Like another reviewer stated, hard to pass up a brewery's 20th Anniversary release. I am a fan of Hinterland's White Out, and was hoping this one would be on par.
This beer is pitch black, with a medium (plus) body, and I get a lot of flavor from the barrel. I can clearly taste the beautifully roasted dark malts here, as well as some nice hop bitterness. I agree that the carbonation level could be a little lower, but I don't find it biting.
Overall, for a 9.4% Imperial Stout, I think this is great. The lower ABV makes it more drinkable for me, and I still get all of the barrel flavor I'm looking for.
I'll be grabbing another bottle.

Some aged bottles must be hitting the market place. Got this on close out (3.33 a bottle) at Heritage. It drinks nicely.
The bourbon aging adds a sweet oak like dimension on the flavor. A lot of booziness to this too on the aroma and on the taste.
Good base Imperial stout that reminds me a little of a slightly lighter bodied Expedition Stout. Good dark malts, and dark chocolate...light notes of vanilla in addition to the oak.
Body is full. Not as big as some in this style but full and creamy smooth too. Like mentioned you can detect that this is a higher ABV beer but the booziness is a good booziness for the most part with just a slight impression of sharp biting alcohol. A little more aging would smooth this out.
This is really good. Wish I'd have got more at this price.

Poured into my Clown Shoes snifter.
A - Pours a dark amber brown with a small tan head.
S - The aroma is molasses and booze.
T - You definitely get the barrel aging up front. Not as sweet as the aroma would indicate.
M - Low carbonation, medium thick mouth feel.
O - Love this beer! So balanced, the booze is there but not out of place. ABV is not crazy but I can feel it. I have a 2nd bottle that I was going to trade but I'm going to drink it. Hope to find some more.
