Draft pour into a shaker pint glass at Back Street Brewery in Irvine.

A: Clear, brassy golden color with one finger of diminishing white foam head. Moderate lacing remains on the glass, and numerous lazy streams of bubbles rise in the column.

S: Mild green herbaceous plant stems, old tobacco ash, toasted grain, and cardboard are all detectable--not much of a portfolio, so the smell of this beer is the most forgettable quality.

T: Begins dry, with intense piney and much lesser mixed citrus hop aromatics. Malt qualities are not featured early, although acidity is fairly heavy--almost to the point of being distracting. Mild toasted malt emerges in the middle which is still dominated by piney hops, although acidity becomes less intense. Mild but astringent bitterness is present in the finish but it gives way to this beer's best quality, which is the lingering taste of focused flowery hops. Every beer's flavor should end on such a positive note as this.

M: Thin to medium viscosity, wet and slightly sticky on the palate, with high carbonation that is felt more as fullness in the gut than as prickliness on the tongue.

D: This is a beer with a fairly intense flavor profile that gives the drinker pause as initially off-putting, but becoming more approachable and appealing as it is consumed. It does impart a slightly bloated feeling in the stomach, just as many of the Bruery's beers do, but it finishes like a fairy tale--Happily Ever After--leaving the best impression possible.

Not sure exactly on the availability of some of these beers, it seems like every time I go here they have a different name for their IPA. In any case the impression I got from this beer overall was that it's their Pacific Pale Ale converted into an I.P.A.

The beer poured a deep copper color that produced a good amount of foam. Head retention was moderate and left some nice lacing on the glass. The little bit of smell that it did have was malty and hoppy but it was difficult to smell anything especially with 100 other people in the building all eating pizza and other strong smelling foods.

The taste was very similar to their pale but a bit more malty. There was a nice hop malt balance in the flavor but overall it wasn't that great of a flavor. It was medium bodied and went down smooth.

Pleasant enough brew. Big problem is the price. Even at a happy hour price point of 3.00, it's just not enough of an IPA to make it worthwhile.

Pours a coppery gold. Two or three inches of white foam head. FAintly of floral and citrus notes.

TAste is a bit acrid, with some bittering pine, a splash of citrus, maybe a hint, just a hint, of malt sweetness. Really more of a bitter pale than an IPA.

Quaffable.

On-tap at Back Street (Irvine)

A: The pour is a strangely hazy orange tinted straw color with a nice white head. I've never seen an IPA that looks quite like this.

S: The nose is quite fruity, which is nice. Orange, grapefruit, pineapple hop aromas are pleasant. Some sweet malt underneath the hops.

T: A pretty nice flavor profile to this beer. Lots of fruity hops with pineapple, tangerines, and apricot. A moderate bitterness is there, but is sort of grassy.

M: The body is medium with a moderate carbonation.

D: There must have been some reworking of the recipe because this beer is nothing like the other reviews. I quite liked this beer, I must say. One of my favorites from Back Street.
