This award-winning stout was inspired by our friends at Luna Coffee in De Pere. It took over 5 months of late night experiments to perfect its balance– luckily plenty of coffee was on hand.

Brewmaster Notes: Opaque, black color. The rich, tan head compliments the large mouth feel of this brew!

Availability: Year Round
Special Ingredients: Flaked Oats, Coffee
Food Pairings: Chocolate, Cheesecake, Donuts
Malt: 2 Row, Chocolate, Roasted, Crystal
Hops: Columbus, Apollo

slightly old school take on coffee stout, bitter and roasty in a double sense, dark barley and the coffee itself, quality, but bold and dark for sure, neat that its as low alcohol as it is, we see less and less of that these days, also cool that they do nitro cans of it, a serving method that often flatters the style, especially when bitterness is a potential issue, and it does that here, has a softening effect. the beer is black, with some muted shine and a frothy inch of creamy tan head that stays the whole drink. aroma is bitter drip coffee, light smoke and char, and some earthy oats in the mash too, breakfasty to me, less cozy with the coffee intensity, like some of the nuance was roasted through, but i like the boldness. the flavor is pretty simple really, its coffee driven, very little middle malt in this, on the dry side for sure, but for this much coffee flavor its kind of generic, not really showcasing anything special in the beans as far as i am concerned, but maybe freshness is an issue? i like the nitro for it, the body is light even with the fluffy nitro, and if it were moderately less bitter at the end, itd be mighty drinkable. a nice stout, not a great showcase of the coffee even though its strong, and to me this leaves just a little to be desired, despite it being well executed overall. perhaps more of an indictment of the java than the beer. some hops on the back end only add to the finishing intensity...

Deep, dark brown body (looks black in the glass); thick, frothy, off-white head, thick, sticky sheets of foam inside the glass. Fantastic smell of grain char and weakly brewed coffee. The taste follows along with the aroma, dark roasted malt and coffee; mild cocoa and milk chocolate notes; very mild astringency; light bitterness. Medium mouthfeel; smooth and silky; some coffee bite and dry astringency counterbalanced with a soft residual sugar feel.

A pretty solid dark coffee ale coming across as a light-bodied stout with a decent coffee profile.

Purchased for me as part of a beer-of-the-month club, this came packed with 4 different kinds of beer, but i had to try the stout first. Rather plain bottle packaging, but i do like the picture of the moon, it reminds me of the moon rock i bought my son for christmas. He really loves that moon rock. Maybe i'll really love this stout. Poured straight out black, very small centimeter of head and gentle lacing around the rim of the snifter. There's not a strong smell to this beer, it is a very faint coffee like scent, but i repeat, very faint. Even with a snifter it doesn't seem to accumulate much of an odor. Upon swallowing, I'm hit with a nice roasted bitterness of coffee grounds. Not a whole lot of other flavors so it's not terribly complex. But i don't think the point of this beer is to be too complex. And that's ok. Mouthfeel is extremely bubbly and light, not very heavy at all for a stout. This is a pretty straightforward beer - no experimentation, no frills. They say it's a coffee stout, and yes sir by golly that's what it is. Decent working man's beer, and a good winter warmer.

Solid black appearance
Above average body with a bit of a thick creamy feel. Carbonation is too high and kind of takes away from the overall feel.
Aroma is black coffee, fresh ground coffee beans, coffee grinds, malt, and roasted malts.
Taste is a bit dry, coffee grinds, espresso, roasted malt, and a dry barely sweet mocha candy.
This is a bitter dry black cup of coffee with a beer poured in it. The Carbonation fades a bit which makes it a better experience.

12 ounce bottle in a Sam Adams perfect pint glass.

Pours dark black coffee color, reddish brown border highlights. Light tan head, less than 1f, a few spots of lacing.

Aroma is coffee and plastic. Dark roast coffee grinds.

Flavor doesn’t very much from the aroma except that the roasted malt comes out.

Thin and generously carbonated.

One dimensional coffee bomb. Some cocoa or hops would work.

The nose is a strong roasted coffee with a brown head, and has a dark brown body. The taste is almost drinking a watered down coffee with no sweetness. I'd like to have found some sugar, milk, or chocolate notes but none are present. The mouth feel is clean and doesn't leave any lingering notes. I am disappointed with this one, as I was looking for a good dessert beer on a cold January night.

Definitely a coffee stout. With a very forward coffee mouth feel. Had it in a bottle at the brewery where they were somehow out of it on tap. Good example if you like coffee with your beer.

The beer is extremely dark, essentially black. The coffee smell stands out more than the word "coffee" on the label. It has a very malty and as the marketing suggests, coffee taste. If someone swoons at the idea of mixing coffee and beer, I think they will probably really enjoy Hiterland's Luna Coffee Stout, for me as someone who wants to keep those things separate, I don't see myself drinking too many more of these in my lifetime.

I got a bottle of this beer whilst in La Crosse, WI to move my daughter out of the dorm early....Thanks Covid-19! It poured an opaque dark with tan head that did not leave much lace. The scent had coffee notes. The taste was nicely balanced and easy to drink with coffee base and subtle chocolate hints. The mouthfeel was medium in body with good carbonation. Overall its a good beer.

Poured from a 12 oz bottle. This is a fairly standard coffee stout. There is plenty of bitter coffee and dark roast with maybe a hint of smoke and bitter chocolate. Slightly thin and prickly mouthfeel. Decent.

A little past due

Slick black in the snifter with a creamy head of 1/2 finger. Sheets of lacing.

Aroma of ashen coffee ground, with slight dark baker's cacao.

Flavor brings that earthy, bitter, ashen coffee ground but oddly enough it's not too burnt for me. It IS all coffee though, only maybe minor burnt dark cacao somewhere in there. Very ashy, very earthy. Compounds on itself to bring almost palate scrubbing IPA-like bitterness.

Feel is smooth and creamy, medium plus, moderate to high carbonation, and a roasty dry finish. Mild alcohol perception.

Overall, a rather bitter, but good coffee stout, not something I'd likely buy a 6 pack of though. Hits the spot for right now, and that's all that matters.

L - Dark brown. Thin, creamy, but not persistent tan head.

S - Sweet malt, cream, coffee.

T - Coffee flavors dominate. A little bitter and raw tasting, though. Sweet malts.

F - Medium. Creamy.

O - Not the biggest fan of coffee beers and this doesn't strike me as one of the best of those.
