Hinterland Maple Bock pours a finger of tan foam over an inky brown fluid. Carbonation is very subdued and the head collapses into a sticky disk pretty quickly. The nose suggests a myriad of dark flavors- molasses and bitter chocolate predominate, with notes of raisin. The flavor is big, bold, and straightforward- sweet dark malts, with touches of diacetyl, grain, and dark chocolate, finishing with bitter notes of espresso and herbs. Mouthfeel is full is round, drying a bit, though the maple syrup that I feel contributed to the drying did impart a very mild impression of syrup in the aftertaste. Good solid brew.

Eyed this all day, and finally split a four pack with a coworker...

a - a nice light brown, deep amber pour with decent sized, soft looking head

s - light notes of the maple syrup, sugar...some maltiness - but again, lighter than I'd hoped...

t - get a nice, light hit of the maple presence...mixed amongst a decent malt backbone..touch of smoke...

m - pretty palatable

0 - pretty decent beer... perfect w/ pancakes, eggs, and bacon!

Served in a Stone Ruination IPA pint.

A- pours a dark copper, 2 finger tan head. Some lacing that resides quickly.

S- toasted malts, slight smoke, maple syrup

T- sweet toasted malts, some smoke, just a hint of vanilla. Maple syrup comes through more as the beer warms.

M- medium body with a lighter carbonation feel. Easy drinking beer with nice crispness at the finish.

O- liked this beer but nothing outstanding. Not sure if I would by again, but would drink again.

Had all sorts of anxiety before opening this bottle; how much maple would there be, does the maple over power this lager, is the APV too high oh lord?

It looked good in my snifter, a slick black brew with minimal head which disipated fast, but, I'd just poured it after walking in from a January night dog walk. Was my nose too stuffed up to appreciate the bouquet? In fact it wasn't. There are faint hints of a roasty stout, but that's it, faint hints. There is a light lingering hop after taste, but let me emphasize 'light'. After a while this opened up to some more flavors but beyond that there was not much to taste from this Maple Bock, not even the maple! This was a let down from Hinterland, but not all was lost with a steal of a purchase at $3 for a single pint bottle from Armanetti's on Lincoln.

Another great offering from Hinterland. This is by far my favorite seasonal they offer. 16oz bottle poured into a standard pint glass

Appearance: Dark brown pour with a foamy head. Looks great and leaves a nice lacing on the glass
Smell: Was expecting a blast of maple syrupy smell, but instead its rich, smoky, and subtly sweet instead. No complaints because I was hoping it wouldnt be like drinking a bottle of maple syrup. Apparently this is brewed using maple syrup made by the brewery, which is a bonus.
Taste: Spot on. The "maple" isn't necessarily a syrupy taste, but again, more of a smoky, wood flavor that the syrup might have been stored in. Real maple syrup isn't like the Aunt Jemimi you get off the grocery store shelves. This tastes more like real maple syrup you would get off a farm.
Mouthfeel: Creamy and smooth. Just as you would imagine a beer like this should be. I hate when a beer tastes great, but the mouthfeel doesn't match the taste characteristics. This beer pulls it off flawlessly.

Overall: Again, another spot on brew by Hinterland. I've heard they might offer this in a barrel aged and I can't wait to check that out.

Poured from a 16 oz bottle into a Willi Becher pint glass. This bock is darker than I expected...very dark brown with reddish tint on the outside. Beautiful khaki head formed. Settles quickly.
First tried this beer at a festival, where it was explained that the maple syrup used is made by the owner of the brewery. Very cool.
You don't get a big maple syrup flavor...more of a subtle maple wood hint. There is also a undertone of smokiness. I'm not usually a fan of smokey beers, but this is so subtle that it works for me. This is a very tasty beer.
The mouthfeel is so silky smooth; very enjoyable to drink.

Overall, this beer is killer. I paired this with a pork butt that I braised in this beer, and together it was awesome. Recommend.

as i've said before I get migraines from darker beers and I also get migraines from chocolate.

