Appearance: Pours a copper color with a very small head, leaving some lacing.

Smell: This is the part that I enjoy the most in pumpkin ales, but there's not much going on. Smell is subdued with very light pumpkin and spice notes.

Taste: More emphasis is placed on the spices than the pumpkin, and the spices aren't taken too far and work together to hide the alcohol taste. The pumpkin flavor doesn't taste fresh or interesting.

Mouthfeel: Thin/medium bodied with high carbonation. I think it's a bit too tingly on the tongue.

Overall: There are a lot of pumpkin ales out there. This isn't necessarily bad, but there's nothing going on that makes this worth trying. The alcohol is high, but everything else about the beer is small. This doesn't compare well next to craft beer but is better than some of the widely available pumpkin ales such as Shipyard.

Hazy golden orange beer. Thin head disappears quickly.

Spices and vegetal pumpkin aroma. Also sweet and malty.

A nice balance of spices. Some actual pumpkin flavor and a sweet malty backbone.

A velvety smooth mouthfeel. Medium to heavy bodied with light carbonation.

Local brew served from the bottle in downtown Spartanburg. Poured into plastic cup and the look is what you would expect. Nice deep amber, light brown. Adequate off white head that hangs for a bit. Smell is a bit subdued with hints of pumpkin, nutmeg, cinnamon and cloves. Taste follows the nose with a nice blend of malts and hops. A spice is a bit on the bitter end which leaves a hint of an aftertaste. Nothing special on the taste. Feel is decent with nice carbonation and a somewhat thick creamy feel. Overall- It's a pretty average seasonal pumpkin. Like the balance, but not the aftertaste. For me, it's a heavier spice profile that perhaps is the distraction. Worth a try, but not my favorite-

12 oz bottle poured into a pint glass at fridge temperature.

L – Medium amber color with a 1-finger bubbly white head that dissipates rapidly into a ring around the beer-glass interface. A tiny bit of lacing. Clear with lots of bubbles.

S – Bready, pie-crust-esque malt with lots of pumpkin and the slightest bit of pumpkin pie spices, especially nutmeg. A really nice pumpkin rather than pumpkin pie aroma.

T – Sweet all the way through with bready, graham cracker, caramel malt and lots of pumpkin. The pumpkin pie spices come through near the finish with some nutmeg, clove, and cinnamon. There’s much more spice than the nose suggests.

F – Medium-bodied with good carbonation, a sticky and slightly chewy mouthfeel, and a spicy and dry finish. Pumpkin pie spice lingers nicely and lends a nice throat-warming sensation. A little bit of alcohol maybe contributes to this as well, but at 7% ABV, I’m betting that contribution is minimal.

O – This is a pretty tasty pumpkin beer. The major issue that I have with it is the discrepancy between the aroma and the taste. The aroma made me think that this was going to be a very pumpkin forward beer as opposed to pumpkin pie spice forward. However, there were certainly more spices in the taste than I anticipated. That’s not to say this is a bad beer at all. It just kind of took me by surprise. It’s still very tasty, very drinkable, and it hides the 7% really well. Good fall brew from RJ Rockers.
