Ancient in its roots but refreshing in its revamping- the classic northern German sour wheat ale pokes through all the craziness of the ever-evolving craft beer market with a crazy and rustic flavor of days gone by. Maybe experimentation has always been there?

With its canary-yellow color and its classic wheaty haze, the beer simply glows with an elegant pale golden appearance. As its dainty but tightly woven head develops, it eventually dissolves back into the beer because of its own acidity that outplays its wheat structure.

The bright scent of lemon drops is lightly candied but progressively tart with a complementary waft of lime, green apple, under-ripened berries and white grape. An earthier tone rises for a mild whiff of sea air and musty wheat, that when its mild hop scent emerges reminds me of damp straw. Heading into taste, a bready sense of wheat greets the nose as well as the early palate.

That's when the short-lived sweetness of candied citrus and light bread offer a certain roundness to support the sourness to come. As the sweetness trails, its beautiful acidity comes to life with the same tart berry, apple, grape and lemon-lime characteristics that were picked up by the nose. Its mouth-watering sourness is clean, crisp and ultimately palate cleansing- giving the ale an acute refreshment rather than beating the taste buds with complexity and phenolic spice. Its light bitterness is of fragrant grasses and is the perfect partner to the echoes of wheat that close its taste.

Malty-dry and sharply acidic, the early carbonation makes the beer both highly effervescent with a sprite prickle to the tongue and also creamy with its embedded dextrin-rich wheat structure. With those bubbles, the acidity bursts on the palate that ushers in a fast-fleeting finish that causes the bulk of its taste to resonate more so in finish and aftertaste than during the middle. This further reinforces the element of refreshment and drinkability that makes Berlinerweiss so damn charming (if done properly). ...and at sub-4% abv, its finishes is minty-cool rather than warm but with a trail of vanilla.

Hinterland hit this classic style squarely on the head. The only thing that would win me even more over is to dry the malt even more, as this would also elevate its acidity and clean up its earthen must qualities. Regardless, put this regal ale aside of my parmesan cheese and herb salami anytime.

Pours a pale lemony pastel gold, slightly hazed, soapy cap of foam on top. Pretty effervescent, with sticky lace all around the sides.

Aroma is slightly lemony and wheaty, pretty textbook Berliner, though fairly faint.

Taste is nicely tart, very light bodied with a certain crisp minerality from the lactobacillus. Underripe fruit tartness at first with a smooth wheaty dryness in the aftertaste. Easy drinking, not bad at all. Wondering if the added shelf time contributed to the tart and dry character.

(A)- Pours a pale yellow color. Produced a very nice head of frothy white. Surprising retention and even some thick clumpy lacing left behind. A great looking beer for the style.

(S)- Bone dry with subtle tart lemon rind. Otherwise fairly clean but with a kiss of lemongrass and straw.

(T)- Again, very bone dry with some subtle lemon rind/lemongrass combo. Not very tart by any means but some minimal grainy bread yeast bits.

(M)- A nice spritzy carbonation level. In general, it is a bit flat flavor-wise. The acidity actually becomes quite nice as it opens up over time.

(O)- A solid first attempt at the style for Hinterland. This might improve with time, but hard to say. With a little tweaking, this could be a good one.

Scored one of these from Discount Liquor in Milwaukee when I was back in town for my 10 year reunion at Marquette.

Pours looking like BMC, offered too much clarity for a beer in this genre, I wanted to see free wheat particles all over the place. Aroma kicked some lemon, but like no wheat, came off more like a lager aroma than an ale.

Taste, eh, carbonation high kept it being as noticeable as it could, just didn't drop enough tartness or wheat for me, and that's what makes this beer a berlinner weisse, so I dunno man. Too much noble hop like bitterness, not enough wheat, not enough tart. Carbonation obscured what wasn't there I think.

Pours a hazy yellow gold with plenty of white head. Citrus, lemon citrus, tart citrus, and some raw wheat on the nose; follows onto the palate. Finishes tart and dry. Very nice berliner weisse.

3.2% ABV

A - Hazy pale yellow, this cloudy beer pours with a plume of dense stark white foam that grips the glass leaving thick clumps of lace.

S - Hinterland's Berliner Weisse has a nice tart and acidic nose of a Berliner with a more vibrant hop profile of citrus zest and underlying herbal notes.

T - Delicious grainy pale malt undertones give the base of this Berliner a classic crisp and simple flavor profile that develops quickly, changing to tart white grape skin and lemon zest citrus from ramped-up hop additions.

