maple syrup lover and a follower of this beer geek series of beers from mikkeller, its a real exclamation point! thick as used motor oil from the pint can and nearly as black, short tan head resting on top. the aroma here is absurd, over the top in a good way, maybe too much to some folks, but its pure maple syrup, vanilla beans, and good coffee, with the maple really leading the way and the vanilla apparently not as sugary is it is in the normal vanilla shake edition of this beer. the base stout is of course excellent, oaty and rich, creamy and roasty, lots of chocolate and bakers cocoa to it, a nice base for the vanilla, well integrated there, needing it for balance. i think the maple sort of does the same thing with all the coffee in here too, its balancing the acidity, but it also flavors this beer like mad, pure maple syrup from start to finish in nose and taste, about as much of it as i have ever seen in any beer, and the texture says so too. its thick and sticky and sweet and sappy, goes down the throat like a shot of maple syrup, its awesome! as thick and heavy as this is, its not overly alcoholic to me, and i feel it a lot more than i taste it by the time we get near the end of the pint can. coffee bitterness abounds, good roast and heft from the base stout, and the vanilla tying it all together. this is absolutely next level, perhaps my favorite beer in this mightily impressive series of maple forward as it gets, and so thick going down. we absolutely loved it!

A: Pours an opaque thick viscous jet black in color with moderate amounts of fine active visible carbonation rising along the edges of the glass and very faint amounts of very dark cola brown colored highlights. The beer has a two finger tall dense foamy dark tan head that slowly reduces to a medium sized patch of medium thick film surrounded by a large patch of thin film covering the remainder of the surface of the beer and a medium thick ring at the edges of the glass. Significant amounts of lacing are observed.

S: Just shy of strong aromas of vanilla, lactose sweetness, and maple syrup sweetness. Moderate aromas of milk chocolate and dark chocolate as well as caramel, chocolate and roasted malts. Light aromas of dark roasted coffee/espresso beans,

T: Upfront there is a moderate flavor of roasted malts with strong flavors of caramel + chocolate malts. There are moderate to strong flavors of milk chocolate, dark chocolate, and coffee/espresso along with just shy of strong amounts of lactose + maple syrup sweetness. Strong flavors of vanilla. Light amounts of roasty bitterness which fades away quickly leaving a moderate lingering sweet vanilla flavor.

M: Full bodied with moderate amounts of carbonation. Smooth with a hint of alcohol warming in the finish.

O: This is a big, rich, sweet stout which is perfect for dessert. Very enjoyable and hides the alcohol well considering the strength of this beer.

Beautiful dark syrup beer. Poor carbonation, cloyingly sweet almost medicinal soft-drink aroma smell. Taste is more muted, still excessively sweet. Mouthfeel is incredible, chewy and thick.
