11 July 2012: 330ml can poured into a tumbler on the balcony of our holiday apartment in the Algarve after a days sun lounging.

Just what I needed: usual pale lager/pilsner look, feel and odourless nose (gets my normal score of 3 for a non-smelling lager/pilsner).

This your typical cheap European pilsner and fine for hot days in the sun, but not for serious beer drinkers.

Cristal Pilsener Desde 1890, 33l bottle, had in Portugal.

A Clear, standard Pilsner look. 3

S Clean aroma no hops or malt. 2

T Plain, very similar to mega brewery interpretations of the Pilsner style. Clean. 2.5

M Thin, no surprises based on the tasts. 2

D OK for a pils. There are limited choices for good beer in Portugal. Unfortuneately the best beers are imported to Portugal. Too bad, this country could use a good iconic beer. 3

The least distinctive of several mediocre brews we enjoyed in high quantity whiole renting a villa in the Algarve to celebrate my parents' fortieth weding anniversary, Cristal features a decently heady and and laced golden body with almost no smell short some adjuncty grain.

The mouthfeel is ridiculously limp and thin and the taste is nearly nonexistant. It is tasteless, inoffensive and supremely boring. Okay for sessioning if you don't value taste.

330ml 5.1%abv

Appearance: Light golden, reasonable head that disappears a few seconds after pouring, leaving no lace.

Smell: Light maize with a tiny hint of hops.

Taste: Tastes like flour dissolved in water, with a metallic after taste. One of the worst of the macro-larger I've had.

Mouth feel: Light with good carbonation.

Drinkability: If it weren't for the taste, the light nature of the beer would make it reasonably drinkable on a very hot day.

From a .33 CL bottle into a glass, the beer is a crystal clear light gold color. It has a large soapy head (foaming agents?) and a bit of lacing.

The aroma is of pale grains, floral hops and a very slight sulfur note.

The beer is mildly hoppy with what I think are Saz hops. There is a grainy underbelly and a slightly astringent finish. Sweet but balanced. Seems more bitter than most of its Portuguese brethren.

The mouth is crisp with active carbonation. The mouth thins a bit at the end, but this is an easy drinker to have while sitting in the sun.

I actually thought enough of this beer to buy 6 packs on a few different occasions.

Cristal is bottled by Unicer as a combat beer with a cheaper price than the company main beer (Superbock). So don’t expect much…

Appearance: very clear with a light yellow color. White and well formed head, although moderately low and with an impaired retention.
Aroma: weak grainy and adjuncty aroma.
Taste: confirms the smell. Very adjuncty.
Mouthfeel: dry, low alcoholic strength, good carbonation and light body.
Finish: dry that don’t last long.

Overall: one more bland macro lager. My first and last one.
