Normal prices for the first district in Vienna. They try really hard to brew inventive and experimental beers, but I've never been 100% impressed by what they serve. It feels like a good effort, but the beers are still quite out of balance. The food is good enough American fare and the staff are usually very friendly.

Around the corner from this bar is Stadtbrauerei Schwarzenberg. It's well worth a bar hop to this place if you're drinking at 1516.

EDIT: I have to go back and change the 'service' score to a two now because of a bad experience we had last night. We had been drinking and snacking at a table for a while, when our waitress asked us to stand up and move to the bar because someone else wanted to eat at the table. They didn't have a reservation or anything, they just wanted our table. There was really no comfortable place at the bar, so basically we just had to go home. The whole thing felt really crappy.

I'm starting to think that I really just don't like this place.

Wife and I visited for lunch on a weekday. We sat outside. She had a "chicken caesar salad" (they forgot the chicken, there was more bacon than lettuce, there was also more parmesan than lettuce, and never in my life have I seen such large chunks of parmesan served to a person). I had a cabbage roll, which was pretty good.

We had a couple beers each. They were all right, nothing particularly notable either way.

Inside, the brewery is actually pretty nice, kind of an old pub kind of feel. Outside, it has a little bit of a biergarten sort of feel.

Servers were nice, though not super attentive. I did not get the impression that they had much knowledge about beer, though to be fair I was speaking in English (I did not have the impression that it was difficult for them, but maybe it was).

They had a better selection of beers than most places in the area -- several IPAs, maybe a total of 10-12 different beers on tap.

Not a destination, not even a high recommendation, but if it's convenient, it's worthwhile.

I visited 1516 a couple days ago while exploring Vienna with my wife. On my visit, they had 8 beers on tap plus a shandy and Victory IPA as a guest tap - they will even pour you a black & tan. There were a few classic styles, like helles and weissbier, but also an amber, a pale, a gose, and a bourbon vanilla raspberry saison; the weissbier and helles lager were both quite good.

We sat out on the lovely patio and had lunch. The taproom inside is a very homey old-country pub, with the brewhouse out for all to see - great! The wiener schnitzel and the stuffed cabbage sarma were both good. Service was prompt and the staff spoke English well. Perhaps not the hottest beer destination in town, but a nice spot to stop on the tourist trail.

Visited on summer weekday, honestly was not very impressed. We sat inside as rain was threatening. Beer selection was as expected, and execution to style was decent but not memorable. Everything was pretty much the same: good, not great, except the food was below par. I’d revisit, but only because our experience seems to far out of line with others’, we may have caught on a bad day

This place looks awesome and shows reasonable beers but at a price - the service is awful and the selection available is like what you can see in Central European contries who take beer on a conservative way - it's terribly poor. 4 to 7 beers, always the same recipes, repeated all over again. If only the rotating references were good enough to stop innovating, but not. There's tons of room for improvement.

Really cool place, looks like an old pub in old Vienna, first floor was packed, crazy due to the world cup game, and tons of smokers. But the second floor is the quiet little mecca, cool posters, old brick and wood building, paintings etc.
They have 10 beers, all their own, and the three I had were really good, and the waitress brought a free sample of their shandy for my wife, and it's one of the only beers she's ever actually liked. However she wanted a sweet wine drink, so our waitress made a special drink and she loved it.
Speaking of, one if the nicest and friendliest people we've ever met, our waitress, Natalie. Great recommendations, great personality, very friendly. The food was also very good, we got the wings which came with a side of potato wedges, and a garlic cream sauce that was awesome.

Make sure you go up to the bar on the second floor!!!

1516 Brewing Company is a smallish brewpub that's kind of a blend of an American and English pub that's really unlike anything else around. They seem to have a strong local following, and that's understandable as it's quite comfortable, and fairly charming.

The beers are all unfiltered, and of good quality, and there are 6 or so to choose from. Nothing I've had has knocked me out, but neither have they disappointed, and the food follows that rule. American items like burgers, hot wings, and BBQ pork seem to be a big thing here, but they do other dishes as well: Schnitzel, Spaetzle, Wursts, Goulash, etc. Price-wise I feel that both the beer and food are reasonable.

I will say that it was one of the most friendly places I visited in Wien, and therefore it gets big points for that. I normally prefer to find places that are unlike what I already know, but it was a pleasant change from the stiff service and distant, or non-existsnt, comradery I found amongst other pub goers at most places. Worth a stop.