M - Effervescent carbonation dances on the tongue, joyfully adding to the beer's bright and ethereal crispness while dry tartness finishes out with a faint trail of bitterness for ultimate drinkability!

O - Hinterland has put a slightly hoppy spin on the classic and Berliner Weiss style that's rapidly growing in popularity but at the end of the day, their slight variation of citrusy hops does little to affect the true core of the style; tart and crisp with exceptional drinkability.

This resembles lemonade in its appearance as it has a bright yet watery body. The head builds in a flood of bubbles but it knits tightly.

The aroma is appropriately lemony, dry with a hoppy balance. The hops are more piney but not resiny.

The taste is a tinge acidic lemon juice with less sweetness than lemonade. The hop character also comes through but the bitterness it cut out and it seems to work. This is then supported by a bready malt that ends the taste.

The feel is in line with the acidic lemon but it's not hopelessly bitter. This is actually immensely drinkable and easily sessionable.

This has gotten several poor reviews but I found it to be enjoyable,different and strangely like a Radler.

Hinterland's Berliner Weiss is pale straw golden with surprising clarity and huge carbonation bubbles popping to the surface. The pure white, soapy head grows, on an easy pour, to 3+ fingers in height before resting briefly and falling back to a finger height cap. A couple chunks of lacing are left here and there.

The nose isn't half bad. Spritzy lemon hits upfront with some minerality following closely behind. The malt base is light on the wheaty twang while there's a soft but notable accidity and soured grains. The tart graininess borders on gym socks but a swirl brings the lemon rushing back to the forefront. The lemon acidity is crisp but only when the head is roused.

The flavor profile fits a Berliner rather well. Light, approachable lemon tartness mingles with wheaty twang and an enjoyable minerality, much like wet stones. The tartness is soft but invades every nook and cranny leaving lemon acidity in its wake.

The body is light and effervescent. The airiness hits immediately and quickly moves over the tongue leaving behind awaken tastebuds and an encompassing tartness. The finish is pleasantly dry and the drinkability is high.

This is a good attempt at a Berliner from Hinterland. It has all the characteristics, though not as well defined as the best, that I look for in a Berliner; light acidity, minerality, citric lemon, wheat twang, effervescence, and quenchability. I'd pick this guy up again. At $3.99 not a bad deal at all.

A: Pours a cloudy darkish yellow with a spongy white head and great lacing.

S: The aroma is completely surprising: sweet papaya-like hop notes dominate. A bit of lactic character and wheat comes through as well.

T: Taste brings grassy, slightly citrusy hoppiness, mild lactic tartness, a bit of hop bitterness, and a pleasant wash of grain in the finish.

M: Light-bodied with moderate carbonation.

O: This berliner is hopped way too much to stay true to style. I can't imagine Hinterland would do this unintentionally, but I just don't know. I like the beer, but I have to dock points given that this is simply advertised as a berliner and not a "hoppy berliner" or something like that.

Pours cloudy straw yellow in color with a big 2 finger white foamy that has decent retention. Some nice white lacing is left around the whole glass

There is a fair amount of lemon zest in the nose along with a slight tart slightly skunky funk. Malt is has notes of grain and straw.

Taste is pretty good. Lightly sweet grainy malt is forward in the taste along with a decent amount of wheat. Lemon zest and some slight acidity are on the back end.

There is a medium body that has some mild acidity and sourness. Finish is great, slightly tart and crisp.

A. Light straw color with some turbidity. Nice puffy white head that laces quite well.
S. Bready nose with just a hint of lemon - very little else going on.
T. Lemon juice and malt built on a very light frame. Refreshing but devoid of flavor.
M. Light bodied with minimal carbonation.
O. When the appearance of a beer is its highlight you know something is not right. In a blind tasting I would never guess Berliner Weisse. Would be okay after mowing the lawn to rehydrate but that's about it.

Hinterland deeply disappointed me with a maple beer of theirs about a year ago, but given the difficulty in finding one of my favorite styles, Berliner Weiss, I thought that I'd give this a shot.

Appears a pale straw color, like others that I've had.

Smells of lemons, impending acidity, dirty socks.

Tastes a little funky, don't get any malt or hops, which is par for the style. A little wheat, but that's it.

Light to medium in the mouth, medium carbonation.

Overall I'm underwhelmed. Bayerischer Banof is, so far, the best I've tried in this style. I used to think that Bells' Oarsman Ale was pedestrian, but it easily exceeds this example in taste. If I brew my own, and it turns out like this, I'll be extremely disappointed.