Fortunately I get both the flavor of choolate and NO migraine from this one. Yeah!!!

More syruoy than the winterland, less bitter and a nice chocolate buzz. Like winterland it seems to loose its flavor as it warms, at least the chocolate flavor.

The two side by side I'd go for the winterland first, but if I wanted one to go with vanilla ice cream or poundcake or shortbread this would be the perfect companion.

I could even see mixing it with butter, maple syrup and cream and pouring it over pancakes.

Yum!

16oz bottle shared with my mom.

Appearance: beautiful deep amber, robust head up front slowly dissipates, fine lacing.

Smell: big medium-weight maltiness, molasses, no notable hop characteristic. No maple that I can detect.

Taste: more of the maltiness, hint of sweetness.

Mouthfeel: outrageously smooth, creamy carbonation. Like a silk pillow for my tongue.

Overall: nice, drinkable beer. Jeez, I just now looked at the ABV. This could be a troublesome beer.

A: Deep cola brown rimmed by a thin brown collar.

S: A big whiff yields rich chocolate and caramel malts as well as some herbal/hay-like attributes.

T: Wasn’t quite sure if the herbal scents were actually hops or something else, but the flavor confirmed my suspicions. Starts out surprisingly bitter, transitioning into coffee and chocolate flavors. Bitterness easily overshadows what little sweetness the maple might have contributed. Finish is long and heavy on the roasted malt.

M: Smooth slick body with a bone dry finish. Moderately carbonated, yet feels pretty snappy.

Maple wasn’t too apparent for me in the flavor, although its effects were noticeable in the mouthfeel. I’m wondering if this was a sweeter beer when released in the spring (early summer?). It was also hopped a bit more heavily than I’ve previously experienced in the style. Still, all things considered, a tasty option.

Got a bottle from my buddy. This beer pours great into a pint glass. Looks and smells amazing. This beer will pour with a thick and creamy head. It looks beautiful. I was expecting more of a maple syrup taste since it is in the name but they definitely don't overdo it. The mouthfeel is just how it looks - thick and creamy. This is hands-down the best bock I have ever drank. The maple taste is there but it is not overdone and is in the background. If you see this beer at your local liquor store, it is a must-buy if you like bocks.

Pours a dark brown with amber highlights on the bottom. Thick khaki-colored head. Dusty cocoa aroma, with sweet malt and a hint of maple. The mouthfeel is medium in body with a soft carbonation. The taste starts off with a malty front followed by dark fruit. There's a touch of maple sweetness in the middle. The finish has slight smokiness to it, with burnt raisins toward the back.

Very nice winter beer. Love the rich maltiness of this combined with the sweet maple and bock flavors.

Appearance: Murky brown colored body with an off white almost tan head. Lacing is sticking everywhere.

Smell: Chocolate and Maple brown sugar oatmeal.

Taste: Mildly sweet malt profile that is huge dark chocolate, cocoa, carmel, and some maple. Also getting a woody and nutty taste. Some earthy notes are coming out as well. Aftertaste has a grassy hops kick with some mild astringency that seems to balance the beer nicely against this beastly malty profile.

Mouthfeel: Meduim bodied beer with moderate carbonation almost becoming a beer with high levels of carbonation. Really dry finish which also helps balance the beer.

Overall: My first Hinterland beer. It is a good beer and I really enjoyed it, but it was not what I expected at all. I wanted the maple to become more of a star player in this beer and it was not at all sweet like I thought it would be. Not really a bock to me either. Regardless, of those minor details this beer is still damn good!

A- Very dark mahogany, nearly opaque. One finger tan head with good staying power.

S- Deep rich caramel malts dominate with vinous dried fruits not far behind. Adding further depth and complexity is lighter notes of toffee, maple, and very faint notes of chocolate.

