To celebrate our beloved state's 200th birthday, we brewed 1820, a sour ale that features an array of high quality Maine ingredients: blueberries, blackberries, raspberries, grain, and of course, water. This bicentennial beer is an homage to the beauty that surrounds us in this amazing state.

So, this is Mast Landing's sour ale celebration of Maine's bicentennial (or, two-hundred year anniversary of the state being incorporated) and features blueberries, blackberries, and raspberries. Sounds a bit like one of the All The Way Up series beers sans lactose, I guess, though it's also a percent-and-a-half stronger and features only berries instead of some of the more odd combinations ATWU can sometimes bring together. I'm excited to give this one a shot!

Pours a clear cherry-red color (actually, almost looks like... Cherry 7-Up?) with a little bit of paleness in the hue. Thin-ish off-pink head bubbles up and quickly dissipates to just about nothing. I love the transparent appearance and gorgeous color here, but like with most quick-sours, it just isn't as attractive as it could have been with some damn head retention. I guess every style has its Achilles' heel, though, eh?

The nose is dark berries with a hint of Merlot grapes. Big blackcurrant/blackberry, stemmy/grassy blueberry, and jammy, sweet raspberry with a tinge of light lemony tang in the back, as is the case with a lot of fruited kettle sour beers. I'm really enjoying the complex, almost "deep" fruit element this has. It doesn't smell light and refreshing, really, but rather kind of intense and multi-layered? Hoping that carries over onto the tongue, where the mouthfeel will kinda determine the way this one drinks and sits on the palate.

Unfortunately, this does have a thin-ish body which is immediately a bit of a letdown to me. The flavors are pretty good but kinda standard based on what fruits were used. I'm not disappointed, overall, because they accurately render a sour with these three berries, it just doesn't really live up to what I expected from the nose. None of that complex grape note here, but the blueberry and blackberry do feel more prominent than the more "moderating" raspberry presence. In terms of acidity, this is approaching medium-level tartness. It has a slight shock upfront but without much carrying through on the tongue. The finish seems refreshing and spritzy despite the stronger-than-usual ABV for this style. A bit of lemon/pomelo mingling with the dark berry character. Could probably be better, but I'll enjoy the four pack for sure!
