Notes: More of a golden doppelbock. Clear copper with glowing golden highlights beneath a creamy off-white head. Aroma of malt, soft fruit, and a light waft of yeasty sulphur. The flavor is straightforward following the suggestions of the aroma. The alcohol shows a touch, which is probably desired, and lends a bit of a spicy balance. Nicely done.

According to the label, this version is amped up to an eight percent ABV. That's more impressive than the pour of a pint can into a clear glass liter mug. That result is of a starchy off-white head billowing several inches above the beer. For an alleged dopplebock, this is pretty light in color. It may be a copper-amber, but most good examples of this style run somewhat darker. Still, it's reasonably opaque. The head receded quickly, leaving almost no glass lacing. There's a malty aroma, but it's not particularly enticing, nor carrying the earthy sweetness of a true dopplebock. It doesn't taste badly. There is some sweet maltiness, for sure. But, there's also an alcohol burn following a way too light for the style mouthfeel. Sorry to disrespect a neighbor, but this isn't very good, let alone worth the alcohol and calories now consumed.

My rating for this is a bit skewed... When I tasted the beer it had a bit more acidity and vinegar to it than I'd expect, especially for a big malty beer like a doppelbock. I suspect that it's perhaps infected, maybe with acetobacter or lactobacillus. That being said, I thought it made for an amazingly interesting beer. It was refreshing to have such a new taste in a beer and the balsamic vinegary taste to it was way more delicious than I'm sure it sounds. Infection or not I'd love to give this beer another try.
