Velkopopovický Kozel Dark beer is brewed to the original recipe using a special mix of dark malts, clean water from our own well close to the brewery, and a selection of the best hops. The caramelized malt gives this beer a unique ruby color and sweet flavor, thanks to which it is appreciated and respected all over the world.

On-tap (500ml) from U Pavouka in Prague Old Town (49Czk):
Dark, caramel brown bordering on black with a tan brown head come lacing that stuck to the sides as I worked my way down the beer.

Light malts & roasted notes with caramel & toffee. Relatively light on the nose & features a hint of chocolate and some darker malts too.

Light to medium malts with some caramel & good sweetness. Some bitterness & roasted flavours appear along with some burnt toast with faint chocolate at the end.

Smooth & creamy with a medium body and moderate carbonation that went well with the clean and crisp feel to the beer that was slightly wet in the finish.

The beer mirrored what I've come to expect from Czech beers of late, highly drinkable, enjoyable with little to no off-flavours and very easy to drink.

Pours with a substntial but short-lived head. Settles immediately to a partial film. Cola dark. One note nose of light caramel, maybe a little roastiness. Thin bodied, uncomfortable mothfeel. Oily? Taste is watery, not complex in any way. Only the merest bit of what you'd expect in a stout by way of chocolate or coffee or anything else. Just low end unsophisticated stuff. Not actively objectional, not not really worth a visit either.

473 mL can from Metro; best before May 21 2024 and served slightly chilled. An exciting random grocery store find for this beer geek, as I haven't tried a new Czech beer in literally years.

Looks brownish-bronze at a glance, but holding it to the light reveals its brilliant ruby red hues, as well as its crystal clarity. Just over an inch of creamy, foamy, buff-coloured head lasts for several minutes, soon whittled down to a tight collar and thin cap; not a lot of lace at first, but it does build up as you sip away at the glass. Its aroma is comprised of toasted nuts, bready dark malts, toffee/brown sugar sweetness and a touch of roastiness.

Mildly sweet-leaning flavours, with dark malts, toffee and toasted bread leading the way; hints of chocolate and nuttiness crop up shortly thereafter. Finishes with a flash of dark fruit, followed by more dark malt sweetness and toastiness dissipating into a malty aftertaste. Impressively flavourful for such a light beer. Light in body, with moderately crisp carbonation that adds some bite to this dark lager's smooth, satisfying mouthfeel. Fantastic drinkability, remaining tasty even as it warms.

Final Grade: 3.7, a B grade. Kozel Dark was a pleasant surprise, in more ways than one. I am not familiar with this style, and thus am in no position to argue whether or not it is a good Czech-style brew. As a dark lager in general, I found this a little on the sweet side, but it's still easy to like, and even easier to gulp back - a solid autumn session beer, for sure. I will definitely be buying more of this, and plan to try it side-by-side with Budvar Dark at some point, to determine which one I prefer.

Clear dark red body under a huge tan head with good lacing. Sweet, caramel malt aroma Dark malts dominate the taste with an earthy, roasted edge. A light touch on the hop bill adds a modicum of bitterness for balance. Not a heavy flavor but it does have a fullness to it that easily leads to ordering another one.

Tall can picked up at a store in Skopje. Having just had a half liter on draft of the Budvar dark lager, this is a bit better. Still a bit muted and not as flavorful as I had hoped. Still, tasty rich roasted malt and a solid feel and finish.

Can: poured a clear cola color with a smallish tan cap...aroma of sweet dark malts and light grassiness....light bodied for a Dunkel, surprisingly smooth, silken mouth feel....front side has a nice chew of roasty, carmel malts, thin finish has some light hoppiness...not a bad light beer not to thin for a light but certainly not as satisfying as a full gravity Dunkel