T- Rich caramel hits first but is not overpowering. This is accompanied almost imediately by mellow yet pronounced toasty and nutty notes. Any notes of maple seem restrained. The finish is very balanced with a light noble hop note.

M- Medium to full bodied with a slight carbonic bite that I feel is just barely enough to detract from some of the flavors.

O- This is truly a great bock. There are only two negative things I could say which are both fairly minor. First, the carbonation is a bit much, but this can also be fixed by a slightly harder pour to drive off the excess CO2. Second, it wasn't as "maplely" as I would of thought, then again that can also be attributed to brewing skill depending on the brewers intention. Intentions aside I really enjoyed this beer and I look forward to cellaring some to see how they develop.

Russet brown coloration, tan foam that lasts for awhile. Eventually the foam settles and dwindles down to a wispy skim.

Authentic 100% maple syrup aroma comes out as it warms, but is muted if served cold. Earthy sweetness like molasses and real maple syrup (obviously).

Robust flavor, bittersweet with some chocolate malt, woody toastiness, finishing dry with no residual sweetness at all. Similar to real maple, it's not a sweet taste or cloying either. Lingering traces of hearty malt flavors. Medium bodied, but easily drinkable. The dryness is a nice characteristic, more pleasant that ultra-sweet bocks.

Found at Woodman's in Janesville, WI.

Bock is a style that Wisconsin breweries excel at and this is no exception, in fact, this might be a classic example of how a bock should be.

Pours with a dark, cloudy, root-beer appearance, thick creamy bronze head. Aroma is slightly chocolaty but mild. Taste is strong roasted malts, with a touch of bite and tinge of burnt bitterness. Mouthfeel is excellent.

I was expecting this too be overly sweet and sticky - a property that does not appeal to me most of the time. This was definitely not overly sweet, in fact, I think it could use a touch more maple/sweet character. It is easy to over-do this, so I hesitate to suggest such feedback. However, if were possible to pronounce the maple character without sacrificing drinkability, I think Green Bay brewing company could have hit a home run.

I'm not sure the term "maple" helps the perception in this case, as it surely influenced my expectations. Regardless, this is a very good Wisconsin bock.

A-Muddy brown colored...no head..

S-Chocolate brownie aroma..fudge...very light maple impression

T-A lot of chocolate...I expected maple but got chocolate...whatever...it works....tasty...lacks basic bock characteristics for the most part or they are overridden by the chocolate..

M-Low carbonation....easy drinking...

O-Don't expect a lot of maple....don't expect a lot of basic bock characteristics...DO expect a nice tasty beer. A bit different but enjoyable and drinkable.

In the nose, you get a hefty whiff of Maple, dark brown sugar, a little earthy funk and perhaps a touch of rum or brandy.

The color is dark and rich, with a reddish hue, but a certain blackness towards the middle.

Upon first sip, damn this beer has gotten better with a little age. The maple syrup is really coming through big-time, now. Lot's of sticky dark brown sugar, hazelnut nuttiness, a touch of earthy hop bitterness.

Again, some age does this beer some good. The first bottles I cracked were nowhere near as amazing as this one. A knockout bock from Hinterland...I've never had anything else like it.

A - Deep brown with ruby and mahogany highlights. Thin tan creamy looking head. Very nice when held up to the light.

S - Chocolate and caramel malts, candied dark fruits, hints of maple syrup.

T - Bready Munich malt with some caramel sweetness. Hints of chocolate, earthy hops and some maple syrup. The maple syrup is a little more noticeable in taste than aroma.

M - Medium body with moderate carbonation and a dry finish.

D - A tad sweet at times but a very solid bock.

