This is not as bad as it seems! Of course, this is just an easy, simple, tasteless lager with lots of carbonation and some annoying sweetness that lingers on in the aftertaste. Apart from that, it is better than your average (crap) Euro Lager, maybe similar to an American Adjunct with its clearness/clarity. Could be much worse.

Wieselburger Bier Gold
,5l can
€,89 @ SPAR, Babenbergerstrasse 9, Wien
The same as it's big brother, the Wieselburger Stammbräu, but also far less. If the Stammbräu is the "regular" beer, then what is this? It's less than 5% abv for sure. But in that we also lose flavor. Everything that the Stammbräu offers (sweetish and grainy malt, floral and spicy hops, and median bitterness) is offered here in a watered-down version. The graininess of the the malt is lost, the spiciness of the hops is lost, and the bitterness is lost (not that the balance of the Stammbräu is that great either). Pedestrian. Lackluster. Boring.

It could be worse, sure, but I think I'd rather drink my piss after a really good beer than drink this again. I'm sure better flavor would be attained that way. I'm not sure what the market is for this beer in Austria except maybe its price or people who barely have taste buds.

.5L emptied into a Pokal.
A: Pours a traw gold with a 2-finger head which quickly receedes.
S: Mediocre whiff of hops.
M: Medium bodied with good carbonation.
T: Saaz and extracts build the character of this beer. It's hoppy, but not overwhelmingly so. Very little malt to speak of here. Aftertaste is slightly tannic.
D: Not a very memorable beer, but as this was my first taste of Austrian beer after moving here, I use it as a standby. The best that can be said of this beer is that it is one of the better low-end choices available around Vienna.

Yellow gold with light head. Like a Witbier in character, sweet notes with a lemony touch. Soft, malty body with a short, dry bitterness. A somewhat normal beer, and quenches the thirst. Overall too thin and tastefree to be highly rated, but not a disaster.

Well, in spite of the proximity to south germany, lagers in austria have been widely disappointing. Wieselburger's 'Gold' is a case in point. Mass produced pale yellow with a slight head and some carbonation. The smell and taste are both equally mediocre, based on an awfully pale lager malt-and-water taste, topped off by a slight bitterness at the end added by the hops. Still, it's no gold.
