Aroma is fruity , color is full golden. Pleasant malty with alcohol notes. Full and rich. Aftertaste with acid notes, long and light bitter (astringent). Pleasant on a cold day. The fresh, fruity taste is complemented by flavours that are reminiscent of gingerbread, spice and dark bread. The finish or final taste is strong and long-lasting. A very nice beer indeed.

I found Gösser's contribution to Herbstbockzeit in a local Vienna supermarket. The bottle looks familiar, except for the ram's head above the name on the front label. Ingredients conform to the purity law. Best before 4/2007, I opened it on 10/29/06.

Pours a clear standard gold under a two finger white head that fades fairly quickly but with some contour, leaving a few spots of lace. The nose is sweet and spicey, quite pleasant, actually. The mouth is very prickly and quite light - nothing special here. Pleasantlly sweet taste of fruit and malt in the opening, followed by... nothing. Very water middle, chased by an ever so slight hoppy bitterness emerging very lightly and only after the beer warms considerably. Even then, the bite is just a nip. Not at all unpleasant, but pretty non-descript.

From 0.5 L bottle into a pokal, pours dark-ruby to pure brown with rich and thick tan-coloured head which slowly fades into long-lasting lace.
Smells of roasted barley, caramel and freshly baked brown bread, tastes os smooth caramel, dark sweet berries and banana. Excellent aftertaste, a tiny bit too carbonated for me, but overall it's a wonderful strong dark beer.

Picked up 5 different bottles of beer in a recent visit to Budapest to review, this is the first. I'm fully aware this isn't a Hungarian beer, but it isn't exactly common. Here goes!

Poured from half-liter bottle into nonic imperial pint glass.

Appearance: Pours a very dark caramel color, with a large tan head. Head dissipates pretty quickly with thick lacing left behind.

Smell: Roasted notes and heavy on caramel malt. A very strong smell that I can smell as the glass sits next to me while I type.

Taste: Very sweet caramel flavor. Finishes with a pretty strong alcohol tastel and a roasted bitterness.

Mouthfeel: Thick and heavy. Very smooth.

Drinkability: This is a damn good beer. It packs a good punch and is a sipper, but it's full-flavored and enjoyable. Recommended.

.5L emptied into a Pokal.

A: Pours amber gold with a fluffy 2-finger white head which receeds to a thin ring. Good lacing throughout.

S: Sweet malt, grain, wet straw, caramel, pepper, floral hops, lemon zest.

M: Medium bodied with a nice carbonation for the style.

T: Sweet barley malt, spicy hops. Bockish booze through the midrange. Gingerbread spice. Very dry finish with an astringent aftertaste which lingers.

D: Decent Bock on most counts, but it just seems like this one needs to mature a bit more to take the rough edges off. The overall profile marks it spot-on as a Gösser product.

I used to live fairly close to the Goesser Brewery and it was actually viewable from the bedroom window of a friend with whom I often stayed with. So, Goesser as a brewery, for several reasons, holds a place in my heart.

Their Goesser is my favorite beer (unless I track down a vintage of their Ice Lager) and I dont expect that to change. Color is a little deeper than its Murauer competitor and it does a better job in forcing me to wash the glass afterwards. Flavor does have notes of ginger, 'Christmas spices', and a pumperknickel bread aftertaste which helps to balance everything out. A good bock. Austria's best in a bottle? Im waiting to try Hirter's...
