A good start to this beer, pours a deep black with a thin head that breaks leaving a slight collar. The smell is strong roasts and a lot of licorice. The flavor is where there is a bit of a let down...it is overpoweringly sweet which takes away from the other flavors of licorice and roasts. The feel is syrupy and chewy.

I had high expectations for this one, and I have to say I was disappointed. It was far too sweet and that perhaps ruined what would have been a tasty beer.

Got this one at the brewery back in 2016.

From a 750 into a snifter
Vintage: 2016

APPEARANCE: Pours out thick, syrupy, almost opaque black, yielding a two finger, medium looking, creamy tan head with excellent retention. Cascading head looks great. Pitch black body with no carbonation evident. Head slowly fades to a nice, creamy cap and coats the glass with lacing. A ring remains until the end leaving falling dots of lacing as it empties. Good looking.

SMELL: Lots of molasses, leather, pure chocolate, charred aromas and some touches of tobacco on the nose. Hints of soy sauce as well.

TASTE: Sweet molasses, charred malts, tobacco and leather up front. Flavorful stuff and a bit of booze at the swallow. Bold and lingering finish of roasted and charred malts, dark chocolate, burnt coffee bitterness, sweet molasses and tobacco as well. Earthy hop flavors and some burnt character accompany the decent dose of lingering bitterness. Some alcohol as well. Flavorful with plenty of character.

PALATE: Medium-fuller body with medium levels of carbonation. Enough weight on this one, goes down fine with a bit of a burn and finishes sticky. Some alcohol lingers.

OVERALL: This is big and boozy but it’s got a lot going on. Piles of flavor and aroma with a great look and feel to go with it. It's definitely on the sweeter side but it's big, syrupy and slick, which I can definitely appreciate. This is great as it is but I’d love to see what a high quality bourbon or rum barrel might do to it. Pretty sure I have another one of these back home and will be imbibing again this summer. Cheers guys!

Pours a midnight black with a nice mocha head. Good retention. Roast and licorice on the nose. Lots of flavour but not well balanced. A sweetness overpowers the roasted malts. Viscous like motor oil with a syrupy mouthfeel.

A bit of a let down and quite overly sweet.

Poured a thick black colour with a thin layer of mocha coloured head.

Nose is full of roast with lighter molasses and licorice notes.

Palate delivers what the nose hinted at ~ massive bitter roast with complimentary cocoa, licorice and molasses notes. There's ample sweetness to balance out the heavy bitter roast, but the bitterness is prevalent.

Fully body with light carbonation. Viscous and somewhat creamy. Great mouth feel. Would love to see this get a barrel treatment.
