Grape soda looking black, blurplish. Dark brown head. Smells like raspberry studded fudge brownies...all chocolate malt, and just hints of tropical fruit, which becomes funky when combined. Bright feel overcomes med-full body and the savory creaminess of the oaty-choco malt. Oatmeal stout x ipa vibe here in flavor and feel. Raspberry blintzes, sharp lemon cream curd, semi-sweet chocolate dipped orange slices. Citrus tartness leveled out by chocolate like a maraschino cherry cordial. Put another way its like a cherry-lemon sorbet studded with chocolate chips. Funky.

16 oz can poured into Ellipsis glass.

So while I figure out what this thing actually is from both the smell and a quick sip of the remaining liquid on the lip of the can, I notice that not only is this beer chocolate black, but has hints of raspberry/deep red in there which leads me to believe it has been fermented with red fruit. The head is thin but creamy, 1/2 finger, and is grey - yes completely grey - in color.

On the nose I get funk and coffeepot, or perhaps aromas from the coffee shop next door with thin walls. Very slight raspberry/tartness.

So, talk about a mind-fuck. This thing is totally snot-nosed punk in every way, shape, and form. It literally bows down to NO style. You can't nail it. It's an enigma. "Do not label me" says the beer as it stands in the corner with a cigarette hanging from its lips. The flavor brings some tart and sweet dark berry (leaning towards black raspberry); some chocolate and roast malts with whispers of coffee; tart berry and cherry and slight citrus and pineapple; and a lemon-lime sherbet with pineapple wedges on the finish. The best part of this beer? It fucking comes together. It just does. How? I don't know. It's just oddly in line with itself. This beer is like.a band that refuses to follow a metronome in the studio but is so wonderfully in time with itself that you just take it out of the equation. Who am I to mess with a groove?

Feel is incredibly acidic and biting, very tart, very twangy. Light dryness on the finish. Very faint alcohol heat.

Overall, this beer defies all style guidelines and does it with such smooth disregard that it's beautiful. Try this thing, whatever it is.

This looks like prune juice with a short airy tan head that dies to nothing.

Smell is oddly tart of pome fruits and date while simultaneously sweet and sticky of oddly toasted brown sugar and maple. It's wholly strange.

Taste is tart, lightly baked crabapple with an odd bit of ruggy hops I've yet to experience with one of these sour IPAs up until now. While I get some charred roast and red grape character, the chocolate and raspberry seem to have disappeared into these odd notes, never really returning for me.

This twangy tartness has a bubbly, large but light carbonation before finishing semi-dry and lightly sticky.

My first disappointment from Hudson Valley. Oh well, on to the next one!

Nothing like expected. More like a dark fruited sour/sour brown that a black IPA. This one is very good. Deep brown to Black pour with a caramel brown head. Hues of deep red throughout the beer. Chocolate notes with raspberries and plums. Medium to light body with a tart fresh finish.

Crowler from 10/25. Poured into Belgian tulip.
Look is pitch black with a brown fluffy head that recedes fairly quickly. Nose is kind of red winey type raspberry notes with some nice dark chocolate in the background that grows more as it warms, makes it feel more and more like dark chocolate covered berries. Taste follows similarly with the winey berry notes up front then the dark chocolate coming up in the middle and staying through the end with some some vinegary sour notes coming through with a generally lightly tart finish, lingering dark chocolate and coffee type notes along with the berry. Mouthfeel is medium. Overall didn’t have high hopes for chocolate in a fruity sour but shouldn’t have doubted HV, they play together really nicely here. Great stuff.
