500ml can, from the 2017 Brewer's Advent Calendar, shared by a friend on his birthday.

This beer pours a clear, medium bronzed amber colour, with one zaftig finger of puffy, loosely foamy, and bubbly ecru head, which leaves a bit of mitochondrial lace around the glass as it quickly blows off.

It smells of bready and doughy caramel malt, some muddled dark orchard fruitiness, a hint of indistinct spice, and plain earthy, leafy, and herbal noble hops. The taste is bready and grainy caramel malt, a lesser biscuity toffee sweetness, bruised apples and pears, and more understated earthy, leafy, musty green hop bitters.

The carbonation is quite understated in its wan-seeming frothiness, the body a solid middleweight, and generally smooth, with a wee airy creaminess arising as things warm up a tad around here. It finishes sweet, and definitely fruity.

Overall - this is merely a run of the mill version of the style, mostly sweet and saccharine. Ultimately forgettable for me, but it looks like other people like it a lot, so what the hell do I know?

Pours a dark burgundy-brown, that still shines a ruby red when held directly up to the light. Head formation is two fingers and off-white in color. Good head retention with great lacing left behind. Aroma is bread, biscuit, and crystal malt. Nice density to the bread. Flavor profile is crystal, biscuit, and bread malts, working the palate from light to dark. Mouth feel is smooth and borderline creamy with a medium thickness. Overall, good use of malts in the flavor profile with the aroma lingering just a touch behind. It's a well constructed beer otherwise.

Served in a 12oz snifter from a 16oz can.

A friend gave me this tallboy can from a 25 beers of Christmas set that he got at CostCo. The fact that Kartauser includes their dopplebock in a 25 beers of Christmas box set makes me appreciate it that much more.

Pours a dark amber color with a small one-finger head an no lace. The nose is earthy but muted. Faint banana, with a dull bread scent. Maybe a hint of apple or pear, it's hard to tell. The taste is better, though, with a sweet malty flavor, banana, plum, maple and faint clove. The mouthfeel is smooth, but not as textured as I'd expected it to be.

Overall, it's an underwhelming beer in my opinion. Not bad, but nothing exciting here. Perhaps my expectations were too high, although I'm not sure why thy would have been. A nice enough beer, but I don't see myself revisiting this one in the future. Cheers.

Prom the Advent box. Poured into a snifter. Crystal-clear ruby-copper color with a thick and dense tan head. Nice retention. Bready aroma with mainly biscuit and some caramel. No detectable hop aroma. Huge bready flavor, mainly following the aroma but with a fairly intense malty and almost spicy character. Smooth feel and medium bodied. By far my favorite thus far.

From the Costco Beery Advent Calendar. From the can, it pours a ruby-brown color with a nice head. Definite Caramel Malt in the nose. The mouth gets the rich malty flavor of yummy goodness. Yum!

One of the better cans in the Advent Calendar. Still goes in the 2017 Calendar.

500 ml can poured into a standard pint glass. Day 6 of the advent. Pours a clear dark brown with orange highlights, with a thin sliver of lace. It sizzled as I poured it. The aroma is nuts, vanilla, doughy yeast, and something I can quite place. The taste is right in line with the nose, with some caramelized malts and sugars. The mouthfeel is medium light, at times creamy but not heavy, and level of carbonation is medium low. I never quite determined the line between doppelbock and dunkel (the former being one of my favorite winter styles) but this seems to sit right where that line should be.

From Costco. In Bavaria hefe glass. Playing Sentience Tha Android's Tale. Very easy drink for such abv, with usual doppelbock notes well adjusted but also the soapyness found in other beers of costco's beer calendar

I was very excited to open Day 18 of the Brewer's Advent Calendar and see a doppelbock. Finally, a hearty, full-bodied beer in this collection! Kartäuser does not disappoint; it is either the darkest or the second darkest beer thus far, and the highest in ABV by a fair amount.

KartäuserDoppelbock poured a dark ruby brown, between 20 and 24 on the SRM scale. It is clear when a light is held to it, and there is a steady column of bubbles leading from the bottom of the glass to the top of the beer. There was a decent head on the pour, but it has not lasted long.

There are big, clear aromas emanating from this doppelbock, a welcome change from some of the light-scented lagers in this pack. Hop notes are not present; all the smells I get are malty. There are notable caramel smells, and some hints of toasted bread. The caramel comes through on the flavor pretty strongly. The beer has a general sweetness that I think is hiding some chocolate flavor as well. In the aftertaste, it is almost like a barleywine.

I am overall very pleased with Kartäuser. It is rich and full-bodied and sweet without being cloying. It has a flavors consistent with its smells, and it is a pretty beer to look at. I will definitely keep an eye out for it on taps.