Pours a very dark crimson brown, that approximates black unless back lit. The dark tan suds never gain much size, but collect in pockets of large bubble around the sides of the glass and slide their way down.
Potent aromatics of dark chcolate, caramel fudge, prunes, Brandy, and coffee. Maple can possibly be teased out, but it's just as lighly a byproduct of some of the sweeter element that come through more strongly.
The nose promises something that will drink like booze-soaked chocolate cake batter, and that's not too far from what it delivers, though in a dialed down, more drinkable format, with a side of espresso. Toss in a hefty dollop of caramel, toasted nuts, prunes, and a dusting of dark chocolate.
It enters the mouth porty, dense, and full, then deflates as it travels towards the throat. Carbonation is stunted, then seems to die altogether. With a better feel representation, this could be a home run of a bock- it's a solid stand-up double as it- just don't come here expecting a bottle of maple syrup.

On tap at the Sugar Maple. Served in a standard pint glass.

A: Dark brown nearing black. About a finger of dark tan head. Tiny bit of lace. Decent retention.

S:Sweet dark fruits. Hints of caramel, chocolate, coffee, roast nuts and brown sugar.

T: Much more coffee and chocolate in the flavor. Mild hop bite, dark fruit and maple nut. I was dreaming of maple syrup. Sadly I was a bit let down.

M: Smooth rich body. Mild carbonation.

D: I love bocks and this one does not disappoint. I wanted more maple but I'm not complaining. Very tasty.

A: Dark crimson body, little lacing and ring of head.

S: A burnt very German barley malt character with a tinge of brown sugar on top (maple?). Some plum like smells as well as maybe a berry aroma.

T: Nice taste of a solid bock with extra choclatey malt and brown sugar. Not a definitive maple taste in there to me, but has a nice taste overall like eating a hearty chocolate cake.

M: A little thin and small carbonation.

D: Not bad overall, an interesting beer.

16oz bottle poured into imperial pint.

A- Pours a deep cola brown with a decent one finger head. The head dies down quickly and doesn't leave much for lacing.

S- Some nice malts and maple with a hint of black licorice. A little bit of sugary sweetness to go along with a small dose of hops.

T- The malts and black licorice are picked up right away. There is less maple than I had anticipated and a touch of tobacco.

M- Medium bodied but feels as if it is flat but that doesn't detour me much. A little watery on the finish.

D- I was excited to hear about this beer but upon tasting it, I was a little let down that the maple flavor wasn't stronger. Still a good offering but if you are looking for more maple, look elsewhere.

Appearance- Deep dark brown. Vague cloudiness when held up to the light. Poured an 1" very light tan head. Almost no lacing.

Smell- sweet roasted malt. I'm really trying to smell the maple but hey my nose isn't that great.

Taste- sweet malt, a slight roasted malt bitterness on the end, the maple is very subtle and so much so really don't taste it till the aftertaste on exhales.

Mouth feel- heavier than most single bocks that I have drank but very smooth and coats the tongue. Carbonation is low.

Drinkabilty- I think this is a relatively good beer. I was kinda expecting a little more upfront maple but am rather glad they were conservative with it so it didn't overpower the beer itself. I could definitely sit and drink a couple of these.

Appearance: Dark brown, good head.

Smell: Sweetness, floral notes, toffee.

Taste: Nice sweetness, caramel and a touch of maple.

Mouthfeel: Very thin, watery. I thought it was amazing that there was as much flavor from a thin feeling beer.

Drinkability: Almost dangerous, if it's really 7% ABV and drinks like water.

Picked up a single over in Wiscoland since I'd never seen it before. Tasty, but I can't believe how thin the beer felt. It had a good head but the carbonation didn't come through in the feel. Interesting.

A. Dark brown appearance with a two finger tan head that recedes rather quickly to a covering skim. Laces moderately.

S. Rich notes of chocolate, vanilla, cream and maple. I could smell this all day.

T. Dark roasted malt, dates and figs. Finishes with lingering, bitter coffee-like flavors.

M. Creamy without being heavy. Really nice mouthfeel
with low carbonation.

D. Hinterland has nailed this beer. It is flavorful and easy to drink. I usually look past Bocks - this has changed my opinion of them. Worth seeking out.
