Notes: White Out pours a dark chestnut brown. The khaki head leaves a small soapy lace ring which remains around the top of the beer. The spectacular aroma of buttery caramel malt and bourbon hit you first, followed by a subtle citrus fruit. Smooth bourbon oak and vanilla blend well with the sweet caramel malts. White Out goes down smooth with a slow, lingering bitterness.

Poured in a snifter. Darker and more opaque than expected. Noticed the bourbon in the scent right away, mixed with a solid IPA base of enough malts. Very smooth bourbon taste with lingering hop presence, very complimentary to the overall smooth mouthfeel with just enough carbonation. A unique good local find!

poured 500ml bottle into snifter.

A - Dark rusty amber color with a 2 finger of sandy head. Decent retention that leaves a thick collar and spotty lacing.

S - A sweet and hoppy concoction. The sweetness is from the rich malts, brown sugar, toffee, and caramel. Some bourbon and oak along with hops come in with some pine and citrus notes.

T - It starts off with flavors of sweet caramel, brown sugar, and toffee. Hints of bourbon and oak. A nice hop bite helps to balance it out. Bitter pine and bright citrus notes of grapefruit, but there is some boozieness.

M - Medium body and carbonation. Sticky feel and a mild bitter aftertaste.

O - Pretty decent beer that is more of an American Strong Ale after barrel aging it. Fans of Stone Oaked Bastard should enjoy it.

The Hinterland White Out was a solid IPA. I didn't get a lot of Bourbon as compared to other bourbon barreled ales I have tried. Nevertheless the beer had nice bitterness with pine and citrus tones. I poured a hazy amber with white head that left a nice lace. The mouthfeel was fuller in body with decent carbonation. Overall it was good.

Dark brown pour from a 12 oz bottle. An average sized khaki colored head leaves some spotty lacing and dissipates to some thin, scattered foamy bubbles. I check the label again. Imperial IPA.

Smells of strong caramel and toffee. Pretty sweet with a hint of bourbon. Very barelywine or wee heavy like. I don't notice any hops.

Taste follows for the most part. Caramel malts, toffee, and slightly sour dark fruits balance out some of the sweetness. Also, definitely a pronounced oak flavor, hops that were hidden in the aroma, and some slight black peppery spiciness on the end. I would describe it as very rye like. Slightly boozy.

Carbonation is on the lower end. Body overall is on the higher end. Sort of syrupy.

I like this beer. It is a bit of a boozy sipper. I really want to rate it a bit higher, but as an "Imperial IPA" I am not sure. It does have some hoppiness, but otherwise it drinks more like an American barelywine or even a hoppy old ale/wee heavy. I would describe it as a cross between a Dogfish Head Burton Baton and a North Coast Old Stock Ale. I recommend trying.

Had at Hinterland Milwaukee, Pours brilliant brown with a 1” tan head that produces splotchy lace. It starts with a light sweetness and they becomes dry and chocolatey with a pleasamnt balancing bitterness. Dark for an Imperial IPA but rich, tasty and well done. Nice assertive bitterness on the finish.

Pours chestnut with a thin, wispy head. Trailing lace sticks.

The smell is of caramel/toffee with some peppery spice. Smells more like a barleywine than a DIPA. Still, it is pleasant.

The taste is more like a hoppier barleywine than a DIPA. Sweet and boozy. Caramel/toffee, some pine and a hint of perfume. Black pepper in the tea-like finish.

The alcohol is sharp - and, the body could be fuller for an "imperial". The carbonation is on the softer side.

Not a bad brew, but, again, more like a barleywine - and not a particularly special one. Outside of style, it's a decent, sweet-leaning and definately boozy, sipper.

Probably not fair to this brew, I doubt the bottle I had was fresh. The hop presence was slight and the beer was malty and boozy. I'll try it again if I can get a fresh glass of it.

500 ml bottle (1 PINT), with no apparent bottled on date present. Acquired this bottle on sale at the local beer store for $3.99. My second beer from Hinterland Brewery, with again not much information about the beer itself on the label. No abv listed on the bottle. "Imperial India Pale Ale aged in bourbon barrels". "Brewed and bottled by Green Bay Brewing Company".

Poured into a Duvel tulip glass.

A - It pours a dark reddish mahogany colored body with some nice fine sediment floating around in the glass. About two fingers of frothy khaki head that leaves behind some scattered spotty lacing. Looks pretty nice.

S - The aroma is lightly piney / earthy / herbal with notes of vanilla, cream, oak wood, & toffee in the background. Very light alcohol presence is noted. A very pleasant aroma.

T - The taste follows the nose - some bitter & resinous piney herbal hop presence, paired well with the mellow vanilla, caramel, & oak wood presence from the bourbon barrel aging.