This is an interesting find right in the heart of the tourist area, about a 5 min walk from the art museums. Very much in the style of an American brewpub and they pretty accurately achieved that vibe. The food menu is fairly extensive and the couple of appetizers we tried were excellent. The beer selection is extraordinarily large and diverse for this part of Europe, with 8-10 house brews featuring traditional German and Austrian styles as well as several American style hoppy ales and stouts. The hoppy brews were a good effort, but would never pass in the U.S., the European styles and more malty brews were all quite nice though. By far the most impressive was a barrel aged Mexican chocolate imperial stout that was well executed (if a bit dryer than most such big, adjunct stouts in the U.S. tend to be) and would be at home in any modern craft breweries repertoire. It is clearly an uphill fight to sell no traditional beer in this part of the world, but these guys clearly represent a growing desire for innovation amount the younger beer drinking public and are really very much worth checking out if you find yourself in the heart of old Vienna.

Went there yesterday after finding it in the search results for Wien. Turns out this place was down the street from our hotel, so going here was a no-brainer. Really buzzing place in the old city, a lot of young people enjoying brews, the inside was loud so we sat outside. Our service was very prompt (which is odd for Europe), and our waitress was Canadian so there were no language issues. Had three beers here which were all quite tasty and above average for Austrian beer. Had weißwurst and pretzel with mustard for dinner, which was spectacular. Would recommend.

We hit 1516 Brewing Company twice while visiting Vienna and had a great time both nights. It's a pretty popular place... right downtown, and they brew several very good beers. My favorite was their take on Victory's 'Hop Devil', and I was stunned to see it on the menu (being from Downingtown and all). I guess the guy that brews for Victory came over to Austria... hit it off with these guys, and shared recipes. So... 'Victory's hop devil brewed with water from the Alps'? Yes please. The food was good, with a mixture of Austrian stuff (schnitzels, spaetzles) and more american style stuff. We stuck with the Austrian food and had 2 very solid meals. Service was fast/friendly, and the beer was well above average. Would definitely come here again/recommend.

The beer is ok, but the food (I had the daily special) wasn't that satisfying. It was food that had been heated several times. I pity as the place is close to the center and the place is nice. the waiter was very helpful though giving us directions to the museum we wanted to go afterwards.

This place is great value for money. Simple honest Austrian food - like pork ham, sausage and sauerkraut, baby back ribs, steaks and soups - and even American inspired dishes like wings and hamburgers. It's not gourmet but will do the job just right, without ever reminding you of fast food fare.

And the beers - especially the Hop Devil, made with American hops and recipe - are great! The beer is brewed on-site, and you can see copper stills and piping all behind the bar, and bags of grain and other ingrediends about.
Overall the place looks like a cool rock'n'roll wood/brown cafe, quite large (two floors) but dimly lit so it's intimate as well (it even has a few separé's). It's definitely not a german beer-hall. The location is great, very central and close to the Stephanplatz shopping areas, but quiet.

Highly recommended if you're in Vienna.

Never have I shifted between elAtion and disapointment as quickly as I did between reading 1516s menu and ordering my first beer. The brewpub markets history and tradition, with a modern flair and offered stylistically interesting Nelson Sauvin and Saphir siingle hopped beers. Of course, they were out. Th availablee weizen and the hoppy blond lager were delights. I wound down from a crazy work week whil sitting in their al fresco seats and watched the world go by. The pub interior was nice and wooden. I dug it but needed some air.

1516 is a short walk from the Stephensplatz and Oper U-bahn stops. It's a great place to grab some quality beers and have lunch/dinner. Most of the times I was there was when soccer or other sports were on. This is an awesome place to watch sports because there are TVs everywhere and its packed with people. The bartenders are very nice and helpful. The ones I talked to definitely knew a lot about the beers. Their beers are tasty, but it was really cool to hear the story about Hop Devil and have it on tap in Vienna! Don't worry, its just as delicious there.

