Lovely bottle, since it has a pirate ship on the label and a touch of kraken as well (is there anything left too desire?). Black with a decent caramel coloured head of foam. I love the smell: the citric and piney cascadian freshness blends very well with the caramel, earty rye and biscuit from the malts. The taste is a lot less intense, but still well balanced. It could have been more stouty in my opinion though, as it leans a bit too much to a herbal-flavoured IPA in the mouth. Mouth feel is a bit disappointing: too light-bodied in my opinion. Still definitely worth a try.

Caught between an IPA and a stout like a rock and a hard place, one sip of Black Flag sends red flags through the tastebuds as two beers seem to live in the same glass. But borrowing the acrid roast from stout and layering it onto a Cascadian IPA, the Oproer brewers seem to have garnered the best of both world.
Dark brown, nearly black, the ale registers much like porter to the eye; capped with a creamy off-white froth and engulfing the nose with roasted citrus, seared pine cone and a coffee-like char. Its taste is of burnt malt sweetness with heavy toast, coffee and cocoa aligning the front of the tongue.
As the flavors develop, the carbonized sweetness retreats and the roast slowly grows. Cocoa powder, bold roast coffee, roasting walnut, chicory and a hint of campfire glide into a citrusy taste of pink grapefruit, freshly zested orange and the piney taste of juniper. Trending bitter with resinous pine flavor, a grassy and citrus rind taste rounds the bitterness with the finish looming.
Medium-bodied but trending dry, its the moderate alcohol spice, the drying hop resins and the acrid nature of charred grain that fuel a dry and drinkable backbone to the ale. A long linger of coffee and citrus pith keeps the session complex yet satisfying and refreshing. Peppery with the grit of rye, the impressions of bitterness come from several different grain and hop aspects, each driving the other higher than each can achieve on their own- proving that this is much more than just a hoppy stout.