M - The feel is exceptionally smooth & creamy, minor herbal / pine resin bitterness clinging to the palate. Medium-bodied with good carbonation.

Overall, a very interesting bourbon barrel aged DIPA from these guys; definitely much better than the Hinterland Bourbon Barrel Stout that I tried a year or so ago. Good depth of flavor and decent complexity. Absolutely worth the $3.99 I paid for it. Recommended.

Pours into a small tulip glass a deep burnt orange color with a sticky thinner head.resinous hops,caramel,and sweet alcohol hit the nose,smells pretty sweet.Some good hops upfront on the palate with hefty caramel and boozy sweetness hitting hard thru to the finish.Not bad but even a little sweet for the style and that's saying something.

Pour is dark copper color with a bubbly tan head. Nose is strong bourbon and wood, notes of vanilla, a fair bit of rich malt presence, chocolate and caramel. Hops are faint, mostly add citrus behind the strong bourbon and malt. Taste is same, lots of bourbon but actually not quite as dominant. Rich malts, quite a lot of them, chocolaty and sticky caramel. Hops are even more faint, they add a hint of citrus to balance in back. Mostly fleshy orange. Full bodied, chewy, moderate carbonation for being in the barrel so long. More like a hopped up barley wine, blending styles a bit. Not bad, a bit sugary.

16 oz bottle poured into a Hinterland snifter.

A - Deep clear mahogany in color, this dark double IPA is probably dark to begin with but picks up color from it's time in the barrel. The ivory cap of foam leaves dots of lace on the glass before disintegrating into a halo of loose bubbles.

S - Soft notes of vanilla underscore the warm bourbon nose and trail of charred oak but the barrel is immediately cut by hops. A combination of earthy and light citrus cones make their way forward with a sweet caramel malt backer that comes full circle back to warming bourbon as it warms up.

T - Smooth charred bourbon oak and vanilla blend well with sweet caramel malts but are cut short by strikingly pungent hops that bring freshly cut lawn, pine sap, and notes of tropical fruit on the finish.

M - This Medium-full bodied double IPA has a smooth entry but, like the nose and flavor before it, is cut short by gripping hop bitterness that finishes moderately dry.

O - The notion of a bourbon barrel-aged double IPA is a strange one to begin with. For starters, barrel-aged beer needs to sit and age to absorb the characteristics of the wood but, hoppy beer is always best consumed fresh, which puts the combination of the two in a quandary. Hinterland's White Out manages to make sense of the mix with a forward barrel-aged characteristic that compliments the beer's caramelly malt base but also contrasts the hoppy qualities.

Poured from a bottle into a Great Divide tulip that I got at Haskell’s for like $3 or something.
A: Fairly clear but yeastier at the end of the pour. Red to orange with light carbonation. Thin head with slightly yellow tinge and brief lacing.
S: Bourbon dominates with faint notes of fruit, earth, and tobacco. Not much of a discernible hop bouquet.
T: clean, bitter, almost tart, light bourbon, a little sweet, some fruit. Resinous mouthfeel. Malts have definite barleywine character. Hops are earthy and spicy, not floral.
O: I can’t figure out when this was bottled so I'm not sure if it's a recent release. Feels more like a hopped barleywine than anything else, but wouldn’t that be the same as an aged IIPA?
Impartial judgment: My cat smelled it, lingered momentarily, but was indifferent.

Tasted in a tulip glass from draft a Benny's Chop House on November 26, 2015. Look is clear mahogany amber with an ivory cap that leaves lingering lace. Smell is barrel notes first then citrus hop and caramel malt. Taste is charred bourbon oak, vanilla, sweet caramel malts and pungent hop flavors. Feel is medium in body with a smooth entry and dry bitter finish.

Stopped in the brew pub tonight on a reccomendation from my #1 beer ninja BeerFMAndy. A couple epic pork tacos and an outstanding beer later I'm glad I listened.

Served in an oversized snifter the beer is dark chestnut brown with about a finger of khaki head. A small soapie lace ring remains around the top of the beer.

The aroma is spectacular. Buttery caramel malt and bourbon greet you at first. Wood and sweet tarts mix with cut grass a hint of almonds and citrus hops in the finish. I spent a solid five minutes smelling this one. The people at the bar were starting to talk at this point.

The flavor is a touch less powerful than the nose but still great. Bourbon and loads of caramel malt. Earthy grass and citrus are picked up as well. Wet straw and just a hint of heat linger in the finish.

Medium to full creamy body. Semi dry finish. Light carbonation.

Overall a superb barrel aged DIPA. As drinkable as a barrel aged DIPA can get. Damn glad I got a chance to enjoy this one. Since once it's gone it won't be back for a year. Thanks so much to Andy for giving me the heads up.