This was by far my favorite place to drink in Vienna. Pretty nice place, large but cozy, nice looking bar and a decent amount of outside seating. the beers were solid. Traditional lagers but also different styles from around the world. I think they 5-6 different beers on tap besides their year round lagers. Had a Victory Hop Devil made with New Zealand hops which I thought was pretty cool. The food was pretty good, nothing really special but certainly decent. Service was a bit slow but that was fine. In a great location as well, easy to stop off to or from some non beer culture. So it's not as good as places in other cities but it is the best place I went to in Vienna

This place is not great. The beer they brew is not bad (for Austrian standards, I would not drink this in the US, Belgium, Denmark, etc) and there is good selection of it, but the bar is smokey to the point of annoyance, the food is a little expensive but not very good, and the service isn't great even by Austrian standards.

The best part about this place is the beer, which, again, is decent by Austrian standards. The problem is that they specialize in American style beers (this is a very, very fast growing trend in Europe; I was amazed by how much respect American brewers get in the European beer community), but do not pull them off nearly as well as Americans.

If you want a sub par Austrian version of an American brew pub, Siebensternbräu Haus is a better all around experience. If you just want really good beer, go to Känguruh.

A very respected place, tucked away in the heart of the 1st district, this is well worth the effort of finding it. Our visit was late on a Friday afternoon, but we were immediately taken to a seat near the bar and the service was excellent. There were elements of American and British culture scattered throughout and we were actually greeted in English. The menus are bilingual, with English being the main script and the German translation below, which I find a nice touch.
We started with the House Lager, which was quite reminecent of Augustiner Bräu Hell. Then we moved on to sample several of their other brews, which are available in .1L glasses. Their Eejit's Foreign Extra Stout was quite memorable, as well as the Victory Hop Devil IPA.
As for the problem with smoking, I believe that most of Vienna has imposed a smoking ban. I did not notice anyone smoking, nor did I notice any smoke. However, A/C will probably still be scarce.
Overall, a very nice place and I have no qualms in recommending it.

My ratings are in relation to other brewpubs I've been to in the world, but for Vienna this is THE place to go. It's much better than Siebensbrau (T Stern Brau)- higher quality beer, better food and more social. I would have given a 5 for atmosphere but they still allow smoking in bars in Vienna and this place, like most other places I visited, was disgustingly smoky. Grow up, Austria!

Not sure who owns this place but s/he has been to America. Menu has several American items on it, and when i was there close to Thanksgiving the dinner special was a traditional Thanksgiving dinner except they had goose instead of Turkey. Also, on tap they had Hop Devil IPA that was brewed in the brewpub by Victory's brewmaster who was a recent guest. Very cool. It actually tasted more like an imperial IPA to me.

Also on tap was a quinoa weissbier, a smoked porter, authentic dunkel, a pilzner and a couple other brews.

Nice selection of locally made sausages on the menu also.

A very large and eclectic selection of house beers (for Europe). The beer menu was excellent, not just describing the beer ingredients but also the influences. The Hop Devil collaboration (or influenced) IPA was amazing and better than I remember the original tasting. We tried a number of the others and all were exceptional (and I am hard to impress after living in San Diego and the Seattle area).

I was there during a soccer game and the place was packed and very smoky. The servers were overworked and the setup made it difficult to get to our table. When they did make it over, they were very knowledgeable and helpful.

The food was pretty good (although as a vegetarian my selections were limited).

I am looking forward to my next trip to Vienna and a stop at 1516.

This brewpub is located toward the south end of Vienna off of Krugerstraße near the Stadtpark. Not too terribly far from the subway so it is accessible from the Danube port. There is parking on the street immediately in front of the building as well.

There was a soccer game going on during our visit so the inside was absolutely packed with smoking patrons with no air conditioning. The brewpub is two levels with a bar on each. The lower level bar has a large chalkboard showing what beers are on tap, and there are high tables for seating. The rest of the place has table seating, and there is a patio out front, which is where we ended up.

The beer selection is decent. They have around 6 available and they seem to be more of an American influence than German/Austrian. Amber, Stout, IPA etc. The beers were slightly above average. We didn't try the Hop Devil because we assumed it was a guest tap...what are the odds?

Service was about what we expected for the region, coupled with the place being overflowed with raucus soccer fans. Our beers arrived fairly quickly once we were finally noticed and our check came shortly after we were able to get the server's attention to ask for it.

We did not try any food on this visit.

Overall I enjoyed the experience and beer at 7 Stern more than at 1516, which seemed to have much more of a touristy feel. Still I would try to visit here again when it was less hectic to enjoy their beers in a more relaxed environment.
